Franceville Classique Preview
It's time for the Franceville Classique, a new cobbled race in Gabon. With no past editions, and no previous winners, it is a clean slate for everyone to try to put a stamp on. The race takes place in and around the city of Franceville, taking the riders over nineteen cobbled sectors, mostly flat and with a few inclines added in. The cobbles specialists will surely want to stake their claim on history and become the first winner of this race. The sprinters who can hang with the best on the cobbles might be a good bet for this stage as well.
Let us look at how the field has shaped up, given the startlist registered for this race.
| FLA | STA | RES | COB | SPR | ACC | Wisniowski | 80 | 75 | 76 | 83 | 73 | 76 | Summerhill | 78 | 76 | 72 | 83 | 70 | 73 | Pedersen | 77 | 78 | 80 | 79 | 78 | 77 | Senechal | 75 | 79 | 74 | 82 | 69 | 74 | Trentin | 74 | 76 | 71 | 81 | 75 | 76 | Gerts | 77 | 76 | 80 | 80 | 72 | 70 | Kamyshev | 77 | 81 | 75 | 82 | 66 | 60 | Vanbilsen | 78 | 80 | 74 | 80 | 72 | 71 | Spengler | 74 | 72 | 73 | 83 | 61 | 70 | Vanspeybrouck | 75 | 77 | 70 | 81 | 66 | 68 | Kristoff | 74 | 73 | 69 | 77 | 82 | 77 | Ferreira | 73 | 74 | 70 | 79 | 71 | 69 | Fenn | 72 | 75 | 71 | 79 | 70 | 69 | Ringheim | 72 | 75 | 71 | 78 | 73 | 75 | Bohli | 74 | 79 | 75 | 77 | 74 | 68 |
With Man-Game legend Bewley absent from a rare cobbles race with his team not choosing this band, heir apparent Lukasz Wisniowski who tops the favourites list in this race. He has gone from strength to strength over the past couple of seasons, and is in fact the World Champion, a tag he has held with dignity this season so far. Let's see if he can live up to his billing. Grieg come into this race with a double-billing, with the superstar of tomorrow Mads Pedersen trying to provide a knockout blow to the other teams, along with his designated 'team leader.
Summerhill is having perhaps the season of his life, and his team Andorra have been flying in races like this. Vanspeybrouck is here as his lieutenant and also finds a place on the favourites' list. Andorra's two pronged attack has worked well so far and they'd want to replicate that here.
Senechal has had a decent season so far, and with Kamyshev in support, will be looking to push onto the podium in a race like this. He's not the best finisher in the list, so he and his team will have to make the race hard over the cobbles.
Trentin has picked up his performances recently and a profile like this is perfectly suited to his strengths, given the chance of a reduced bunch sprint is ever-present.
Gerts hasn't exactly lived up to his off-season improvements in cobbled races. Not that he's had a bad season, but it's been more his efforts on the hills that have got him glory rather than his Northern Classics exploits. He'll be hoping to improve on the same in this race.
Always a candidate for a late attack and to throw a spanner into the works for seemingly stronger riders, Vanbilsen will be looking to keep his form going and be a candidate for a Top 5 finish in a race like this.
Spengler is strong over the cobbles but his relatively weaker support stats have so far held him back as a top cobbles competitor. It is not expected to change much in this race, but he'll be looking to improve on the same.
Kristoff is a stronger sprinter than a cobbles rider, but he should have the strength to stay with the pack unless things get incredibly difficult over the stones. He has the fastest finish of anyone in the favourites list and is perhaps the one most hoping for a easy ride over the cobbles,
Ferreira and Fenn are relatively weaker leaders than the others in the list and will be hoping to get into the Top 10 as a best case scenario.
Ringheim is the third option for a strong Grieg team while Bohli is expected to keep Spengler out of trouble for as long as he can.

Can't believe we're inaugurating a Gabonese cobbled classic without Bakari Shame on you fjhoekie!

Well, this should be interesting. Think we could see a quite big bunch coming together towards the end to be honest. Will be interesting to see how a rider like John Degenkolb will do.
Should anyway be a good race for Pedersen and I hope that Wisniowski can go on the attack. Hopefully a place on the podium for us!

It's time for some Gerts magic.

I expect nothing from this race, but any point won here would be good thing...I guess?

I guess on paper Karatzios should be around 20th with this lineup. I really hope for a pleasant surprise though. It’s his last chance to score points higher than for finishing a race.

10th is obviously a good result from Karatzios looking at the startlist, but it always “suck” to not do particularly well in a decisive break. Still a good result, better than what could have been expected!

Good ride by Jansen. Happy with how he reacted, but don't think it was the best choice from our point of view. To hold it together for Pedersen would probably have been better and could have given us some better depth scoring.
Not very surprised given the hybrid kind of race that a break managed to stay away, but a lesson learned and I doubt we will choose the band with this race again (also was our fourth choice).
Thanks for the report!

Disappointing race. Roosen saving some points but that's about it.
An upside is our former rider taking the win. Congrats, Gustav!
Thank you for the report.

Expected not a lot seeing how Van Hooydonck did so far in all races.
Him attacking for the break was weird then.
With Van Der Hoorn following later 7th and 8th is obviously fantastic but also feels like a missed opportunity when having two riders. Later tried but potentially they should have done smarter for the big coup.
Though can be happy to have been part of the break and taking some points here.
Funny though that even when Hooydonck finally doing better than a late top100 and even inside top10, it's still Van Der Hoorn being the teams best performer in the cobbles once more. |

I guess we have to be happy with Manakov's 5th place, but the overall team result is quite disappointing. Congratulations Gustavovskiy; crazy victories are the best!

Every little point its a gift in a cobbled race. But i never thought that we can gain that much like in all cobbled race what we gained in this race. Great race and positioning by Pons. (i started to raise Havik a lot time ago, so im happy for him too)
Thanks for the report and congrats Gustakovkiy. |

Very nice of us to be in the break with Rowe here. Being one of the strongest sprinters here meant we had to aim high if they made it to the finish first and a podium is very much welcomed!
Its a shame Van Bearley couldn't manage to stay with the group after expending so much energy as having 2 in the front group would have done is nicely.

Indeed, they are, thanks.
Came back to double check on this one. Havik has just paid himself off.
Thanks for the report Abi!
