After yesterday's stage Coquard and Enger are now the first two in the GC and will be looking at another opportunity to increase the gap between them and the prologue specialists, but there are plenty of sprinters here ready to make them work really hard for it.
Not a lot of opportunities in terms of KoM points for the breakaway today, yet 9 riders made it into it, with 3 from Air New Zealand-Prada. Culey had a full day yesterday, but he is once again ready to defend the polka dot jersey. The good news for him is that none of those that scored points yesterday made it into the breakaway today. The 8 riders joining him are: Wackermann, Vainionpää, Madan, Lilovski, Insausti, Quispe, Hayashibara, Piganzoli
The unpaved roads were not good news for the breakaway as it broke away ( ) into several groups, with most riders doing their own pace. Insausti was first at the top, while Culey failed to gain any points making his efforts today pointless.
It was a disaster today for the breakaway as they were one by one caught by the pack after the climb. Last one to be caught: Insausti, right before the intermediate sprint that followed the climb, which meant that the favorites could battle out for the bonus seconds.
And it was Ewan who took it in front of Van Poppel and Zariff. Three fast guys, but not exactly GC favorites.
The last intermediate sprint was much closer to the finish line though, so the big favorites didn't look like they were ready to waste to much energy for it, with Walls and Einhorn being the only big sprinters really willing to giving it a go, with the Brit actually succeeding in taking the most bonus seconds and points.
With all the intermediate sprints behind us, it's a good time to have a recap of them, with 2 going to the breakaway and two to the pack.
With 10km to go, it's clear that the stage is heading to a mass sprint, but we don't see the organized trains that we saw yesterday, MOL seem to have the most numbers. Tryg are also to get to make it a three rider train on the other side of the road, though they definitely lack the speed at the moment. Assa do seem to have the speed but not the numbers as it's once again just Coutinho for Abdul Halil
5 kilometers later the situation hasn't changed too much, but Tryg have found their speed and are now matching Mol's who have made a change of personail in their train, with Baterdene taking his place in front of Ewan as Scotson pulled to the side of the road once his job was over.
Slight bump with about 3 kilometers to go and it messed up the trains even further, as the lead-outs are at the front. Stewart, Baterdene, Huertas, Lander, Coutinho, Edmondson are all there, but the sprinters are lost in the crow.
The sprinters make their way to the front in the downhill that followed and it was actually only two lead-outs left at the front under the flamme rouge: Edmondson and Baterdene
Edmondson pulled his leader to the front there, but Coquard doesn't seem to have the speed to fight for the win today. Inside the final kilometer, in the final bend of the road, it's Ewan (who himself had a fabulous lead out) has the lead from Abdul Halil and Einhorn.
And Ewan pays off his team's fantastic work with a stage win. Abdul Halil improves on yesterday's third place, while Zariff snatches the last place on the podium from Einhorn
Plenty of bonus seconds for Ewan today, which allow him to jump up to second in the GC. No bonus seconds for Coquard or Enger who had a flying start yesterday. They are still in good positions in the GC, but they will still need more bonus seconds if they want to be able to fight for the overall win with the prologue specialists.
