GP Liechtenstein (PT) - Preview
While some climbers, including last year's winner Silvio Herklotz, are racing in Italy in the first GT of the season, most of the PT top climbers have come to Liechtenstein for the GP Liechtenstein. The true climbing classing of the highest MG division, and the profile looks as juicy as ever.
Yes, that is a lot of climbing. Let's have a look at the favourites.
| Nat. | Name | MO | HI | ST | RS | SP | AC | | Kudus Merhawi | 85 | 78 | 79 | 77 | 64 | 70 | | Lecuisinier Pierre-Henri | 85 | 75 | 78 | 80 | 67 | 74 | | Morton Lachlan | 84 | 76 | 79 | 78 | 57 | 67 | | Phinney Taylor | 83 | 75 | 74 | 71 | 70 | 72 | | Dombrowski Joseph | 83 | 74 | 79 | 77 | 59 | 74 | | Haig Jack | 83 | 74 | 76 | 75 | 61 | 73 | | Padun Mark | 82 | 77 | 72 | 74 | 60 | 75 | | Pogacar Tadej | 82 | 76 | 79 | 80 | 63 | 72 | | Bernal Egan | 82 | 74 | 80 | 80 | 67 | 69 | | Areruya Joseph | 81 | 81 | 76 | 78 | 68 | 76 | | McNulty Brandon | 81 | 74 | 75 | 77 | 64 | 68 | | Galta Fredrik Strand | 81 | 73 | 78 | 79 | 63 | 66 | | Reis Rafael | 81 | 73 | 78 | 76 | 50 | 64 | | Sivakov Pavel | 81 | 72 | 79 | 77 | 66 | 69 | | Aular Orluis | 81 | 72 | 76 | 75 | 63 | 69 | | Shikai Chen | 81 | 71 | 74 | 76 | 57 | 67 | | Lopez Miguel Angel | 80 | 84 | 76 | 74 | 66 | 78 | | Amezawa Takeaki | 80 | 77 | 76 | 78 | 68 | 75 | | Novak Domen | 80 | 77 | 74 | 76 | 66 | 76 | | Warchol Bartosz | 80 | 74 | 76 | 77 | 61 | 70 | | Inkelaar Kevin | 80 | 70 | 75 | 76 | 60 | 74 |
Kudus and Lecuisinier are the two top climbers present in Liechtenstein. Whereas the Frenchman has two wins in Liechtensteinian history, the Moser rider has none so far. Nevertheless, the Eritrean finished second here last year, and with Herklotz racing in Italy, this might be his year. Morton the favourite to finish on the final podium spot, and looking at his fourth place last year seems to confirm that.
The batch of 83 climbers is a bit bigger. 2022 winner Phinney is the best puncheur of the two, but cannot match the physical capacities of Haig, and even less those of his fellow American, racing for another Dutch team, Dombrowski. Speaking about punchy climbers, PCT wildcard Padun seems to be similar to Phinney, the Ukrainian was only thirteenth here last year nevertheless.
Two big talents who are no longer just talents on the list then. Paris - Nice winner Pogacar not only has a decent punch, but can hold on for very long as well with his stamina and resistance, and other superstar and generational frenemy Bernal is even stronger in that field. Also in Liechtenstein is the juan and only Areruya. One thing is certain, you don't want to go with the finish line with him, and while we're on the topic of hybrids, Lopez is also here to support Lecuisinier. Or will he have a free role?
The batch of 81 climbers will probably mostly be looking for a finish in the lower top-10, but with a great day you never know if even a top-5 finish is possible. Quite similar riders there, all with decent to good physical capacitites and nobody really with a great punch outside of the already mentioned Areruya. Two 80 climbers with a strong punch that will hope to beat those 81 climbers are Amezawa and Novak, although the former will act as a domestique as well probably.
Good luck to all, startlist in the spoiler. The race has been reported by the magnificent AbhishekLFC.

Need a top 10 here from Pogi, maybe if he's on a good day we can fight for a top 5 result.
Thanks for the preview

Just hoping most of our guys will finish and a top 50 for Cort
Should be a great fight for the win. My favourite: PHL.

