Praha - Karlovy Vary - Praha
Thanks to whitejersey for the preview, and apologies for the delay in the race getting underway!
Welcome to the 8th edition of Praha - Karlovy Vary – Praha, a 4-stage race with a heavy priority on the race against the clock with a prologue and one of the longest ITTs on the schedule this season! Furthermore, there are 2 stages which one paper look to be heavily favoured towards the sprinters of the field. The race has historically speaking been a Phinney masterclass with the American phenomenon having won the previous 4 editions in dominating fashion. He is of course back to contest the race once again, but without much further ado let’s dive into the startlist and take a look at the riders who will be contesting him.
| FL | HIL | TT | RES | PRL | Phinney | 73 | 77 | 83 | 74 | 83 | Würtz | 77 | 71 | 82 | 78 | 79 | Keizer | 72 | 71 | 81 | 79 | 81 | Coppel | 75 | 74 | 81 | 75 | 81 | Durbridge | 73 | 67 | 81 | 74 | 81 | Vlatos | 72 | 66 | 81 | 71 | 81 | Lammertink | 74 | 69 | 80 | 76 | 79 | Sütterlin | 71 | 65 | 80 | 77 | 80 | Howson | 71 | 65 | 80 | 74 | 80 | Yatsevich | 70 | 68 | 80 | 81 | 80 | Viennet | 72 | 67 | 80 | 75 | 80 | Dillier | 70 | 64 | 80 | 77 | 79 | Brändle | 75 | 71 | 79 | 73 | 79 | Hepburn | 71 | 66 | 79 | 77 | 79 | Viviani | 78 | 66 | 79 | 77 | 79 | Malori | 78 | 68 | 79 | 73 | 79 | Mullen | 75 | 70 | 79 | 74 | 78 | Vorobev | 75 | 65 | 79 | 71 | 78 | Kwok | 76 | 62 | 79 | 73 | 79 | Haugard | 72 | 60 | 79 | 77 | 79 | Dal Col | 71 | 64 | 79 | 72 | 78 | Van Winden | 73 | 62 | 79 | 68 | 79 |
It’s quite hard to see any other riders really contesting Phinney this year, however a few riders may challenge him this year, there’s a newly maxed contender in Würtz around the block who might be able to contest him or at least aim for a spot of the podium, the Dane is obviously one to look out for in the future but for now he should be able to put up a good performance. Vlatos has been a household name in races with a TT for a while now, however the Greek Festina ace has finally hit his first decline and is not aiming for high points scoring rather than wins in races with a TT field with the depth of this one. Speaking of declined TT beasts Coppel is back on the World Tour trying to bring in results, he has however been through his second decline already but should be a realistic contender for top 5 in the GC. Other riders in this bracket are Durbridge Keizer all three are riders that on their day can contest Phinney but on most days will be expected to end up in the top 10 of the GC.
| PRL | Phinney | 83 | Andersen | 83 | Leung | 82 | Chavanne | 82 | Keizer | 81 | Coppel | 81 | Durbridge | 81 | Vlatos | 81 | Dennis | 81 | Sütterlin | 80 | Howson | 80 | Yatsevich | 80 | Viennet | 80 | Stoltz | 80 | Würtz | 79 | Lammertink | 79 | Dillier | 79 | Brändle | 79 | Hepburn | 79 | Viviani | 79 | Malori | 79 | Kwok | 79 | Haugard | 79 | Van Winden | 79 | Hansen | 79 | Coquard | 79 |
While the second TT is a very long ITT the initial prologue is short enough that some prologue specialists should be able to make their mark:
One rider who might be able to challenge Phinney on the prologue is Andersen. The Dane should be a good choice for someone who might be able to sneak past the American machine and get a win. A rider that we should keep an eye on during the prologue are Chavanne now that he has finally been freed and have joined Evonik – ELKO ahead of this season. The last notable specialist is Leung. The Hong Kong TT champ lacks the abilities to mix it with the best on long TTs but is fast enough to potentially have an impact on the prologue.
However Praha – Krahovy – Praha aren’t just about the sprinters the race features two flat stages to be contested by top sprinters in the peloton as well
| FL | HIL | STA | RES | SP | ACC | Coquard | 73 | 66 | 71 | 74 | 84 | 83 | Kennaugh | 77 | 65 | 74 | 71 | 82 | 81 | Groenewegen | 73 | 67 | 74 | 71 | 82 | 81 | Howard | 76 | 68 | 75 | 70 | 82 | 79 | Vanderbiest | 74 | 64 | 74 | 69 | 82 | 77 | Enger | 73 | 69 | 71 | 73 | 81 | 78 | Van Poppel | 72 | 64 | 74 | 71 | 81 | 78 | Appollonio | 74 | 66 | 71 | 66 | 81 | 78 | Ciolek | 73 | 64 | 70 | 66 | 81 | 76 | Van Asbroeck | 75 | 71 | 75 | 72 | 80 | 78 | Petit | 76 | 65 | 76 | 72 | 80 | 78 | Moser | 72 | 67 | 73 | 69 | 80 | 79 | Meyer | 72 | 62 | 70 | 65 | 80 | 76 | Goss | 72 | 65 | 70 | 68 | 80 | 75 | Granjel Cabrera | 74 | 68 | 73 | 69 | 79 | 75 | Suryadi | 71 | 62 | 72 | 68 | 79 | 76 |
In between the chronos there are a two sprint stages that most likely will not come with any changes to the GC but very much in the GC there is a big favourite for the sprint stages here, the best sprinter on the world tour Coquard has blessed us with his presence. He is not without competition however as multiple other high-end sprinters are also to be found on the start list. Kennaugh & Groenewegen are most likely going to be the other main contenders for the sprint victories. Other names to look out for are Howard & Vanderbiest who match the previous pair in terms of top speed but lack the acceleration to be on their level, however sprints are always a bit of a conundrum and sometimes miracles can happen. Riders that will be looking for said miracles are Enger, Van Poppel & Appollonio who are of the same mold as Vanderbiest and Howard, but with less top speed.

