A race that suits everyone's skillset, and also nobody's skillset - the Tour of Northern Europe is upon us! Will it be a race for the cobblers, the puncheurs, the TTers, or some weird amalgamation of the three?
| Cobblers | | HIL | COB | TT | STA | RES | Wisniowski | 71 | 83 | 74 | 75 | 76 | Spengler | 65 | 83 | 62 | 72 | 73 | Bewley | 70 | 82 | 70 | 77 | 75 | Blythe | 66 | 82 | 68 | 76 | 71 | Senechal | 67 | 82 | 65 | 79 | 74 | Kamyshev | 65 | 82 | 65 | 81 | 75 | Stallaert | 67 | 81 | 58 | 76 | 68 | Teunissen | 67 | 81 | 64 | 77 | 73 | Sibilla | 63 | 81 | 58 | 72 | 68 | Gerts | 78 | 80 | 67 | 76 | 80 | Theuns | 74 | 80 | 65 | 76 | 73 | Vanbilsen | 69 | 80 | 63 | 80 | 74 | Pedersen | 69 | 79 | 69 | 78 | 80 | Per | 70 | 79 | 72 | 74 | 75 | Kasperkiewicz | 73 | 79 | 70 | 73 | 75 | Sulimov | 70 | 79 | 65 | 77 | 71 | Fenn | 61 | 79 | 63 | 75 | 71 | Zubov | 63 | 79 | 66 | 70 | 69 |
Wisniowski is the reigning champion, but he'll face stiff competition from 2018 winner Bewley. Meanwhile Gerts, Theuns, Per and Kasperkiewicz headline the list of cobblers seeking to take their first victory in this race.
| Puncheurs | | HIL | COB | TT | STA | RES | De Bie | 84 | 68 | 72 | 77 | 76 | Ponzi | 83 | 67 | 67 | 76 | 71 | Van Garderen | 82 | 67 | 69 | 78 | 75 | Koretzky | 81 | 63 | 63 | 77 | 70 | Gastauer | 81 | 58 | 65 | 77 | 69 | Jensen | 80 | 55 | 67 | 77 | 73 | Bystrom | 79 | 56 | 61 | 75 | 72 | Serry | 78 | 67 | 63 | 71 | 70 | Meurisse | 77 | 68 | 67 | 74 | 74 | Zakarin | 77 | 61 | 68 | 74 | 73 | Furdi | 77 | 65 | 65 | 76 | 73 | Vliegen | 77 | 68 | 61 | 76 | 70 | Budyak | 77 | 56 | 68 | 72 | 66 | Le Roux | 77 | 64 | 63 | 74 | 71 | Van der Lijke | 76 | 64 | 66 | 73 | 71 | Gaudu | 76 | 57 | 66 | 76 | 74 | Lammertink | 76 | 60 | 66 | 75 | 73 | Lane | 76 | 56 | 63 | 70 | 68 | McCormick | 76 | 53 | 65 | 74 | 71 | Hofland | 76 | 62 | 66 | 76 | 72 | Kulimbetov | 76 | 54 | 60 | 75 | 70 | Edet | 76 | 52 | 58 | 72 | 68 |
If a puncheur is to take the win then De Bie would be the obvious choice, despite his poor season so far. Ponzi and Van Garderen are also names to watch, but few of the top puncheurs here are comfortable on the pave or the TT bike.
| TTers | | HIL | COB | TT | STA | RES | Durbridge | 67 | 53 | 81 | 73 | 74 | Lammertink | 69 | 65 | 80 | 70 | 76 | Yatsevich | 68 | 64 | 80 | 76 | 81 | Dillier | 64 | 68 | 80 | 74 | 77 | Hepburn | 66 | 60 | 79 | 74 | 77 | Malori | 68 | 58 | 79 | 74 | 73 | Haugard | 60 | 56 | 79 | 74 | 77 | Wirtgen | 74 | 65 | 78 | 75 | 74 | Oliveira | 73 | 72 | 78 | 75 | 75 | Goncalves | 71 | 53 | 78 | 76 | 72 | Van Niekerk | 67 | 64 | 78 | 73 | 75 | Stannard | 54 | 65 | 78 | 68 | 69 | Van Baarle | 72 | 74 | 77 | 77 | 76 | Kung | 73 | 72 | 77 | 74 | 72 | Tennant | 68 | 53 | 77 | 74 | 74 | Turek | 68 | 58 | 77 | 72 | 73 | Cheung | 67 | 57 | 77 | 72 | 74 | Tanfield | 62 | 64 | 77 | 72 | 73 | Frison | 67 | 54 | 77 | 73 | 71 |
While Durbridge may be the best pure TTer here, this doesn't look like a race for him. Instead, expect the likes of Oliveira, Van Baarle and Kung to come to the fore given their skills on the hills and cobbles.
| All-Rounders | | HIL | COB | TT | STA | RES | Polanc | 73 | 78 | 70 | 78 | 73 | Debesay | 74 | 77 | 72 | 75 | 79 | David | 75 | 78 | 65 | 76 | 74 | Gaday | 75 | 78 | 65 | 75 | 72 | Declerq | 73 | 77 | 68 | 73 | 71 | Bohli | 68 | 77 | 70 | 79 | 75 | Kozhatayev | 74 | 70 | 72 | 71 | 75 | Kruijswijk | 71 | 73 | 72 | 75 | 72 | De Buyst | 70 | 75 | 68 | 73 | 75 | Potts | 74 | 76 | 66 | 74 | 75 | Anderberg | 69 | 76 | 74 | 75 | 75 | Jansen | 70 | 76 | 65 | 75 | 72 | Cosnefroy | 71 | 69 | 76 | 77 | 79 | Van Hooydonck | 70 | 78 | 70 | 73 | 72 | Malecki | 74 | 73 | 70 | 70 | 74 | Ganna | 70 | 66 | 76 | 71 | 77 | Cavagna | 74 | 73 | 76 | 75 | 74 | Kaczmarek | 75 | 69 | 75 | 74 | 75 | Bester | 72 | 74 | 73 | 74 | 71 | Feng | 73 | 70 | 70 | 74 | 72 | Vermote | 70 | 74 | 70 | 74 | 71 | Weinstein | 70 | 67 | 75 | 72 | 70 | Arissol | 71 | 72 | 72 | 70 | 73 | Boom | 71 | 70 | 74 | 69 | 70 |
As you can see, there are a number of riders who wouldn't be traditional favourites but have the strong all-round capacities needed to succeed here. Polanc, Debesay, Van Hooydonck and Cavagna are this reporter's picks, but it could be anyone who springs a surprise.

