Hola y bienvenido al Vuelta a España! We start this year’s edition with a stage for the fast men – and we have quite some of the big names at the start here, trying to take the first maillot rojo. We also have an early solitary KoM sprint, so there should be some interest to get in the break today.

The first break of the race consists of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/lot.png Zana, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Frigo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ced.png Selimovic. The first KoM leader will come from this group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/lot.png Zana takes the 6 points at the KoM sprint and will wear the blue jersey tomorrow. A nice job from him to make his team’s wildcard worthwhile. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ced.png Selimovic finishes 2nd ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Frigo. The peloton is nearly 5 minutes behind, but with 147 km to go on nearly pan flat roads this shouldn’t be a problem for the sprinter teams.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ced.png Selimovic wins the first intermediate sprint in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/lot.png Zana and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/rab.png Frigo. Their gap went up to a maximum of 6’30 but is already down to 4 minutes with 100 km to go.

It’s the same order at the second intermediate sprint. If those three finish with the pack it will most probably also be the order in the U25 classification. The peloton is closing in fast though, with the gap down to 1’50 with still 60 km to go. The first smaller groups are already dropped, but no sprinters or GC riders are among those dropped.

The break is caught with 13 km to go. We have a complete peloton of 191 riders.

With 6 km to go the sprinter teams are still pushing. The work is mostly done by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/aab.png Assa Abloy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/akm.png Aker – MOT with an occasional turn taken by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mos.png Moser –Sygic.

With 2.3 km to go the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/mos.png Moser train has taken over. There are some splits further behind. Most of those riders won’t care, but especially pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tti.png Sivakov should bother to come back and not lose crucial time in a flat stage split.

And the Colombian favourite wins the first stage! The bunch closed in but didn’t get him in the end.
