More interest, and first 'Carlos Sastre award' (naming decision pending) nominee. I agree is a tough challenge, as it should be! Nesset has the rider profile to make a good fist of it given the rub of the green. Needs to be kept in mind that certain guaranteed top 10 riders can't ride two GT's this season, so that cuts down a little on the potential overall strength in the top 10, making a shift upwards across the board. How has Nesset fared in GT's to date since maxing? Unfortunate for him that in MG universe Vuelta is inbetween Giro and Tour, or he would already be totting up consecutive GT's background for a tilt at the hansen award in a season or two further!
I actually lied, seems like I looked at my 2015 planner, not 2016 planner. Last year he did the Vuelta and the Tour, so he's almost at Koep level considering the Hansen award
Though, last year's result is far from encouraging thinking of top 20s, as he went 27th in the Tour and 69th in the Vuelta, riding in support for Guldhammer in both. At least he has got some extra motivation now that a Carlos Sastre award is on the line!
Brambilla for alexkr00 is actually a a serious candidate, I'd say. Expect he'll be one of very few 79 MO riders doing all three GTs. He has got the hill stat as well to survive in the Tour. That one should be really interesting for sure! |

Fantastic to see this up again Scorchio Apparently Lejarreta did do it, in '89, coming 19th Vuelta, 10th Giro and 5th Tour
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

He is unlikely to achieve Top 20 in any GT, but I am going to send Tyron Giogieri to all 3 GTs this year. Raced only Vuelta last year though.
Btw Alejandro Valverde managed to finish 3rd, 6th and 12th in one season in all 3 GTs last season. The best combo ever is Gastone Nencini's 1st, 6th and 9th in 1957 as well as Raphael Geminiani's 4th, 6th and 3rd in 1955.

Here are all previous finishers of all 3 GTs in one season. Kolesnikov almost has two 'Sastre' awards to his name! Although it must be noted that Sastre finished 13th in the 2008 Tour de France. Frank Schleck won that one!

Brilliant stuff guys. You are right jandal, Lajaretta did manage it in 1989, I was relying on procyclingstats in lieu of memory, and it only lists a top 10 GC in Vuelta when you look closely, so looks like dhe only did 2 GT's, that year which is in fact of course incorrect. However, following Romans' excellent contirbution, I have decided (as a great lover of cycling hostory) that the top award will be finalised as the 'Geminiani-Nencini' Award, and utilise the 'Marino Lejerreta' award title for the 2 GT's top 10 as he managed this a good number of times, and spreads our award namees from the 50's through the '80's to Hansen today! . Will update the initial thread shortly.
Spoiler Apologies to those already referencing the 'holding' titles, will not now change, at least for this season!
Brilliant info from SN as well, thanks for making the effort to dig out and post. Does mean that Ignatenko would be favourite for the award of the Adam Hansem title at the end of the season, but requires 3 strong assumptions (i) He'll be nominated, (ii) he's riding all 3 or at least some of the early ones to continue his current stint, and (iii) that he finishes the races!
The fact that SN's info suggests only Kolesnikov (2015) has previously met the criteria for the now finalised 'Geminiani-Nencini' Award underlines just how much of a challenge it is (only quickly skimmed after getting back in, wll look very closely at a later point!). I still think the changes to RD's this season both makes it more difficult (ruling out some guys who used to have 63 RD's and no longer do), and easier (the very top guys can't do 2 GT's anymore, clearing the field just a little). Will make a very interesting sub-plot throughout the season .
Finally, fun to see some current/previous Scorchio Cycling Managment associated riders listed as having achieved the 'triple' in one season with previous teams, even if in lowly positions (guys like Jay Thomson from this years roster, and Ruban Ibanez and Sergio Ortega from Nutresa times).
Oh, and we are up to 26 posts already which is awesome, even if majority of them mine .

From the Kraftwerk HQ, they will be attending the ToA and bringing Kiserlovski to lead the team (unfortunately for the rest of us!)
As for UBS, our squad is:
Patrick Schelling (Leader)
Marcel Aregger (Sprinter)
Sébastien Ivars (Domestique/TTT)
Silvan Dillier (TTT)
Jose Goncalves (Domestique/TTT)
Théry Schir (Domestique)
Michael Schär (TTT)
Basilio Ramos Ticona (TTT)
I think Schelling can top 5. I'm hoping we can win the TTT as well, but we'll have to see who else shows up.

