Stage 4 is the time trial. Just 13.7k this year, the first 6k is pretty much entirely cobbled, the second half is not. The time check comes at the end of the final cobbled sector.
The organizers think it is TT skills that will matter.
Overview
38 riders either finished in the main chase group yesterday or ahead of it. That includes most of the favorites so we will cover them together. The remaining riders are split into two groups of 73. The top pure TTers are mostly in this first group.
Recap
Hofer was the first man on the course and set the best early time, 15’27.
Tiller was the first cobbler to go, he lost only 4 seconds to Hofer in the first 6k but lost another 14 seconds in the last 8k. He had the 3rd best time when he finished, with Aguilar Mendez in 2nd.
Razumov matched Hofer in the first section but gained 12 seconds in the second section to take over the hot seat. Zakarin then went 1 second better than his teammate to bump him down to second.
Forssell set the best time at the time check but couldn’t hold it to the finish and ended up in 3rd, 9 seconds down.
Atkins broke the Tinkoff dominance going 1 second faster than Zakarin.
Van Niekerk set a new best time at the split but faded and ended up in 5th, 4 seconds down. Groselj did the same thing, best time at the time check, 5th at the finish.
Munton matched Zakarin’s time but took over 2nd on the leader board.
Lammertink put a decisive end to Atkin’s days on the hot seat coming home 5 seconds faster.
----
The riders face cobbles right from the start, Austrian champion Hofer was first man on the course.

Standings with 73 Riders Finished
Overview
This group includes riders who will have been disappointed to lose extra time yesterday.
Recap
Brunel was the first rider from this group to crack the top 10, and he did very well, taking over 2nd place, 4 seconds down.
Cavagna lost over 6 minutes yesterday, which seems worse after he finished today only 4 seconds slower than Lammertink and took over 2nd.
Higuita lost 1’05. Ardila 46 seconds and Romo 55 seconds. Altur, the first top cobbler to go, lost 54 seconds.
Eekhoff was the last significant time, he lost just 7 seconds (7th) which also gave him the virtual GC before we move to the riders who were in the main chase group yesterday.

Cavagna on a better day.

Standings with 146 Riders Finished
Overview
Nearly all the favorites are in this group. All but the final 7 start the day 3’22 off the GC lead and probably only Pedersen, starting 2nd to last, is a threat to Gerts’ GC lead.
Recap
One of the first riders in this group was also one of the stage favorites, Anderberg. He set the best time at the time check by 3 seconds and just held on to lead Lammertink by fractions at the finish. That also made him the virtual GC leader.
Lampawog put up the next good time finishing 2 seconds off the pace, good enough for 3rd on the stage.
Wisniowski was only 1 second off the lead at the check but ended up 6 seconds down (7th).
Malecki lost 26 seconds. De Bie 31 seconds.
Van Baarle was the first of the all-rounders to go, he took over 3rd, 2 seconds off the pace.
Right behind him the defending champion, Cosnefroy, he went fractions better to take the last podium spot from Van Baarle.
But right behind him Wirtgen proved that he can handle any kind of TT course by smashing the best time by 13 seconds.
Kung took over 6th, 16 seconds down.
Polanc lost 35 seconds. Schmid 55. Aleotti 35. Vansevenant 52.
Pidcock secured the White Jersey outright going 33 seconds slower than Wirtgen but 2 seconds faster than Aleotti.
Spengler and Teunissen both started the day with a few seconds advantage on Wirtgen but lost well over a minute to fall behind him and others in the virtual GC. Their GC positions will be further under threat in the hills.
Philipsen limited his losses to 55 seconds but he only started the day with an extra 20 seconds so he too falls back.
Senechal was the first to go with a more substantial gap, 1’10 on Wirtgen. He lost 57 seconds to take over the virtual GC.
But he was immediately replaced by Per (+0’30 on Wirtgen) and then Pedersen (+0’40).
Pedersen’s time meant that Gerts just needed to finish within 1’09 of Wirtgen to keep the GC lead. He did that easily, losing 45 seconds to Wirtgen and conceding just 5 seconds of his race lead to Pedersen. He keeps a healthy 2’37 on Wirtgen.
Time trial master Tom Wirtgen wins stage 4. In the final standing Lammertink is moved ahead of Anderberg and into 2nd. Van Baarle is also moved ahead of Cosnefroy
Philipsen retains the points lead. Grieg the team’s jersey.
