Clasica San Sebastian - Preview
We welcome 23 teams from across the Pro Tour and Pro Continental Tour to the Basque Country for a tough and testing 251.3km race which starts and finishes in the beautiful town of San Sebastian.
The race itself sees the riders venture over hill after hill after hill. Many of which are actually quite lengthy climbs but the main feature is just how steep they are. Ironically, the final run to the finish line is one of the few flat sections but don't expect to see a particularly big group contesting the win.
The puncheurs are the riders to watch here and plenty of them have made the trip to Spain for this one.
De Bie has been in fairly good form this season and will be hoping that continues. He's one of the top favourites and should fancy himself if he is part of a small group approaching the finish.
Lopez is equal top favourite but may fare better on the longer climbs. It'd be a surprise if he isn't there at the end when it matters.
The trio of Ponzi, Vakoc and Borges are all similar riders in that they are very capable over the hills but they have the dual skillset of being able to put in a good sprint should that be the way this race is decided. Expect less attacks from these 3 but it would be ill advised not to keep your eye on them.
A few riders less inclined in the sprinting department but very strong puncheurs in their own right include Mohoric who is due a win. He has the ever capable support of Gidich as well.
Kelderman will be hoping he can put in a good ride too and should be fighting for a podium spot at the very least.
Kwiatkowski and Beltran are two other riders who could really succeed here if the longer climbs have an impact. They have both been strong this season but it's a different challenge here given the PT competition.
Finally, the hopes of the home nation will be lying predominantly on the shoulders of Izagirre. Realistically, a Top 5 would be a great result for the Spaniard but he'll be hoping for a surprise result on home territory. He will share the Basque support with Bilbao who is, at best, an outside favourite to make the Top 10, but he'd be wanting to make a good account of himself in front of friends and family.

A PTHC hilly classic, the worst possible type of race for us Luckily, it's the only of that kind on our schedule. I would hope for one or two guys in the breakaway, and them to stay in front long enough to hang on for a Top 50 result. Because I fear that all our riders in the peloton will just chill at the back and fall victim to the first split. Nothing to lose here though, so I'll read that report very relaxed

Serrano horrible so far this season, so don't expect anything here. A guy in the break would be nice. Thanks for the preview, LLS.

The tougher climbs could help Beltran, but on the other hand this is a 250 km race and his stamina is not that good. I'm hoping for a good result from either him or Gaudu. Preferably both
Thanks for the preview

Time for Lopez to take over control over the season. Aim has to be a podium finish.

Hoping for Moscon to make use of his decent mountain skill and good energy stats. However, we should probably have sent along Masnada to support him, as Pernsteiner hasn't done a great job yet this year.
Pretty much only PTHC/HC races left for us this year, hence great scoring potential but huge competition. Hope we'll be lucky from time to time.
Thanks for the preview!

On paper this should be a good race for my team with both Mohoric and Gidich here. Thanks for the preview! |

Thank you for the preview, LLS!
Should be one of the better one day races in the PTHC bands for Kwiatkowski. At least that's what I hope.
As a PTHC race, we had to send Amezawa to hopefully score some depth points too, but that's obviously not our main priority here. Fingers crossed Kwiatkowski gets a good day and can compete for a top 5. |

I really need a top performance here. Less than a podium would be hard really even though the start list is very tough. |

Interested to see how Areruya can do here. He's got the worst hill of the higher MO guys so not expecting a huge payoff if it tends that way but maybe he can overperform still.

Turgis did really well here last season, so figured it was only fair to give him the chance to lead. Then I sent Meintjes as well as I wasn't sure if that would be a good idea |

Oof. We're here huh? That's a shame.
Absolutely no expectations whatsoever. Hopefully we get in the break of the day.

Probably too much climbing and too many kilometers for Borges, but you never know with him. My bet would be Lopez. Let's see.
Good luck everyone and thanks for the preview LLS!

Trakhov was really good during the Ardennes classics, hopefully he can continue to surprise again here in Donostia.

Don't understand man!
I must be crazy to expect different outcomes from the same useless rider.
We're going going down now for sure. Late season scoring depends heavily on Kelderman and he's absolute crap.

Ouch. Aranburu is just so bad. This time getting beaten by Warbasse in a hilly classic. Didn't expect much, but didn't expect that. The 0 pointer for us though, not unexpected.
Nice that Sulvaran got in the break, although looking at the strength of it, you have to wonder why we didn't send someone like Warbasse in instead. Gyasi doesn't have the strength to survive a race like this. Not that it would have mattered.
Congrats to UBS, and thank you for another great report LLS!