Welcome on board folks. Two more PCT team confirmations means we now have some sort of confirmation notification from half of the teams participating already .
Team UBS bringining a very strong TTT focussed unit in support of Schelling's overall aspirations. Schelling displays the classic stage racer characteristics and definitely identifes as a dark horse for the win, or podium potential. Aregger perhaps the most 'complete' sprinter listed thus far, but perhaps lacks the top edge sprint to justify favourite tag. Expecting a few more very interesting sprinters to make an appearnace as the final teams get on board the ToA hype train!
Not too dis-similarly, Kraftwerk strongly backing Kiserlovski with a bit of a mountain train going-on. Kiserlovski also identifies as the 'classic' stage-racer type, and joins the rarefied '80' mountain club identified thus far from the teams polled.
Starting to see real competition across the board but no out-and-out GC favourite in my eyes. Nice tight battle for the overall is what us neutral observers like myself would hope to see! Same in the sprint wars; will we see a team commit fully to the sprint and bring a strong train and a 'flat-beast' or two to keep breakaways on the flat stages in check? Stay tuned for further news as it breaks!

Damn it, hoped for a stronger startlist at the ToA at this point as most of the PCT teams are confirmed. Kiserlovski the biggest climber of the ones attending so far, but not a "winner" yet like f.e. Berhane. But I expect at least one Eritel leader and a strong Ticos squad here

Great job you're doing with this Scorchio. Also impressive data from SN about riders who had ridden 3 GT in the same year. Really interesting to see which teams/riders are going to ToA.
If transfers had gone different for me, i would have considerer going to ToA. But giving my goals, i would have needed to sign also Contador, and although i was really close ¡2 times! at the end he went too expensive for me
One suggestion, what about calling the "Top20 in 3 GT award" the "Alejandro Valverde award". He is the most recent guy in RL to do it (last year, with a worse place of 12th), and maybe a better fit than 2 riders who were active in the 50's.
(Nothing to do with Valverde racing in my team, didn't thought about it until i started writing this post)

Thanks Aquarius. Decided that Valverde has an explicit connection with substances/bans that won't be discussed further. (not that I am naive enough to think that cycling was any less dirty in the '50's or '80's either in reality!). Valverde is a nice guy in real life (i've ridden with him in the past, many moons ago), but I also like that the three awards titles span a large period of (IRL) cycling heritage. Perhaps in future MG seasons, the likes of Ignatenko will create such legends that there will be a clamour to rename titles in MG riders honour as they retire in future!
Last thought is that folks shouldn't feel peer pressure to pipe up or reveal full squads, etc. if they don't want to, everyone is free to follow their own approach, although all contributions most welcome .

Only thing I can do is confirm that we are not going to America.
Out of interest has there ever been a GT winner go to America or an America winner go to one of the 3 GT's?
It would be cool to see the highest placing either way and keep track of it going forward as well as your other awards.

Thanks sammy, a confirmed none appearance will help narrow the detective work down if we are left with only 1 or 2 unconfirmed starters .
A simple previous winners lists confirms that most of these guys have had a go at a GT at one time or another. Would take a while to track down exactly when and how they fared (maybe a project for a winter's night!). Also 99.99% sure past PT GT winners have started in ToA, even if only as they were in their declining years.
| Franco Pellizotti | 2011 | | Robert Kiverlovski | 2012 | | Andrei Kaskechkin | 2013 | | Andrei Kaskechkin | 2014 | | Natnael Berhane | 2015 | | Dominico Pozzovivo | 2016 |
Also highlights (which I didn't have in mind) that we now already have 2 of the 3 still active winners returning in 2017 in Kiserlovski and Pozzovivo . Kaskechin unfortunately failed to find a suitor during transfers, and ignominously will retire at the end of the 2017 season after tooling around at some amateur races .

Glad to see a historic choice in naming the categories. It wouldn't be right to name them in tribute to parallel world achievements!
I believe Pellizotti has the dubious honour of being the rider to finish 2nd in a GT with the largest gap to 1st. That was the 2010 Giro, riding as the World Champion for Accumalux. Kashechkin has been 2nd in the Vuelta, Pozzovivvo 3rd in the Giro.
Natnael Berhane will naturally be returning to his favourite race. A victory by 23 seconds, and a defeat by 38 seconds, let's see what 2017 has to offer. Van Heerden will not be returning though, as it is Afewerki's chance to shine. He has the characteristics that are well suited to a Grand Tour, relative survivability on climbs, excellent recovery, a trained sprint stat and a better acceleration. A first pro victory would be fantastic to see here.
Incidentally, Berhane has never ridden a PT GT.

