Tour de Pologne

Stage 5 Report

After two long flat days we return to the hills for Stage 5. Much shorter today at 165k but the KOM battle will resume as there are 3 Cat 1s and 3 Cat 2â€™s. The finish comes after an uncategorized climb and a gentle descent. Also, one sprint point on the route.

The organizers favor the punchier riders on this stage.

Traeen knows his KOM jersey is in play today and is the first to attack. But he doesnâ€™t get any companions and quickly builds a 1â€™33 gap. Instead of sending a rider to bridge the gap Zappes KÃ¶lsch decide to put the team on the front.

Tejada wins the sprint ahead of Wackermann and Traeen. The lead up to 4â€™03 with 120k to go. The first climb, a Cat 1, starts in 20k.

None of the riders other than Traeen have any KOM points so he starts with a buffer of 38 points, but Tejada is a much better climber than him.

The Cat 1 is more punchy than long and Wackermann takes the points ahead of Traeen and Tejada.

The next climb is the Cat 2, which they will tackle 3 times. It is officially 2.5k at 4.2% but the climbing is all in the last 800 meters with gradients in excess of 10%. First time over Senyenov takes maximum head of Wackermann and Shaw. Tejada is 4th and Traeen 5th. The peloton is keeping the leash short with just at 3â€™34 gap with 86k to go. Already there are splits with 68 riders off the back. We will check on that if it persists

Bissegger (5th) are badly placed. The rest of the top 10 and the rest of the big names have made the front group although Amezawa is well back.

After a long uphill sprint the order at the next climb, a Cat 1, is Wackermann, Traeen, Shaw and Tejada.

Senyenov was dropped on the climb and is struggling to rejoin.

50k to go now for the peloton. Gap at 2â€™49. On the front Duvel (Del Grosso) and Zalgiris (Klismets, Olesen, and Gajdulewicz). The peloton briefly reformed abut has split again with 121 riders in the front group. The second time up the Cat 2 Tejada gets his first win ahead of Wackermann, Shaw and Traeen.

Traeen (68) has a 20-point lead in the KOM over Wackermann (48) with Tejada up to 5th.

Tejada pushes on solo. But with the peloton now just 49 seconds back it looks like he is just delaying the inevitable. Peloton down to 68 but Kaczmarek the only additional notable casualty so far.

Tejada is caught, ending the break. with 25k to go, 3k from the top of the 2nd ascent of the Cat 1.

Borisavljevic leads the peloton over the Cat 1. The points all go to domestiques, Traeen will hold the jersey for another day.

Quita over the top. The Yellow Jersey still in the group, he is towards the back with an armada of Bianchi riders but he only needs to survive one more uncategorized climb now. There are 6k to ride. The CT teams thriving here, they account for about a third of the riders in the final group: Bianchi (7), Podium Ambition (4), Euskotren (2), Air New Zealand (2), Parmalat (2).
