Stage 3 Report

Stage 3 marks the beginning of the GC battle, the punchiest of the 3 climbing stages features 132k and numerous bumps along the way.

Given that profile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eko.png Paret-Peintre, seems like a logical name to top the favorites list.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S3/favs.jpg

16k gone and approaching the first Cat 4 the break has 5 riders and a 2’33 lead. They are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/taf.png Kaislavuo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png Ruiz (16 KOM pts, 5th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Varga (13, 6th), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ghn.png Evangelos (20, 4th), and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/t3a.png Vanderpool. With just 10 points between Evagelos and KOM leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/esk.png Erdenesuren we will get a new KOM leader today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S3/01.jpg

Varga takes the points. Evangelos just holds on to second ahead of Ruiz.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S3/02.jpg

Varga also wins the first sprint with Evangelos second, if they stay with the peloton to the end either could take the GC lead at the 2nd sprint (with the time gap they are easily in the virtual GC lead right now). The lone Cat 2 comes next, Wainstalls Hil, 2.2k at 9.3%

Kaislavuo takes the 10 points, 8 for Varga, 6 for Ruiz, 4 for Evangelos and 2 for Vandepool. Evangelos on 27, Varga 26, neither quite in the virtual KOM jersey yet. Peloton keeping the leash short, the gap is 2’39 now and hasn’t been over 3’40.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S3/03.jpg

Varga takes 6 more seconds at the second sprint. Kaislavuo 2nd and Evangelos is 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S3/04.jpg

The next climb is one of two Cat 3’s in quick succession. Varga wins it ahead of Kaisaluvo. The Popo man leads the KOM competition. Peloton at 2’41 with ISA-Hexacta on the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S3/05.jpg

The second Cat 3 includes some cobbles. Kaislavuo wins it ahead of Evangelos (31) and Varga (34).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S3/06.jpg

55k to go. Vandepool was dropped on the last climb and looks unable to rejoin. Peloton at 3’01 with splits beginning to form.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S3/07.jpg

Ruiz is dropped soon after.

Next categorized climb is a Cat 4, Evangelos (36) takes it ahead of Varga (37) and Kaislavuo (21) but they all look exhausted, 95-rider peloton at 2’36. 48k to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S3/08.jpg

40k to go for the peloton, gap down to 1’18. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/isa.png Contreras leading the peloton. Peloton at 151 riders again but has been splitting and reforming. One rider definitely dropped is the Yellow Jersey, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zoi.png Minali, who is in one of the groups further back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S3/09.jpg

The break just hangs on to the next Cat 3 and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/taf.png Kaislavuo takes 6 points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ghn.png Evangelos just beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Varga which will give Greek rider the KOM lead (40-39). From here there is only one more categorized climb, Anley Top, 3.4k at 5.2%. It peaks just 6k from the finish. But in between it is an almost constant series of small bumps.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S3/10.jpg

ISA-Hexacta are massed on the front as the break is over with 28k to go. 124 riders in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S3/11.jpg

The Troper Lane climb causes the first selective split with 33 riders ahead. Near the front of the second group are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ino.png Bagioli, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png Meurisse, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eko.png Oliveira. Although pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eko.png Paret-Peintre is in the front group. The climbs are thick through this section with the peloton now on Beacon Hill (1k at 5.7%).

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S3/12.jpg

14k to go. The front group is down to 27 and on Bank Top (1k at 9.6%), there lead is 32 seconds. From there it is a downhill and then the Anley Top. Meurisse trying to close the gap along with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/taf.png Dyrnes and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/taf.png Gebremedhin. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/min.png Kinoshita and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png Sagan also in the second group although their teams have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/min.png Vosekalns and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png Kwiatkowski up front. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/taf.png Ackermann, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/trg.png Demare and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kmm.png Zabel are all still in the front group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S3/13.jpg

Over Bank Top a new group of 39 is formed with all the names mentioned included, except Olivera. On Anley Top pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sfi.png Benoot puts in the first attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S3/14.jpg

About 600 meters from the top Benoot is shut down with the groups stretched, a small gap after the front 12 (in front of Ackermann, in German NC jersey)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S3/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tir.png Arndt attacks over the top with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spr.png Azman chasing on the front of a 21-rider group. Dyrnes and Zabel among those dropped. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/bbc.png Powless also in the dropped group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S3/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/taf.png Gebremedhin also dropped and Bagioli right at the back as they hit the descent. Arndt is unable to get away.

With 3k to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mck.png Sosa attacks, the Colombian not really known as a demon descender.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S3/17.jpg

A 19-rider group reaches the 1k banner with Sosa doing the lead out. Bagioli has been gapped. Right behind Sosa are Andt, Azman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eve.png Stannard, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/brc.png Tesfatsion.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S3/18.jpg

500 meters. Arndt and Tesfatsion on the front. Demare leading the second group in the picture but has a lot of ground to make up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S3/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/brc.png Tesfatsion wins Stage 3. Then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tir.png Arndt and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eve.png Stannard. Another great result for JEWA.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S3/20.jpg

The next 3 are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spr.png Azman, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/trg.png Demare, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/taf.png Ackermann.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S3/21.jpg

Its very close among the next group, the order is: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/zal.png Kwiatkowski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png Meurisse, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/isa.png Van Niekerk and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/sfi.png Benoot.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Reports/C1/Britain/S3/22.jpg

Demare takes over the GC lead on countback from Tesfatsion. But the last two stages include a lot of longer climbs so Demare will be tested. The Bagioli group loses 42 seconds, it looks like they are out of the GC leaving 19 riders in the battle.

Demare also leads the points. Tesfatsion is U25 leader and Minions lead the team’s competition being the only one with 3 riders in the front two groups.
