Everything you can say about the toughness of this race won't be enough to really define how hard is this race. Most likely the hardest route in the whole MG calendar, this mountain fest in Liechtenstein will see most of the best climbers in the world fight for the honorific title of "Best Climber of the World". With seven 83+ climbers in the race, this one is clearly the best climbing startlist in the calendar, and this also means that anything aside a win from any of these 7 riders will be a mayor surprise
The startlist will be led by the three-time defending champion, Andy Schleck. For him it's the first race of the season, and Vesuvio will be looking to inagurate their wins tally this season. Another top favourite who is also starting his season here is Rein Taaramäe. His team really needs a great performance from him to save them for relegation, so he is really pressured to do it great. Last year's runner-up, Simon Spilak leads the defending PT champion, and another podium - at least - will be key in Festina's fight for the title against Moser. Dombrowski has finished the last two years in the third place in the race, and will be looking to add another podium this time. Machado finished second in the race four years ago, in the last edition not won by Andy Schleck, beated by MG legend Damiano Cunego. He leads another newly-promoted team as Porto-Prio, who is currently looking conformtable in the rankings. The final two 83+ climbers are Tenorio and Gesink. Both Iberia and eBuddy are in serious danger of relegation and are in desperation of a big result from their climbing leaders.
| Top Favourites | MON | STA | RES | ACC | Outsiders | MON | STA | RES | ACC | Schleck | 85 | 77 | 82 | 79 | Guldhammer | 81 | 74 | 75 | 76 | Taaramäe | 85 | 79 | 80 | 76 | Herklotz | 81 | 77 | 78 | 75 | Spilak | 85 | 80 | 81 | 74 | Keizer | 81 | 75 | 79 | 73 | Dombrowski | 84 | 80 | 78 | 75 | Kiserlovski | 80 | 72 | 75 | 66 | Machado | 84 | 77 | 74 | 72 | Nerz | 80 | 75 | 72 | 68 | Gesink | 83 | 78 | 80 | 68 | Vinhas | 80 | 74 | 75 | 62 | Tenorio | 84 | 78 | 76 | 66 | Arndt | 79 | 77 | 76 | 75 | | | | | | Brajkovic | 79 | 74 | 77 | 69 | | | | | | Hirt | 79 | 75 | 77 | 75 | | | | | | Keinath | 79 | 77 | 76 | 70 | | | | | | Yates | 79 | 79 | 80 | 76 |
There are a lot of outsiders who are going to fight for a low top10 place, but with a good day could jump into the top5, like Guldhammer, Herklotz, Keizer, Kiserlovski, Yates, Hirt, Nerz or Arndt
Anyway, we'll be looking forward to one of the most exciting races of the PT calendar. The result will give us some indications of who may go onto dominate a certain GT, as most of this riders will have to battle in either Vuelta or Tour later in the season.

Time for Gesink to get his season rolling. Also, I'm 95% sure he and Taaramae are riding the same races this year

No surprise anymore: a packed startlist with too many premium climbers to give Jayco any hope for a surprising result. Top-20 is the goal though. Watch out for:
First race of the season for Haig. Let's hope he's on a good daily form to collect some first points. And with no single breakaway attempt at the Giro, I seriously expect my riders to try it here.

Top 10 is wanted here and should be possible.
Though Keizer not one of the best and without real support. Could become difficult for him but my mountain depth is not very good and Olivier/Koep in the Giro and Dekker only other mountain option basically.
Normally I`d say Schleck winning anyway and actually still believe so. But will be interesting to see Taaramae vs. Schleck for the first time.
Plus there is always the breakaway danger even though I don`t think and hope so. |

Whenever Spilak is riding we can expect whatever, as he's usually all over the place. So anything from 2nd to 10th can happen.
I expect Schleck to win and Taaramae as runner up. I can see Dombrowski taking 3rd.
Anything less than 5th will be a huge letdown. It would be Nice to see Spilak win a race though. It has been quite a while!

Hmm, not looking that bad looking on the startlist. Hirt can hopefully surprise and get a top 15 result.

Slagter for a breakaway is only hope for success here, with all my climbers in the giro. Anyway, looking forward to see the big guns battle this one out. Always a fan of such extreme stages

Herklotz clearly has the skills to be best of the rest.
Top 10 has to be the goal, with Nerz and Arndt providing great support, maybe some strategy options and hopefully Top 15-20 results of their own.

Top 10 for Kiserlovski would be a very welcome result.

It was a tough decision whether I'd attend or skip this race. All I'm hoping is to get 15 finishing points.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Not a bad startlist at all in terms of competition, I think, which could make a top 10 for Guldhammer possible on a good day. Looking at the outsiders, he really should be slightly ahead of everyone except for Herklotz, as I suspect it should be a close battle with the latter.
At the very top, I guess it will be between Taaramäe and Schleck, and the former surely needs to win to give his team a moral boost before his GT, as he really needs to deliver big time for them to stay up. |

This has become an interesting showdown for the teams in the lower half. It could be a good indicator of how good Taarame and Schleck will be this season, with both only starting their schedules now.
We really need Machado to make a stand here given our ineffectivness in the Giro, especially given the direct competition we're facing. However like Aegon we'll definitely struggle if tactis become important due to our lack of depth.

Another abandoning crash
Taaramae with a dominant win, but Belgasem was the star of the show anyway. Decent outing by Brajkovic, Top 20 is okay. Bostner also very nice.

Good performance by Nepomnyachsniy! Did not expect any kind of result here without Pluchkin, and a 10th place is a massive overperformance for sure. Shame direct rivals Ayubowan did do slightly better...

Can't say I'm unhappy with the result, since Machado managed to finish within his ballpark, but given how well Vinhas performed I would hope he would stick with the major split.
Anyway great win for Wiesenhof to break Vesuvio's dominance in this event. Impressive victory for Taramaae which should be a good indicator for the forthcoming races.
Thanks for the report, Aquarius!
