Tour of South Africa Stage 5
Today's favorites
*** Stauff
** Groenewegen, Havik
* Zabel, Huff, Breakaway
The race
Today another flat stage. There is just one categorized hill on the route today and the finish is after a downhill. The race should favor the sprinters for that reason. The GC-riders could better take a day of rest because of the stage for tomorrow.
A break of 5 riders is formed. They arent dangerous for the KoM, so we let them go. The riders are: Olsen , Sbaragli , Gorodnichev , Wolfe and Weber . The pack is lead by Rabobank, De Rijke and us.
At sprint 1, its a battle between Sbaragli and Olsen , won by the first named. The rest doesnt sprint.
The lead maxxes to 7min47.
Wolfe is the only one who cares about the KoM, meaning he gets the points.
Sprint 2 brings the same result as sprint 1.
From now on, it is just pack versus break, without any sprints until the finish. It looks like the pack is going to win this battle.
The pack has had some difficulties, but the break is over at 5.5kms from the finish line.
We have the strongest train by far and Groenewegen will be launched perfectly.
At the line it is
Groenewegen ! How is it possible? 2nd is Zabel , who came just short, 3rd is lead-out Grenda . Ewan manages to come 8th.
Groenewegen holds the GC lead with 48 seconds, meaning he can lose 28 seconds tomorrow. Most riders however are 1min08 behind. The other classifications didnt change either.

Interview with Dylan Groenewegen
Reporter : Hello Dylan, how are you doing?
Groenewegen : Hi, I am feeling great of course.
Reporter: How do you feel about your victories the last 3 days?
Groenewegen: That you even have to ask. It is brilliant this could have happened. This wouldnt have been possible without my great sprint train however.
Reporter: You have a big lead in the GC. How do you estimate your chances of holding on at the Old Helshoogte Pas?
Groenewegen: I don't know yet, we will just see what happens. I of course hope to hold on, but I have to remain realistic.
Reporter: Who do you see as the biggest contenders and thus your main rivals for the GC?
Groenewegen: I think Golcer really is the favorite for tomorrow, but Derk looked very strong in stage two.
Reporter: Since you mention Derk, who will be your leader for tomorrow?
Groenewegen: We will decide that during the race.
Reporter: Due to your good results already, the rumours begin to come you will ride for Orica-GreenEdge next season. What can you tell us about that?
Groenewegen : I havent heard anything about that yet, but I of course hope the rumours are true. My dream is to ride for a WorldTour team next season, and this team is a great step to the WorldTour. That it is for a sprinters team, could only make me happier.
Reporter: Okay, thanks for your time and good luck tomorrow.
Groenewegen : Thanks
Next stage up tomorrow

Today's favorites
*** Golcer
** Beckeringh, Sevilla
* Venter, Duyn, Breakaway
The race
Today we have the most difficult race of this years Tour of South Africa. Not only do we have three mountains sprints, of which one is 1st category, on the way, but we will also finish on the top of the Old Helshoogte Pas. The GC will probably be decided today.
We get a break of 5 men today, with the following riders in: Spengler , for Scott-Tissot, Driscoll , for Jamis, Dakteris for Differdange , Anthony for Optum and Hamilton for Jelly Belly. The pack is lead by De Rijke and EPM.
At the first KoM of today, categorized as 2, Spengler gets the points from the group.
The pack lets the lead grow to a maximum of 7min31.
At the second KoM, Driscoll does go for it and wins ahead of the polkadots. Spengler still has a lead of 34 points.
At the final categorized climb before the Helshoogte, Spengler is blocked, meaning Driscoll can take these points. The lead in the KoM is still 30 points, meaning Spengler is already sure of the polkadots in the end.
At the sprint, Anthony takes some points. The lead is, with 27.5 kms left, 2min40.
To increase the pace in the pack, Watson and Reus attack, 18kms from the line.
6,5 kms from the line: The break is still ahead, with Groenewegen now on the attack. He is 1min22 behind Hamilton and 1min06 behind the pursuit group.
2,5 kms from the line: Dakteris up ahead solo, followed by a group of 6 and then the pack with the yellow jersey.
1.5 kms from the line: still the Latvian, but he will be caught soon.
1km from the line: Venter is leading the sprint.
At the line
Venter holds on, meaning the first victory for MTN in their home country. 2nd is Sevilla , 3rd Remme . Groenewegen finishes 10th, but will he hold on in the GC?
No, he loses it by 11 seconds. This does however mean that if he ends at least 2nd tomorrow, he still wins. He does hold his other jerseys.