Should have kept Phinney Würtz could be hurt by the prologue, but he should really like this TT. A podium has to be the goal for him here.
Hope Kragh can do some magic in the prologue as well and hopefully we can have a decent depth in scoring, possibly even winning the team classification.
Looking forward to the race!

Not much to expect in this race but this might be the last chance for Stoltz/Chavanne to win a prologue this season. Outside of that id love to go for the KoM jersey on the last stage.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Vlatos haven’t declined yet, if we are talking stats. In fact he still have some time before that...
A top 10 could be possible if the hills aren’t too difficult. Hopefully they are easy so we can aim for a stagewin from Coquard too!

2 sprinter stages. I need no less than 2 podiums here...Frison won`t do more than maximum a late top20 in the GC, so up to Groenewegen to deliver much needed points. |

We have no real favorites here. But if the hills in those "flat" stages prove to be too much for the track TT guys, we could have some decent GC depth scoring.

Let's see how Van Poppel does against some of the bigger names. Don't really have any clear expectations from Lammertink.

Looking forward to this race. Brändle was 4th here two years ago when we had a wildcard I hope he can come close to that performance rather than his underperformance last year. Viviani and Van Winden are two more that can get a top 20 and Leung is here for the prologue again. Also hoping for a decent result in the teams classifications.
Thanks for stepping in and reporting this race in time jph! |

Sütterlin has a good record here, 5th 6th 9th and 12th since 2016.
So despite the hills looking as frightening as ever for him, I'm confident he can show up again and continue his great scoring this year after the epilogue win in Qatar and the TTT podium.
If the hills prove to be an issue, we have another overperformer in Ganna present who can aim for the U25 competition and hopefully a Top 30.
Our TTT proven squad should be deep enough for a couple more Top 50 results, from Politt and potentially Bevin if the long TT has any MO influence.
Aregger is here for the prologue and maybe a sprint participation, if we win that lottery, Weinstein is another good allround TTer, and Sagiv would be ideal to try his luck in a break on day 4 to contest the KoM jersey.
Sadly, we couldn't bring last year's breakaway surprise Stüssi to repeat his 4th place for race day reasons, but I don't think that'll happen twice in a row anyway.
Congrats Isostar on the win!

Should be a good one for us depth scoring wise, expecting to make up a few of the points we've lost along the way here. Thanks for the preview jph!

Hoping that we can grab some surprise results here. I guess the 60km TT will hurt our chances of a good GC result, but stage wins or placings could still happen if there is a breakaway.

Howson hasn't been at his best lately, but I'm hoping he could be somewhat meaningful here.
Thanks for putting things together so quickly jph!

Just as a heads up before I put the first report up tonight, these reports won't be as detailed as usual from me - no microjerseys and fewer screenshots for example - so that we can get back on track following the calendar as soon as possible.
If anyone has any major objections let me know and I'll put up edited versions of the reports after posting the original ones to keep everyone happy |

Well Sütterlin won't necessarily get a nod of approval for that ride, but there's really only one rider on the team that needs to hide from me, I can accept bad days from all the others!
Besides, Filippo Ganna stepping up with a great ride to take the white jersey makes up for anything!
I hope this will help him in his battle to overcome the -2TT he has to deal with on day 3 to stay in the jersey until the end, but even if he can't we should be looking at 6 extra points from that classification by then if tomorrow doesn't bring a significant surprise.
And with places 1-4 going to teams that shouldn't be near us in the rankings, we haven't lost relevant ground regardless of our own results.
I'd like to improve to the Top 3 in the teams classification, which should be doable in the long TT that suits Politt and Bevin better. That's always nice free points.

Rather disappointing from Leung, but at least I get one top 10 with Viviani. The second TT counts for more anyways. Dennis being so good is slowly getting annoying. |
