We're back in Slovenia, where the going is good and the time trials are plenty. For some, the Tour of Slovenia, or the Tour de Slovenie, as is it was known in archaic times, is one of the MG calendar's prime opportunities to showcase both aerodynamics and versatility—a test that requires many hours in the wind tunnel, but does not tolerate those who cannot withstand external obstacles.

All that to say, the race format is the same as in years past. After a flat stage to kick things off, riders will need to come together with their brethren in unity against the clock in stage 2. Then two hilly stages follow which, while not particularly grueling, are usually enough to weed out the pure time trialists. That's important, because stage 5 is one of the longest time trials on the MG calendar, a mostly flat course of over 50 kilometers.

The parcours favor a time trialist can survive the hills well, and that sounds like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eav.png Tom Wirtgen. And wouldn't you know it, history agrees. Wirtgen has won the last three editions of this race, each pretty convincingly, and he's back for more. Even worse for other teams, he's now joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/eav.png Mads Würtz, who is the second best time trialist in the world, finished on the podium last year, and was Wirtgen's runner up in 2023. While pundits may try to create stories of infighting or drama between the two, the reality is the Dane's presence just makes Vesuvio's already formidable TTT setup the best of all time, and ought to make Wirtgen's four-peat even more likely.

Not so fast though—pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/ino.png Eddie Dunbar will have something to say about that. He's already beaten Wirtgen and Vesuvio twice this year, in Paris-Nice and Ukraine, and he's ready to go at it again. He's had no issues adjusting to the PT calendar and should be poised for a top result here. The only issue is that his TTT train, while good, is nowhere near Vesuvio's. So he'll likely need to overperform to gain time on Wirtgen in the hills or the ITT.

Next we have a collection of stage racers who are strong all around but not necessarily the best time trialists here. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/sfi.png Haig is the premier name here. Usually more suited to GT's and high mountains, he will look to make the race difficult in the hills as a way to grind the worse climbers off the back. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/fas.png Phinney falls into this same category, more than he used to, in his advanced age. No longer the pure TT threat he once was, he's still capable of a top GC result here. Then there are the secondary guys like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/hvc.png Conci, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/pum.png Kämna, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/elc.png Ioannidis, who should survive with reasonable tactics, and could find themselves towards the top of the standings in the event of a more punishing race.

On the other side are more conventional time trialists who are not entirely one dimensional, and thus could survive and thrive in a somewhat easier race. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/kng.png Mano is a solid puncheur in his own right and should be the top favorite from this bunch. He can compete for a podium, or at least a top 5, even in the event of the slightly harder race. Guys like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/zal.png Kmieliauskas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/iec.png Cataford, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/yor.png Oliveira, while not weak by any means, will need to rely on good time trials and then hold on for dear life during the climbing portions.

The race begins with one flat stage, and one PTHC flat stage out of a five stage race is not the best ratio to attract top sprinters. The result is that not many sprinters are here, and those that are generally lack proper leadouts, which could lead to a messy and unpredictable opening stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/aab.png Mohamad Abdul Halil and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/blt.png Nur Aiman Zariff are the headliners here. Both are fast but very one dimensional sprinters hoping to take advantage of a weak field. The former has slightly higher top speed, but Zariff is the only competitior here with a genuine leadout man in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/blt.png Page, which could give him a leg up.

Beyond those two, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/min.png Kalaba is next. The opening stage isn't exactly pan flat, which might mean he has fresher legs at the end than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/xr0.png Lutsyshyn, who has similar speed but despises inclines.

After that, the quality drops off rather precipitously. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/yor.png Simon Yates will be stage hunting anyway, so it would not be a surprise to see him contest the stage in this field. Three stages up for grabs for him?

The TTT speaks for itself mostly. As mentioned above, EA Vesuvio are the clear favorites with their combination of star power and depth. They've also won this stage the last 3 years, and only improved since. Behind them, a good half of teams have brought some solid team here. Some have more top time trialists, while others have harnessed depth by refusing to carry dead weight. At 31k long, we'll have to see what kinds of gaps we get on this stage. Last year, the worst team was about 2 minutes behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/aab.png Morin727875736976

Stages 3 and 4 are on for the puncheurs. Stage 4 is more difficult throughout, though both are uphill finishes designed in theory to favor classics types.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/kng.png Gidich is probably the headliner of this crew. He's the best rider up the hills and is also a decent time trialist (73), which means a good GC result is not out of the question if he can attack and gain some significant time on the hills. It remains to be seen whether such time would be significant enough to overcome a 50+ km TT. His team also has to be wary of pushing things too hard since a difficult race could adversely affect his teammate Mano, but it's a dynamic to watch out for.

