Valter is the runaway favorite with Dina the only rider even close to him as a puncheur, but if the race isn’t too tough, Peak might fancy his chances in the uphill sprint.
Valter already attacks over the top of the penultimate hill with 10 kilometers to go. Dina and Moricz follow.
Szarka and Varga bring them back and then follow the next attack by Moricz. With Vasko and Peak in tow, this is a very potent group for the final flat stretch.
Dina and Valter manage to bridge across to that group, but the attacks keep on coming. With 4.5 kilometers to go, Szarka and Peak get a small gap.
Peak attacks again and with 2 kilometers to go, he has a 7 second gap on Szarka and another 13 on the chasers.
Into the final ramp, the gap to the group has grown to 28 seconds. Valter will need a heroic effort to close it and make good on his top favorite role.
And he’s on his way! 600 meters to go and the gap is halved to 14 seconds. Peak is visibly struggling, but can Valter keep up the pace?
It’s close, but he can’t! A perfectly timed attack on the flat and a gritty ride up the final hill give Peak the Hungarian Championship!

The absence of Pelikan and Filutas opens up the race for riders who would normally never be in contention for a TT title. Dina should be the favorite.
Valter has an outside shot to get a championship after all, even if it’s not the one he anticipated. His time is 1h10’35.
Peak could be one of the biggest surprise double winners in a while – he is 33 seconds faster than Valter.
But in the end, Dina comes through and delivers Ethiopean Airlines a very nice title, beating Peak by 38 seconds.
