The choice of a mountainous course for this year’s Portuguese National Championshp sets up an interesting 3-way fight between Reis, Rodrigues and Almeida. None of them have any professional teammates to help, in fact the 13 professional riders are on 13 different teams.
11.5k to go and 17 of an original 22 rider break (all amateur) are still 46 seconds ahead so Rodrigues decides to attack.
Rodrigues rips through the beak followed by Guerreiro and Oliveira. Almeida bridging up with Reis a little further back.
Reis rides across to the leaders with 9k to go, Figueiredo, Barbio, and Oliveira go with him.
5k to go, attacks from first Almeida and then Ries get rid of both Oliveiras.
Figueiedo and Barbio are the next dropped. With 2.5k to go Rodrigues attacks again and Reis lets a little gap go.
1.7k, Reis makes it back to the other three and now looks the strongest.
800 meters, Reis accelerates.
Reis gets the jersey. Rodrigues is 2nd, Almeida 3rd.
