Tour de France
An unusual stage today – just 64k but almost all climbing. It is the Col de Val Louron-Azet (Cat 1), followed by the Peyresourde (Cat 1) and finishing at Luchon-Superbagnéres (HC). There is a sprint point between the last two climbs. Moser controlled things well yesterday, today is a different kind of stage. There was a similar stage to this in 2018 where Simon Spilak launched a long range attack and the stage was won from the break by a young Pierre-Henri Lecuisinier
Again PHL and Kudus top the favorites.
The climbing starts almost immediately as within 5k the riders are on to the Col de Val Louron-Azet (8.2k at 7.6%). Some big names going in the break, this first group includes Warchol (23rd on GC, +17’37), Cras (14th, +14’29, 30 KOM pts), Burke (25th, +18’00, 26 KOM pts), and Hänninen (116th, +55’27)
2.6k to climb for group 2 on the road. So far the front 4 are setting a hard pace and the gap to this group has been going out. There is already 4’50 between the front of the race and the peloton. There is one more escape group behind these 7 with another 5 riders. In this 7 are Lopez Nolasco, Pinot, O'Connor, Rodriguez, Schelling, Mamykin, and Rohendi. Lopez Nolasco in 18th on GC is the best placed in this group (+16’10). Rohendi is 5th in the KOM on 56 points with Pinot 11th on 30.
Cras edges Burke for the KOM points, Warchol sat the contest out, he is focused on the stage. They are 5’45 up on the peloton and 1’39 up on the first chase group.
The peloton crosses the top 7’28 down with all of Moser on the front.
The front group are back together as they hit the Peyresourde (7.9k at 7.7%). They have 1’19 on the chase group and 7’26 on the peloton, which is splitting on the descent. Just 39k left in the stage.
A quick shout out to the 3rd group of escapees who look unlikely to ever reach the front – they include Elissonde, Ries, Andriafenomananiaina, Harper, and Lapeira.
Just under 2k to climb, Hänninen was a litte out of his depth in the front group and he has been dropped. The 2nd group on the road might not ever reach the front either, they are 2’12 down now. Peloton at 7’18, a handful of riders off the back.
Burke puts in a little kick the other two can’t match and takes the mountain points on the Peyresourde. Warchol 2nd, Cras 3rd. 140 rider peloton at 7’33, still 6 Moser domestiques on the front.
Behind Rohendi takes enough points to move into 3rd on the virtual KOM, 1 point ahead of Hamza but 27 points behind Johannessen. Cras (56) and Burke (54) are up to 6th and 7th.
Neuman leads the peloton over the climb 7’11 down.
The front 3 roll through the sprint point with a lead of 1’45 over the chase group and 6’40 on the peloton. The final climb starts in 1k and it is 16k at an average of 7.2%. This stage could still go to the GC riders.
A split on the descent sees Kirsch, 16th on GC, caught behind, seems like he might be setting up for an attack in the future. The entire Moser team is in front of Kudus as they start the final climb, 6’16 behind the leaders. There are 63 riders in the peloton.
10k to climb for the leaders, the 7 chasers are back to within 1’21. Hänninen has been dropped from that group. Peloton at 6’05. The show of force from Moser seems to be discouraging attacks.
They have to be happy in the Moser car, just 11k left in this dangerous stage and they boys are looking good.
5.9k to climb and we finally have some action as Cras attacks his companions. The chase group still 1’14 back. Peloton at 5’45, Moser keeping it under control without going that hard.
Cras’ attack does not do much except stretch the lead out a little. Rohendi is dropped from the 2nd group.
Warchol counters and immediately gets a gap.
Cras drops Burke as he works to claw back Warchol. MOL now setting the pace in the peloton, gap is 5’48. Only Hosek still with Kudus although other Moser riders are in the group.
2.4k for Warchol, he can see final meters ahead up the climb. He has 28 seconds on Cras and 5’42 on the peloton. O’Connor has been dropped from what was the 2nd group, the surviving 5 are within a minute of Burke.
At some point Kirsch made it back to the main group, although he is well back in that group.
With just under 4k to go, Haig attacks after Brozyna sets him up. Lecuisinier follows.
Kudus quickly catches Lecuisinier and sets out after Haig. Faglum Karlsson on his wheel.
Meanwhile, among the fans up front, Cras has caught Warchol. Burke 1’10 behind now with the chase group almost on him. Lopez Nolasco has been driving that group.
Kudus gaps Faglum Karlsson and Lecuisinier and is within 10 seconds of Haig. Further back Padun is trying to bridge up solo while Habtemichael leads Pogacar and the rest of the peloton. They are about 40 seconds down on Haig.
Haig and Kudus are with one of the breakaway remants. They have 20 seconds on Lecuisinier, Faglum Karlsson and Padun. Another 19 seconds back is a group with most of the other main GC contenders except McNulty, who has missed out again, and Shikai. McNulty is leading the next group another 27 seconds behind. Yesterday’s big winners, Mas and Johannessen are also in the McNulty/Shikai group.
Cras and Warchol start the sprint with 700 meters to go. Cras lost a sprint yesterday and he isn’t the favorite today either. A brave ride by him to get back to Warchol’s wheel might deserve better. Behind the GC groups might be coming together. McNulty is getting help from Rubio but still has a gap to close.
Cras will do one spot better than yesterday but have to settle for 2nd, he could never quite close and Warchol pulled away in the last 100 meters. Warchol wins Stage 13, from the moment he got in the break he was the favorite. Lopez Nolasco has dropped the others and is looking good for 3rd on the stage.
1.4k to climb for the GC leaders. Kudus and Haig have 18 seconds on Lecuisinier and 41 seconds on a very stretched 50-rider group with all the other GC riders. Rubio has pulled McNulty and Shikai back into a better position. Johannessen looks in the most trouble as he is much further back in the group.
Lopez Nolasco takes 3rd. Mamykin edges Burke for 4th. Schelling will be 6th to make it a nice day for Fastned.
900 meters, Kudus and Haig side-by-side, Leuisinier still 14 seconds back. Next group on the road is down to 18 but includes all the top GC guys except Johannessen.
Pinot takes 7th ahead of Rodriguez. O'Connor is about to be caught by Kudus and Haig meaning all the rest of the breakaway riders are caught.
200 meters. Kudus and Haig still side by side with the latter having a slight edge. Lecuisinier holding the gap at 10 seconds. A 9 rider GC group has emerged behind. Mas and Shikai missing out.
Kudus just catches Haig on the line, 3’26 behind the winner. A great day for Moser and Kudus as they show no signs of weakness. Lecuisinier comes in 12 seconds down in 11th.
O'Connor takes 12th and Pogacar leads in the rest of the GC riders in 13th. That groups concedes 44 seconds to Haig and Kudus which puts the Australian back on the podium.
Johannessen loses another 51 seconds and drops to 9th on GC. Cras moves up to 7th. Despite the GC drop Johannessen retains both his jerseys, although his KOM lead is down to 25 points over Cras, 26 over Kudus and 27 over Rohendi. No change in the points competition, but Mamykin’s ride in the break move Tinkoff 1’22 ahead of MOL in the Team’s competition.
