It’s the final day of the race and the GC seems pretty much settled, at least at the top. But the KoM competition is incredibly contested and close, so if the break is able to get to the three late cat. 1 climbs it could be a thriller there.

We have a huge break of 20 riders today, including some (but not all) KoM contesters. None of them is within 10 minutes of the GC lead, so we’ll focus on the KoM competition for now (points in brackets).

The first climb of today is the Col de l’Iseran and it’s a really long one. The break is on a plateau halfway up the climb and has already 18 km of climbing done, ‘only’ 20 km to the top from here. The peloton is 4’39 behind now.

10 km to climb and the gap is rather steady. But interestingly those teams having multiple riders in the break leave the work to those who are alone. So some of the good climbers out front could arrive at the late climbs rather fresh, so the stage win (and lots of KoM points) could be up for grabs for them.

We skip the next 80 km of more or less descending and are just in time to see the break enter the next climb (Col du Mollard; cat. 1; 5.8 km at 13.7 %). The peloton is 6’16 behind and there are only 35 km to go, but there are also 3 cat. 1 climbs ahead of the riders, so everything’s still possible.

At the front everyone but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/aab.png Kvist came back together for the next climb (La Combe Génin; cat. 1; 6.0 km at 8.0 %), but their lead to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/yor.png Morton is down to 3’36. And the GC leader has a gap of 1’43 to his 16 chasers. The entire GC top 10 is there.

Some more seconds behind is a group of 6. But more importantly the two leaders also seem to be the freshest riders.