Tomorrow we have the final stage of this tour. A flat stage it is, so Dylan might be able to take enough bonus time for the end win. Whether he will do that, is not sure. We will see tomorrow

Tour of South Africa Stage 6
Today's favorites
*** Stauff
** Groenewegen, Havik
* Zabel, Huff, Breakaway
The race
Today the final stage in South Africa. The race is just 100kms long and called flat, but in the circuit we do are slopes of over 8%. The last one is at 5kms from the line. Nevertheless, the sprinters are favorite.
In the hard rain, 5 riders manage to break away: Manfredi , Hagman , Soladay , Weber and Rincon .
Meanwhile, the pack is lead by Rabobank, De Rijke and MTN.
Even though there are sprints on the way, there is no battle to win. Just a cat-and-mouse-game today.
The cat gives some space to the mouse, a lead of 4min21.
With 15kms left, the lead has decreased to exactly 1 minute.
The group is reeled in 5.5 kms from the line.
At the line it is
Zabel easily beating Groenewegen and [b]Candelario . Ewan is 11th. Sorry for the fact I dont have a screen of that, a combination of excitement and incompetention has happened
The winner of the GC has become: Groenewegen ! By 1 little tiny very second. 1/60th of a minute. But he has won and is the totally deserved winner. He also wins the Points and -25 competition.

An interview with two future stars
Reporter : Hello Lukas and Dylan, how are you doing?
Both: We are feeling good at the moment
Reporter: Lukas, you were the surprise of this year, by winning the KoM. Was that your goal on this tour?
Spengler : I was actually here to make my first kilometers to be good later in the season. At stage 1, on the attack, I fealt really good and took the KoM jersey. In stage 2 it was even better and then it had become my goal.
Reporter : You obviously like to be in breaks. Is that where we can expect you throughout the season or could you be the leader as well?
Spengler: It seems like I am doomed to just win KoMs, but I will surely go for that. If necessary, I can also be in a serving role or in the train for Dylan.
Reporter : Thank you, now to Dylan: You won the GC, your second time this season. Does this feel like a surprise to you?
Groenewegen: At the beginning of the tour I thought something like this would be impossible. I had a bad day in stage 1 and the original team goal was to reach a Stage Win. At stage 2, I had a really good day, finishing third on the hilly stage. I was sure a stage win would come as the next 3 stages had hills on them as well. When I won all those stages, I fealt like I really had a chance.
Reporter : You didnt seem the happiest man in the world after the last stage. Why?
Groenewegen: There is a reason for it: with my winners mentality I want to win everything I can. So when I lost that sprint to Rick, I felt quite pissed. We are still good friends out of cycling however.
Reporter : What do you think of the role of your team this tour?
Groenewegen: I think the team was even more important than me. I was protected throughout the tour by Joshua and Derk, my sprint train was set up perfectly every stage, apart from stage 1, where we were blocked. The team was also good at toughening the races, by being in almost every break. This made it harder on the hills, which was an advantage for me against the other sprinters.
Reporter : Do you think you could win another 2.2 race like this, or even a 2.1?
Groenewegen : I certainly hope so, but I had my peak a bit earlier in the season. These races were important for our sponsors, so I peaked for them. You will see me back further on in the season, I can guarantee you that.
Reporter : After the last stage the rumours have been growing about Orica-GreenEdge. Do you think you will ride for them next season?
Groenewegen : I still havent heard anything, but what is not yet, may still come. For now on, I will however focus on the development team.
Reporter : Thanks for your time and I hope I can interview you again soon.
Today or tomorrow: Preview March