Thanks a lot for all the stats, really proud of the GT structure at Tinkoff ->
Petr Ignatenko's run will end this year (he will ride the Giro '17 and Vuelta '17), so 11 GT's in a row.

Aha, so we have all but a shoe-in for the first awarding of the 'Adam Hansen' award in the 2017 season, step forward Petr Ignatenko . All eyes will be glued to coverage of the Giro, or ears pricked to hear his race number on race radio in the hope that nothing derails his quest to qualify for the award by completing the Giro this season. He has the potential to set an enviable record that it may take a good few season to see surpassd in the MG, although the instigation of such awards of course should hopefully bring greater focus towards chasing such achievements!.
For anyone concerned as to how Ignatenko's potential success would impact the Hansen award going forward, it will be awarded each season to the rider with the highest accumulated total with a qualifying ride in that season. We will of course all be paying attention to records previously established with an eye on new barriers being broken!
Given the information emerging from our resident historians it is also under consideration to award the Geminiani -Nencini in 'gold', 'silver' and 'bronze' medals equating to achieving a record in one season of completing all 3 GT's, and securing 1 GC top 20 (bronze), 2 GC top 20's (silver), and 3 GC top 20's (gold). This is still under review by the awarding commitee .
To finish on the PT GT awards, we are perhaps slightly surprised that Tinkoff did not have any nominations for the Lejerreta or Hansen awards for 2017 when providing their update! Nominations from all PT quarters will remain open until the first GT kicks-off in earnest in the spring.
Changing focus to the PCT's very own GT, the Tour of America, we have now recieved confirmation that all 3 active defending champions witll be participating in 2017 with the addition of Natnael Berhane. This is a mouth-watering prospect for all cycling fans to look forward to, seeing these three storied riders return to battlegrounds that have provided such headline grabbing previous success. Berhane perhaps carries the burden (thus far) of race favourite, being the first '81' mountain rider to be confirmed, although a number of his competitors will maintain faith that their superior time-trail ability will overcome this advantage.
The addition of emerging Eritrean sprinter Elias Afewerki is also an intriguing prospect, ensuring Eritrel - Sonatrech not only bring an African focussed squad, but more specifically two Eritrean leaders. Word on the street is that young Elias has been undergoing some serious training across the winter period that is paying major dividends. A rider just steping into the body of his career, but already in a position to start amassing an impressive palmares.
That ends today's news summary update for today, as always, more news and additional commentary as it breaks!

Will we also get a Geminiani - Nencini in red? For the rider that finishes all three GTs the closest to the laterne rouge?

With Giro approaching quickly it's time to revive this thread:
I'll nominate Vosekalns and Koch for the Marino Lejerreta Award. Will be damn tough but let's see how close they can get :P
I'll start the discussion by revealing my Giro line-up:
Andris Vosekalns
Evaldas Siskevicius
Emils Liepins
Kaspars Sergis
Christoph Taubel
Marc Potts
Yannick Stoltz
Krists Neilands
Evonik starts the Giro with a two-headed set-up:
Clear GC leader is Andris Vosekalns. The expectation is a top 20 finish but i also hope to see him in breaks in the final week to perhaps get a stage win or get close to the KoM jersey.
Evaldas Siskevicius is here as our primary stage hunter. I don't expect any good puncheurs here and this route will probably attract the more "pure climber" so Siskevicius might be one of the best specialists for hilly stages here. Particularly stage 5 but also stage 13 looks made for him. Hoping for a stage win and aggressive racing from him.
Liepins is our sprinter here but i have no expectations in him. This race doesnt look like it will attract many sprinters so perhaps he can get a top 5-10 on a stage or two.
Sergis is the other rider from our team who could join a break on the uphill stages. The rest of the team is filled with members of our cobbled squad with Taubel, Potts, Stoltz and Neilands all being present here. The later two will start all three Grand Tours to go for the Gemiani - Nencini in red. :P
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Well, that is one sprinter down atleast.
Bryan Coquard will be here and I hope for a stage win. It will be difficult, but it's as good a chance as it get's I think.
The combination of a prologue and two flat stages in a row was too tempting, despite it probably not paying off...
Also this will be our weakest GC setup in a very long time. Yuriy Vasyliv will lead the team. I don't know what to expect. Hopefully a top 25 and a good and aggressive effort. But it can go either way really.