The aforementioned pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/yor.png Simon Yates may be the most prolific stage winner here. His sprint has always been the trick up his sleeve, and while both hilly stages end uphill, it's his acceleration will help him on either stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/fas.png Vansevenant also had a wicked acceleration that should be suited for this time of finish. That's something the man he replaced at Fastned, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/tir.png De Bie lacks at this stage of his career, though the latter is still a strong puncheur on a good day. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/gct.png Eiking lies somewhere in between those two in his skillset.

Beyond them, there are a plethora of second and third tier puncheurs here. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/min.png Van Niekerk, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/snz.png Kelderman, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/blt.png Errazkin are the ones I've decided to note here, but on a good day, anyone can surprise in these kinds of stages.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lph.png Ocampo646680

Most of the top time trialists were covered in the favorites list, but not all. Several are weak enough climbers that they will need a lot of good form and luck to survive stage 3 and 4. Nevertheless, they will be in the running for stage 5 and be a massive help to their respective teams on stage 2.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/sfi.png Marlen Zmorka is a top 3 time trialist in the world, and he'll be looking for his own glory on stage 5, though his team is probably counting on Jack Haig for the GC. Same thing for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/zal.png Beniusis. He's almost as good of a time trialist as Kmieliauskas, but the disparity in climbing ability should lead DK to favor the latter regardless of form.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/min.png Bjerg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/tir.png Lammertink are in a different spot because, despite their lack of climbing ability, they are absolutely the best GC options on their teams. They'll hope to hold on as long as possible and make the TT km's count. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2025/Micros/lph.png Ocampo is probably in this same group.

Thanks for the great preview!

Slightly encouraged by the weak sprint field. The opening stage should be a good opportunity for Abdul Halil but holding Zariff as a slight favorite due to his lead-out.

Other than that, this will be a difficult race for us. Have to hope for some breakaway action on the hillier stages!

Excited to see what we can do here. Should be an interesting race. Might not be able to get a big result but a top 10 would be the goal I think. Carlos might be able to do well an get some points in the U25 division.

Thanks for the preview!

Big race for us. With Gaviria being a total failure so far, Dunbar has been the bright light that is keeping our survival dreams alive. He’s raced a bit already, but still has a few RD’s up his sleeve and has really done an awesome job up against the EA duo so far. I don’t see that continuing here at all and think Wirtgen will win by a record margin, hopefully Dunbar can hang in there and aim for a place on the podium.

Our TTT setup is decent enough, but that EA lineup is really something else. Thanks for the preview, much appreciated Smile

This race Can go either Way for us. We have 3 riders who Can potentially fight for top 15 or better, but no stage favorites for any stage. Even the TTT is a bit of a cointoss as to whether we are a top 3 aspirant or not.

Fingers are crossed!

This is our big gamble this season! Sent Haig here after seeing last season's results and us having a decent TTT squad to help him. This race needs to go well otherwise we'll be looking at one more lost opportunity after the last day flop in Tirreno! Also hoping Zmorka can keep his form going in the ITT.

Thanks for the preview!

Conci to hopefully act as our leader here and he could really do with a big result to get our season going! Going to be tough in this field and with the strength of other TTT set-ups. I'd have to consider a Top 5 to be a very strong result. Fingers crossed Wink

Oh boy, those were absolutely devastating splits for the GC. I guess this will wreck havoc in the hilly stages. Should be interesting to see.

Would have liked to see Agrotis and Moutsios stay with the bunch, but we certainly can’t complain with the amount of luck We Got here.

Another random-ish top-10.

What a weird stage, Würtz and Haig losing lots of time is huge. Really odd splits, lucky that Firdaus managed to escape along with Dunbar.

Thanks for the report.

Disappointing to see Cosnefroy get caught out in the split but GC focus is on Conci (and Storer) who were both on the right side so not too much harm done to us.

Thanks for the nice preview, bbl! And thank you for kicking off the race with the nice report as well, Imladrik.

No big expectations whatsoever for us here, nice to see Ocampo still held on during the first stage and there is still a bit of hope to see if he could actually finish somewhere decent in GC.

Haig's race is over before it got started. Not sure Zmorka can hang on in the hilly stage. Missed Alben getting 2nd at first but that is a huge result for him! Not sure that makes up for the time losses elsewhere.

Congrats to Marco and thanks for the report!

Bjerg the leadout man. New role, but by doing this he remained ahead of the split so we might even start thinking about a GC again.

Then Kalaba finishes it off beautifully. I said two men looking for redemption, it did not take long to achieve it!

That was not the start I wanted…

Hope it gets better!

Thanks for the report

More of the same from Zariff, seems like the chase is draining his energy levels. Watch now as he does well in harder sprint fields where we don't do any work Pfft
