Stage 2 is for the sprinters, though the field is not that strong, so maybe the break will have a chance today.
Only three riders were allowed to get away today: Loland, Thompson and Theorpanous.
The first intermediate sprint isn’t contested. The gap to the peloton is a very controllable 2’39.
At the last sprint the gap is down to 1’36. It’s 31 km to go.
The break is caught with 7.5 km to go.
With 3 km to go there’s a train set up for Van Asbroeck.
He still has his leadout in front under the kite.
With 500 m to go Van Asbroeck has launched his sprint and is in the lead. Reinhardt is closing in though. Tivani, Consonni, Zhao and Willems are also in the mix.
But in the end it’s an easy win for Van Asbroeck! Zhao beats Consonni for 2nd place. Willems and Tivani finish in 4th and 5th. Reinhardt faded in the end and gets 6th place.
Touze, Bush, Peng and Van der Sande complete the top 10.
Congratulations to Van Asbroeck who made perfect use of his sprint train!
