The riders have flown back northward for the start of this one, which will again see them traipsing through flat French countryside to the outskirts of the Massif Central. The stage is of a very similar length to yesterday, even. The only real difference of note is the location of today's singular Mountain classification contest. The riders face an extraordinarily difficult 3.1km @ 2.5% on the Côte de la Fontaine, a slope apparently worthy of a third category classification. Although it is significantly closer to the finish than yesterday's obstacle, it will take a very brave rider to try and go solo from 18 kilometres out.

It might not impact the stage victory, but the little bump which straddles the départements of Vienne and Charente still made the start of this race interesting. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gct.png Erik Nygaard MADSEN is wearing the pois rouges today but enough points are on offer for him to be usurped. This meant that there was a lot of contestation for the breakaway, with a plethora of riders looking to get away - including the classification leader. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/brc.png Jago WILLEMS and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png Olav KOOIJ had no interest in letting a large group up the road, so there were nigh on 40 kilometres of intensity before we finally got a breakaway established.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/Others/Avenir/S3/02.jpg

These were the riders who constituted that final selection. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/nfz.png Ivo DOMGJONI, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/t3a.png Gian Carlos HERNANDEZ MORAN, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/min.png Enzo PALENI, i.imgur.com/QRME53T.png Rasmus SOJBERG PEDERSEN and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbc.png Lluci De MARIGNY-LAGESSE. None of them are anywhere near challenging for the overall lead, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbc.png De MARIGNY-LAGESSE still ¼ of a minute down despite taking out both intermediate sprints.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/Others/Avenir/S3/03.jpg

The live television coverage starts just in time to watch the escapees tackle the Côte de la Fontaine. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/nfz.png Ivo DOMGJONI followed pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbc.png De MARIGNY-LAGESSE off the front a few minutes earlier, but the combined efforts of their chasers brought them back at the base of the climb. i.imgur.com/QRME53T.png SOJBERG tries to acquire a gap on the early slopes, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/t3a.png HERNANDEZ MORAN not only holds on to his wheel but also comes flying past him to secure the polkadot jersey. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/nfz.png DOMGJONI knows the peloton is less than a minute behind so, as everyone else looks to relax after a trying climb, he goes on the offensive.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/Others/Avenir/S3/04.jpg

It was a brave effort, not only from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/nfz.png DOMGJONI but from everyone in the morning breakaway. Unfortunately it just wasn't to be. The directeur sportifs from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/brc.png Bralirwa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png Zalgiris correctly calculated the numbers they were capable of controlling. What they still have yet to sort out, however, a pace that their leadout trains can sustain all the way into the line. Having maintained a solid tempo throughout much of the closing kilometres, the pace has dropped off alongside pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/brc.png Jean Eric HABIMANA with more than 2000 metres remaining.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/Others/Avenir/S3/05.jpg

Well, after a bit of freewheeling we are finally off! It is very difficult to tell who went first, there were a lot of nervous glances being thrown over shoulders and then they all seemed to spring into action as though a singular organism had come to life. Maybe it was pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sfi.png Esow ALBEN moving up from further back or maybe pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/brc.png WILLEMS decided he could power all the way to the line from this point. What matters is that the latter is leading; with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kmm.png Tim Torn TEUTENBERG, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gct.png Lucas BOURGOYNE and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/esk.png Thomas SILVA being joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sfi.png ALBEN behind him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png KOOIJ is slow to react and falls a few bikelengths back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/Others/Avenir/S3/06.jpg

The only (young) man capable of matching the explosiveness of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/brc.png WILLEMS was pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/esk.png SILVA. Just like yesterday, the Belgian drew a small group clear of everyone else (although this time the group consisted of just one other member). Just like yesterday; nobody in that group could assail the Belgian wunderkind's lead. That is two for two! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/twm.png Albin STALBERG rounds out the podium with a solid acceleration; whilst pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png KOOIJ can only managed 6th, having been boxed in.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/Others/Avenir/S3/07.jpg

That win moves pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/brc.png WILLEMS into the lead of both the overall and points classifications. He has a very good chance of holding on to the latter of those for the rest of the race, but it would be something of a surprise if he is in the maillot jaune come tomorrow night. The peloton will finally get to enter the Massif Central on the next stage; it is one where a rider can lose their race for the overall victory, even if they can't yet win it.
