The Race
Welcome to Portugal to one of the more unique races of the entire MGUCI calendar. Although technically a cobbles classic the puncheurs had their fair share of success in the past editions as well.
It seems like every team wanted to be in the break today and so a group of 19 riders gets away:
Cole and Kuroeda
Glivar and Reynders
Flynn and Silva
Ludvigsson and Smith
Calzoni and Siddikov
Bremanis
Eaton
Hoehn
Lilovski
McGill
Medvedev
Nommela
Pedersen
Piganzoli
Bremanis was already dropped in the first climb and is back in the peloton as are some riders who were already dropped from the peloton. It will be a very long day for those who don’t love climbing.
Kuroeda is the next victim in the break, but the gap is already down to 2 minutes anyway and there are 78 km (and two and a half climbs) still to go.
We see the first long range attacks in the next flat part. Hvideberg, Turgis and Putti are the first threesome. Langellotti, Owen, Giuliettia and Menicucci are their chasers.
All those attackers (including the break) are brought back with 55 km to go, but there are also the first major splits in the peloton. We’ll see if they persist and who’ll be in the front group then.
In the end around 100 riders enter the penultimate climb together while Putti maintains a small lead. No major names are missing yet.
Simmons was set up by Barthe and launches a strong attack! He quickly has a gap of a minute to the peloton.
And the other favourites sense they have to make their move too. Over the top of the climb a group of 9 riders forms and it includes most of the other hybrids among the favourites: Benoot, Jorgenson, Van der Poel, De Gendt, Habimana, Abrahamsen, Serrano, Giulietti and Barthe.
Abrahamsen, Giulietti and Barthe don’t last long though and were dropped in the cobbled part of the descent.
With 34 km to go Simmons has 48’’ to the 6 chasers who themselves have 34’’ to the remaining peloton.
But Abrahamsen soon brings the chasers back and so we only have Simmons out front.
But his attack is also over with 23 km to go. We now have 27 riders in the peloton.
The next small kicker sees the next attack and this time 9 riders quickly get a gap of nearly a minute. Pithie, Jorgenson, Habimana, Benoot, Van der Poel, De Gendt, Gamper, Serrano and Ssabagwanya are those probably fighting for the win today.
The nine leaders enter the final climb with a gap of 48’’ to the first chasing group of 4.
Jorgenson attacks in the last part of the climb and only Benoot, Van der Poel and Habimana are able to follow him!
But the young Rwandan wasn’t able to keep the wheel of the others and soon dropped back. But in return Ssabagwanya is getting back to the front with 7 km to go!
And those four enter the final km together. Van der Poel as the strongest sprinter leads them at the moment.
The Dutch also launched first and that’s enough to take the win! Jorgenson and Benoot complete the podium. The 4th place is still a strong result for Ssabagwanya.
De Gendt proves why he’s been treated as a steal pre-season by finishing in a strong 5th place, just in front of Pithie. Habimana comes in 7th.
Gamper, Serrano and Rossi arrive at the finish one by one to complete the top 10.
Congratulations to Van der Poel who beat the two top favourites today!
