Stage 2 Report

Stage 2 is the first of the three sprint stages here in Gabon. A big day for the KOM with two Cat 2 climbs plus a Cat 4. That is most of the points available in the race. The stage will finish in Koulamaoutou after 160k, there are also 3 sprint points along the way.

The initial break of 5 is shut down after about 10k. A second attempt with 6 riders suffers the same fate and as the peloton hits the first Cat 2 (9.4k at 3.2%) there is a new attempt with three riders. With 5k to climb and 142k in the stage the lead is 1’55. There are three sprint points and 18 seconds available on the course but the closest on GC of these is Van der Haar at 19 seconds so the yellow jersey is not in play for the break.

De Lie will be sprinting on a bigger stage than an Amissa Bongo sprint point in the future, but you have to start somewhere. He beats Murillo for maximum points. Revelo about 25 seconds back the peloton at 3’45. 123k to go.

De Lie (11) does some nice sprinting to take maximum points at the Cat 4 climb. Van de Haar (13) second. Then Murillo (5). Revelo has stalled and is now 53 seconds back. Peloton at 4’59.

De Lie makes it 3 in a row by winning the next sprint point with 93k to go. Peloton at 4’19. They’ll start the second Cat 2 in a few k.

Van der Haar proves to be the least bad climber in the group and takes 10 more points. He is on 23 and will wear the KOM jersey tomorrow. De Lie second on the climb and in the standings on 19. Revelo back in the peloton which is at 4’07. Stichinava took 3rd and is on 14 points.

The last sprint comes as they descend out of the highlands. Stichinava takes it. Lead down to 2’45 with 53k to go.
