Leader's Jersey
Also known as the yellow jersey, maillot jaune, maglia rosa, pink jersey, jersey de Oro or the gold jersey. This jersey is awarded to the rider who leads the race - the rider who has completed the course in the least amount of time.
It is normally yellow, although it often varies from race to race

Maillot à Pois Rouge
More commonly known as the polka dot jersey, this is awarded to the rider leading the mountain classification in the Tour de France. The white jersey with red dots was designed in 1975, after a prodcut made by Poulain Chocolate. Richard Virenique has won it the most times, 7, whilst Mauricio Soler is the current holder

The white jersey is awarded to the fastest Under 25 rider in the Tour de France. It was first awarded in 1975, and Jan Ullrich has won it the most times, 3, whilst Alberto Contador is the current holder

Maillot Jaune
This is the jersey worn by the leader of the Tour de France. The rider with the lowest time overall is awarded the jersey at the end, and declared the winner. It is coloured yellow to reflect the colour print of the newspaper who organised the Tour, L'Auto. Lance Armstrong has won this the most times, 7, whilst Alberto Contador is the current holder

The green jersey was introduced into the Tour de France in 1953, and is worn by the points classification leader. It was coloured green after the lawn mower company which initially sponsored it. Erik Zabel has won this the most times, 6, whilst Tom Boonen is the current holder

Mountain Jersey
Also known as the Climber's Jersey, or King of the Mountains, this jersey is awarded to the rider who leads the climber's rankings - points for this are awarded at the summit of climbs.
It is most often coloured red, or with red polka dots on a white jersey.

Points Jersey
Also known as the green jersey, maillot vert, maglia ciclamino, or the purple jersey. This jersey is awarded to the rider who leads the points standings. Points are picked up for placing at the finish of races, and in intermediate sprints.

Rainbow Jersey
This is the jersey worn by the World Champion. If the rider is the World Time Trial Champion then he/she will wear the jersey only in time trials. If he/she is the World Road Race Champion then that rider will wear the jersey in every race-type other than time trials.



The wearer of the Rainbow Jersey gets noticed easily within the peleton and the fact that he/she is the world champion means that the rider will be severly well marked.