The opening TTT promises to be a challenge for the teams, with the cobbles adding a large element of uncertainty into the mix. cycleYorkshire and Team UBS bring the best TTT teams in usual conditions, but Team Tinkoff - La Datcha and Grieg-Maersk will try to take advantage of the cobbles. Neutrals will of course be rooting for Evonik - ELKO.

We have a strong field for the three flat stages, headlined by Degenkolb. However, strong competition for him comes in the form of Bewley, Van der Lijke and Gaviria, while Houle can't be discounted during his wildcard appearance.

Pretty sure Gaviria is a wildcard as well, let's see how many points we can steal!
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Very excited about this wildcard entry, hope we can get in the thick of it and not just be anonymous, and hopefully of course get some results to remember as well Bringing a solid punchy sprinter, Viana do Castelo winner Meurisse and an all-rounder like Debesay isn’t a top lineup in the context of the PT but hope it’s good enough to see us in the action!

This is always a cool race; looking forward! I don't think any of our riders can compete for the prime positions. But we do have some guys who might be able to do a decent job.

Not sure what to expect from my team, but it should be an exciting race, nonetheless.

Always excited for this! How big the gaps will be in the cobbled stage should be interesting to see. Perhaps 3* will make it possible for the puncheurs/hybrids to get closer to the specialists than last year at least. We of course hope to defend the win, but I'm really fearing Gerts.
I hope we can get a good start and just manage to have the team in a good position all the way through. Hopefully Wisniowski will be in the lead after the ITT and then it's all about hanging on to it.

Nice preview, jph! Thank you for that.
Very nervous for this one! We can't expect any decent points with our lineup, but I fear we'll need it if we're going to survive in the PT. It's a year too early for Anderberg, but we still believe, Hampus!
Obviously need some luck on the hills with positioning and the hills not being decisive and foring big splits, and then the cobbles and TT to play in his favour. It's a lot to ask, but I've got to hope
This is always an exciting race. Wisniowski probably has to be the overall favourite, but this is wide open, all depending on how the stages on different terrains play out.
Also curious to see what especially Debesay can do, as he must be close to the perfect rider for this race, among those riders not being typical PT leaders material. |

Well well well.
There we go.
A team of unmaxed or old riders plus De Bie...guess it`s the only race all year, where De Bie can`t be expected to do well GC wise and might actually go for a stage performance...
Other than that, not sure who of my riders going strongest. Van der Poel, Boom, Hooydonck...
At least it should give some points here and there. |

This is basically the perfect race for Kasperkiewicz lets see what he can do also with the cobbles stage probably not being as selective as last time.
Also brought Hsu and Jakobsen for the sprints, after Hsu already got good results here last year when he wasn't maxed. However the sprinters field seems more competitive this time, so don't know what to expect.
Thanks for the preview, jph! Looking forward to the reports. |

Prepared for another disappointing effort from David, who's had a terrible season until this point.. Maybe someone will positively surprise me here though..

Excited for this one. I think we have a great mixed team for the TTT, and between Spengler and Ponzi we should be able to achieve something special. Thanks for the preview!

Well, we somehow won the TTT here last season and bring a stronger lineup this time...
Apart from that, I have to hope for breakaways and for Declerq and/or Cavagna to shine through consistency.
Declerq knows how to do that here, and Cavagna was trained in the perfect way to take over that role.

Probably the most 'interesting race on the calendar here as we come in hot with Van Baarle as our likely captain here. I hope he is all round enough to survive the harder stages and leverage a decent TT to climb the GC later in the race. I don't really know what to expect here starting with that opening TTT, hopefully this will be an enjoyable race!

A very good ride by the team again, particularly in the context of the time gains over most other lineups that sets up Cavagna and Declerq quite well.
However, considering the circumstances of the narrow fight for our Top 3 sponsor goal in the team rankings, I can't help but be slightly disappointed that we missed out on a good chunk of points by mere seconds.
I hope this won't come back to bite us down the road.

Solid from us looking at our lineup! Happy with that.
Fingers crossed we can join the breakaway fun going forward now, as we can't have great GC ambitions here. |
