The fifth day of riding takes the 2024 Tour de l'Avenir across the Ardennes, dipping in and out of Belgium before ending near the border with Luxembourg. The finish in Longwy is an explosive one that should serve up a contest between the puncheurs and the more resilient sprinters. The Côte de Pulventeux (800m @ 10.9%) offers the penultimate challenge before the line; its steep slopes offer up an opportunity to a rider looking to make an early move. Otherwise things will have to be determined on the finish in Longwy (2.0km @ 5.6%). That gradient is quite deceiving though, with the toughest stretch leveling off right under the flamme rouge.

The breakaway has a lot less to play for on a day like today. There are only eight riders in the whole peloton who could become the interim King of the Mountains today and, for most of them, that would also require taking the stage win. That isn't a completely nil possibility given there are several riders who are no longer threats to the general classification, but the long stretches of flat road between Saint-Laurent and Côte de Montigny-sur-Chiers shouldn't make it too difficult for the sprinters' teams. With no real threats to the overall, managing the leash was more a concern for those teams that were hoping to take the stage win. Well, here it is, the final climb in Longwy. You can see just how much things level off as we approach the finish but, having just powered up the preceding slope, I'm not sure how many reserves are left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/snz.png SIMMONS initially seems to be the strongest, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/elc.png Edoardo ZAMBANINI also fighting his way forwards. Something tells me this will be the last one though, somehow can't see him surviving the climb to Hautacam.