Indeed. Don't know why this is, but it's even worse than last year. Looks like quite a lot of strong climbers came to PT this year - or were trained to be as good as they are now. And it confirms that the Giro has a rather weak startlist in terms of climbers (at least at the top).

Fully agree, just replacing Cort with Darbellay Really cannot expect more than a Top 30-40, and with some luck another rider in the Top 50. Breakaway appearance would be nice, too - and I hope that's almost guaranteed given that we're one of the weakest teams here.
Good luck to all, thanks for the preview!

Not much of a chance to do anything here given how stacked the field gets. We'll take Galta not being completely irrelevant and scoring something.
Thanks for the preview!

Lecuisinier is here so obviously i hope to win. Lopez is here as well to form the super duo. When i sent him, i hoped for a shorter list of second row riders so that he can ideally go for a top 10 result as well. Might be a bit tougher than expected and not sure how the ai will handle him. but worst case, he makes the race hard for Lecuisinier which is fine for me as well. Basically replaces some of those 3day races with a tt or MSR which obviously isnt won by puncheurs in the newer game versions...

Crazy field, which is super fun! PHL must be considered favourite. Novak I don't have much hope for here. Maaaybe a top 15, and possibly a top 10 on a super duper day? A top 20 feels normal
Curious to what kind of race it becomes. Would be fun if the greatest climbers go earlyish, eventhough it will then probably only come down to an attrition war, similar to what we saw on the cobbles in Franceville. |

Happy to see an active Chamloussin, but maybe it would have been a better idea to safe energy and try to hang to a top 20 spot.
So weird to see Lecuisinier not even on the podium.

We got the top 10, but otherwise it's another underwhelming race. This month can't end soon enough
Congrats to cycleYorkshire for a slightly surprising win and thanks to Abhi for the report

Great ride by Morton! Big congrats to cycleYorkshire on a little upset here.
We got what we came for. A guy in the break (though not for long), eight finishers and well inside the top 50 for Cort. Thanks for the report!

Ouch... Darbellay's bad season continues. No clue what his problem is, but finishing alongside Polanc, and far behind e.g. Champoussin or Cort as similarly skilled climbers is really disappointing. Points-wise, it's not that much of a loss, but his perspective to get further training funds clearly hasn't improved with today's outcome...
Congrats to ryant, pretty surprising to see him beat all of PHL, Dombrowski and Kudus, but that attack was perfectly timed!
Weird to see PHL miss out on the podium, though, definitely misjudged that attack and then spent too much energy to catch up.
Thanks for the report to Abhi and to Nemo for posting it!

Obviously I hoped for more than 14th from McNulty but it was nice to see him try an attack, even though that probably wasn't the best way to use his energy.
Congrats ryant on this victory against such strong opposition and thanks Abhi for the report! |

Ouch Lecuisinier. That was an awful result as THE standout favorite.

13th is around where Aular should be after holding on for as long as possible. Higuita with a top-20 is decent as well, seems like he did a good domestique job.
A bit of a surprising winner here, but still a clear podium favourite of course. Congratulations ryant! Thank you Abhishek for the great report

Morton was really on a heater here! I'm shocked as I just hoped for a podium with this start list and I have to be honest there's been few instances of Morton really impressing like this in the high mountains for us, normally just doing 'enough' rather than seriously challenging for wins (although that's normally been against the likes of Herklotz tbf).
Even so what a performance and what a win! Certainly gives me hope for the future...

Wow, big surprise! Congratulations, ryant!
Very surprised to see PHL on what must have been a bad day. For us, Novak doing just fine to get 15th. Not much more to say for us. And also, a race time of almost 8 hours and 30 minutes... The race is just crazy brutal |

Poor performance by Galta, but not gonna complain after our insane Giro luck. Gregaard with a nice top 30 makes up some of the difference at least. Thanks Abhi for the report, and congrats to ryant!

In this field, second is a great result by Dombrowski!
Congrats on the surprise win, ryant.
