This tactic works quite well when the last 15 km or so of the stage are hilly, either finshing uphill or downhill. It works in hard mode and lower, don´t know about extreme.
For this to work,you need your leader for the stage to have at least 72-73 stats in hills and decent endurance, and the same goes for your main helper.
1. At the start of the stage, protect both your leader and main helper, and keep your next 2 best riders from doing any extra effort. The remaining 2-3 riders should focus on helping the peloton control the breakaways and get water,
2. In tthe last 30 km or so get your leader, main helper, and next 2 best riders to position near the front of the pack. If you do it later it might cost them more effort as the pack will be flying by then.
3. In the last 15 km or so, get your next 2 best riders to protect your leader and main helper, then use the dot at 85 for leader and main helper. Get the main helper to start the dot a little earlier than the leader, so it is the leader that follows, otherwise you might find your main helper left behind too soon.
4. When the yellow bar of the 2 riders protecting is empty, get your main helper to protect your leader and keep the 85 dot until the last km. By then, the pack will be already lagging behind or about to. The stage favourites will not respond to your dot efforts, since it is not an attack; instead they will hope that the pack will catch up with you - but at this point riders in the pack cannot cope with your rythm, so your leader will get enough advantage to get to the finish alone and avoid the sprinters.

Does not always work.I had tried it once on stage 8 of Tour of China.ASA I got 30 sec gap on final climb couple of the race fav attacked and got up to me and sat on my wheel.Thx anyways!!!
Yeah, it's not 100% failproof. But it has helped me, for example, to win Milano-San Remo a few times when I knew my leader would not stand a chance in a sprint finish.
