Tour de France
After two hilly stages that turned into flat stages we have a hilly stage more worthy of the name. The riders cover 153k from Belfort to Porrentruy. The stage includes 5 Cat 2 climbs as well as a Cat 3 and Cat 4 and the usual single sprint point.
The big GC guns top the favorites board but with the final climb peaking 14k before the end the organizers also think there might be a small group sprint so they also have Madouas and Malecki among the favorites.
The peloton not interested in a big break today and with 13k gone all the attackers are brought back after work by Grosu. One of the active riders has been Stedman who knows he has to be in the break if he wants to hold the KOM jersey.
30k gone. Stedman cracks a few meters before the line on the first climb (the cat 4) and he is passed by Mansouri. These two plus Robeet have been out front for a while but continual attacks from the peloton mean their lead have only just going over 1’25. The hard pace has also put Robeet in trouble and he is 22 seconds down on Mansouri and Stedman.
Stedman does manage to take maximum points at the second climb (the Cat 3). Robeet was able to recover and rejoin the front, he takes second. Things have calmed down in the peloton and these three now have 2’44 with 117k to go. Still the 5 Cat 2 climbs to come.
Mansouri holds of Stedman at the first Cat 2. Behind the peloton is keeping the gap at around 3’25, mainly thanks to MOL (Stash and Morales Ortega)
Gladysh and Bester take the remaining KOM points. Stedman leads with 35, Mansouri already up to second with 21, then Bester with 17.
5k to the top of the second Cat 2 (7.9k at 6.0%) for the break. The peloton not messing around, they have the gap down to 1’25, Popo4ever (Bratashcuk, Sergis) working now. 82k in the stage.
Lopez Nolasco punctures, he will have some work to do to get back on, with the pace the peloton is going.
At the top Mansouri again holds off Stedman to take maximum points. Robeet gapped. Peloton at 1’24 with a handful of riders dropped. Lopez Nolasco close to rejoining.
Gladysh and Vader take the rest of the KOM points. Lopez Nolasco is able to rejoin. The peloton hesitates near the top and the lead goes back out but Carlsberg, EA and Gazelle are willing to work on the flats and descents so the gap quickly begins to shrink again.
The break hits next Cat 2 (5k at 7.3%) with a 1’46 lead.
Zumer sets a hard pace on the climb and with 2.2k to climb for the peloton the lead is down to 42 seconds. Robeet has been dropped again from the break.
300 meters to the top for Mansouri, Stedman and Robeet have been caught. Vader has attacked out of the peloton which is just 16 seconds back.
Mansouri just holds off the charging Vader at the top. Stedman finds a second wind to grab 3rd ahead of Gladysh.
Stedman still has the KOM lead with 49 to 41 for Mansouri and 20 for Vader and Gladysh. Over the top all the attackers are caught.
With the break caught all the points are available at the sprint point and Banaszek is best positioned and gets the jump on the rest to take the 10 points.
Van der Lijke, Kanter, Jakobsen, and Rajovic take the rest of the points.
No further action and the peloton reaches the penultimate Cat 2 with 184 riders and Grosu on the front. Rabobank riding for Champoussin today. This climb, the Côte de la Caquerelle (4.1k at 7.7%) is quickly followed by the final Cat 2 the Col de la Croix (3.8k at 8.6%). Once they summit that climb there is 14k to the finish.
Kudus must not be feeling good today, he is well back in the pack as they pass the 1k banner in the climb. By contrast Lecuisinier is 3rd wheel behind the two Popo4ever (Vasiyliv and Bratashcuk) riders setting the tempo.
Luckily for Kudus there are no attacks on the climb and the peloton hits the final climb still 179 strong.
With 2.7k to climb Vasyliv attacks. Sulvaran leading the peloton.
The attack goes nowhere. Sulvaran and Olesen setting the pace. Padun and Champoussin are the next to try.
With 800 meters to climb Padun is able to get a gap.
Padun goes over the top with a 24 second lead. Hoelgaard and Neuman leading the chase behind.
134 riders, including the Yellow Jersey, are still in the pack as they cross the top. Maybe it will be another sprint finish. They have to catch Padun first.
The catch is made by Kirsch with 6k to go. The descent has split the pack and there are only 35 riders up front. The Yellow Jersey and most of the other sprinters are well back but Groves is here. Faglum Karlsson has missed the split and is a few seconds down but the big GC names are all accounted for. Almeida is not here but he isn’t the team leader.
Champoussin launches an attack but that is shut down and the lead group hesitates. Faglum Karlsson has latched back on. 38 seconds back there is a group of 21, including Almeida and Hsu, trying to rejoin.
3k to go, Warchol leads another attack. The Almeida group has made it back minus Hsu and a few others. Groves doesn’t look to have much left and is right at the back of the group, so it seems like this will go to a non-sprinter.
Warchol’s attack draws 18 riders clear including all of the GC favorites. Malecki and Madouas both in the lead group. Behind the groups come together to form a 114-rider chase group. But that group doesn’t seem to have any momentum. Banaszek needs them to find some momentum if he is going to keep the jersey.
1.4k to go Champoussin on the move, Madouas next and then Pogacar
600 meters. Madouas has the lead over Champoussin. Malecki got himself caught behind some slower guys and won’t contest the win.
300 meters. Madouas with a clear lead. Pogacar and Kudus almost up to Champoussin. The Eritrean would love to take some bonus seconds. Sivakov also well placed.
Madouas celebrates, a perfect stage for him and he didn’t miss out. He may even get a gap. Champoussin has collapsed.
Sivakov with a late charge to grab second, Pogacar just holds off Kudus for 3rd. Then Inkelaar and Lecuisinier.
Then Malecki, Aular, Padun and McNulty.
Madouas doesn’t get a gap over the other riders in the front group but they do finish 58 seconds ahead of the main group. Which along with the time bonus is enough to make the Puma rider the new race leader by 1 second on Sivakov and 5 on Pogacar.
Banaszek will switch to the green jersey tomorrow. With the final climb KOM points split up Stedman will keep that jersey. Mansouri uses the stage to move up to 2nd, 8 points behind the leader.
With no young rider jersey eligible riders in the front group Firdaus holds that jersey. Only Gazelle put two riders in the front group but they were well down in the team’s standings so the lead stays with King Power.
