Stage 5 Report

Stage 5 is the second GC stage in the race, a 20k flat team time-trial in Nelson. The top of the GC is not much in question as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/elc.png Giannoutsos has over a 1-minute lead and also rides for the TTT-favorites ELCO. Third place pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tlt.png Primozic also has strong backing in the TTT but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/snz.png Bennett, in 2nd, must be worried.

Gjensidige are first on the course, they don’t really have any GC players here nor their top TT guys, so we won’t expect much from them.

Next is Euskadi, they were here for the sprints, not the GC, so not much expected from them either.

The Turtles were always an outsider for a GC run and their best man is in 44th but they are one of the contenders for this stage and they set the best time at the intermediate, 11’25, 33 seconds up on Babymetal, 40 on Euskadi and 55 on Gjensidige.

Duvel-Tsingtao are next at the intermediate. They lose 35 seconds. They don’t have a GC contender either.

Team Würth MODYF thought they had a GC contender but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/twm.png Vanhoucke struggled under the ELCO blitz on Stage 3 and is only 25th. They lose 10 seconds to the Turtles at the intermediate.

The Turtles set the best time at the finish, 21’29. Team Würth are 11 seconds slower all the rest more than 1 minute back.

Glanbia were also here mainly for the TTT and a little for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/gla.png Main. He went for the break on the mountain stage and it didn’t work out. In the TTT they finish 9 seconds down on the Turtles, 2nd for now.

Genii are down to 5 riders with 2.5k to go but this stage is gravy for them with KHJ already taking the points jersey, a stage win and 3rd in the KOM.

They finish the TTT 42 seconds down on SEE Turtles.

1.5k to go for Spark, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/snz.png Bennett, in the KOM jersey, just losing touch with the leaders, he also needs pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/snz.png Welsford or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/snz.png Thompson to stay with him. They were 25 seconds down at the time check.

They keep it together reasonably well and finish 55 seconds down although Bennett loses 2 additional seconds. Bennett started the day with 30 seconds over 6th place.

Ethiopian Airlines finish with a big split between their front 4 and next 3 which include GC leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eth.png Chamorro (16th to start the day). They lose 1’04.

Manada, to their chagrin, have nobody in the top 20 on GC. They have dropped one of their GC men, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mcy.png Rivera with 2k to ride. They lose 51 seconds.

Everesting come to the finish with 7 riders still in the picture including their leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eve.png Rachid. They lose 28 seconds, 6th so far.

With 2.4k to go Popo4ever only have 4 riders left. That is bad news for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/p4e.png Vasyliv who started the day in 11th. They lose 1’08 mostly while waiting for their 5th rider. Vasyliv will drop down the standings.

Kraftwerk are much more in harmony, leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/kmm.png Evans on the front. They lose 14 seconds (5th). Evans should hold on to his top 10.

All 8 men together as Trans cross the line. They lose 15 seconds, 6th place. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tlt.png Primozic holds his 3rd place for now, moving ahead of Bennett but dropping behind Powless (by 2 seconds). Still a great race for the CT man.

Sauber begins to lose cohesion with 2k to ride. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spr.png Misbah (8th on GC) leading the first group but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spr.png Frankiny (6th) in the third group.

In the end their 5th man, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spr.png Einhorn, holds back the first group and Misbah loses 1 minute. Frankiny loses another 5 seconds.

No such trouble for the favorites, they are all together at the 1k banner. Although their split time was 6 seconds slower than the Turtles.

The almost make it up, finishing on the same time as the Turtles but the fractions go to the Ecuadorians.

A great win for the SEE Turtles and a great stage for the CT teams as they take 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 8th. CT teams also take 3rd and 5th in the GC and Trans put 3 riders in the top 15 another great C1 points race for them.

Although if they are being greedy a few more seconds in the TTT would have been nice. Obviously, they also win the team’s jersey. Sauber are 2nd in that but drop to 8th and 9th on GC.

Quinn wins the Young Rider jersey and KHJ is the points winner, making it an even bigger race for the CT.
