The riders have made their way to Lithuania for a four day extravaganza featuring sprints, a TTT and the race-ending hilly stage. Today, they'll be going around the city of Kaunas, with a lot of KOM and sprint points on offer.
FL HI ST RS SP AC Grosu73 73 74 79 83 80 Ewan75 71 73 80 83 81 Cullaigh74 67 73 78 82 81 Enger73 69 71 77 81 78 Kanter75 67 75 77 81 80 Demare72 79 74 79 81 80 Abdul Halil70 60 71 77 81 79 Vesely73 68 74 76 81 80 Aniolkowski76 66 76 79 80 79 Hayakawa73 65 75 76 79 79
No one tried to get into the break in the opening kilometers. Finally Peden made the move a couple of kilometers before the first KOM summit. Ben Ameur tries to catch up at a distance.
Peden does win the first KOM. Ben Ameur is 2nd. Van Den Berg takes 3rd from the pack.
The front two eventually form the break of the day.
Ben Ameur turns it around in the second KOM to take maximum points ahead of Peden. Medvedev takes the single point.
Medvedev continues his momentum, taking Ruiz and Noia with him. All three make it to the break eventually with 142 km to go.
Ruiz wins the first intermediate sprint ahead of Medvedev and Ben Ameur. They lead by 5'43".
Noia wins the second intermediate sprint, followed by Ruiz and Medvedev.
Medvedev wins the third KOM sprint. He is followed by Ruiz and Ben Ameur.
Ruiz gets the win on the next KOM. He is followed by Medvedev and Noia.
Noia wins the third intermediate sprint. Medvedev is 2nd, followed by Ben Ameur.
Behind them, there have been a a lot of splits in the pack, but most of them have reformed again.
Peden is dropped from the break with 28 km to go.
The first proper split happens in the pack, with more than a 100 riders in the later group.
Ruiz wins the fifth KOM, taking the lead in the standings. Ben Ameur is 2nd with Medvedev next.
Peden has been caught by the pack.
More consequently in terms of the GC, Phinney is among the riders now dropped from the pack! Harrison is the only strong sprinter in this group. Madouas is another big name here.
81 riders remain in the pack.
The break is caught with 14 km to go.
The gap is increasing to the Phinney group! 10 km to go.
Jumping ahead to the final 2 kilometers - the front of the pack is completely disorganized with Rabobank the only team trying to get some semblance of sanity in place for their sprinter.
It doesn't quite work out though as Grosu is released into the wind with 900 meters to go. Vesely is on his tail.
Enger is closing in. 500 meters to go. Ewan, Aniolkowski, Hayakawa and Culaigh are in the next row.
It's still Grosu vs Vesely for the win with 200 meters to go.
100 meters to go and the situation at the front remains the same. Who'll take out the win?
It's so close!! Ewan stormed to the line, while Grosu just faded a little, and is confirmed as third. But is it Ewan or Vesely for the win??
Aniolkowski is 4th, followed by Cullaigh and Enger.
Demare, Abdul Halil, Vermeersch and Norbert complete the Top 10.
Today's winner - Caleb Ewan.
The judges give the win to Ewan. Judge for yourselves from that photo-finish!! Vesely has to be content with 2nd. They are also in the same positions in the Points standings. Ruiz leads the KOM standings (apologies for completely missing the last KOM of the day). Vermeersch leads the U25s with cycleYorkshire leading the Teams classification.
