Volta a Portugal
Stage 7
23.8km Time Trial
Phinney is the clear favorite here as he looks to take over the GC lead ahead of stage 8. Expect lots of GC separation today, especially as a significant number of riders have stayed tightly together so far.
Rekita is the 6th rider off the start ramp likely a top 5 competitor for today. 12:03 at the only time-check to set the first major best time there. 29:01 is the time at the finish! That’s 1:32 over all the other riders to start first, not that they were expecting any good results.
Haugard is next off the ramp so it’ll be two of the first riders comparing best times in order to set the daily standard. 12:04 puts Haugard 1 second back at the mid-way point. Still very much a possibility to overtake Rekita’s finishing time. This finishing time will set the standard for what to expect on the day. 29:07 means that Haugard slots into 2nd! We expect to see these two times near the top for a while.
Norsgaard is the next major competitor to head off the start line. The mid-way time is 0:01 back at 12:04 so he still has a shot at the finish! Can he pull an upset? He seems to be taking the hill sections best of the three tracked so far. 28:57! A new best time for the Tryg-Eni rider. His strength on the kickers shows that some punch will be crucial today.
Daniel has shown himself off in the breakaways for McCormick and should put together a good result. He’s not quite as strong on the flat but punches better than Norsgaard. At the intermediate, he’s 7 seconds back of Rekita, but could make up time here. Not a new best time, but 29:01 puts him into 3rd place! Strength on the hills will matter today.
Noia is another TT specialist going off early. He’s 3 seconds back at the intermediate – 12:06. Unlikely for him to find the extra seconds, but surely a good time for the San Marino resident. 29:10 for Noia, still good for 5th so far.
After a long wait until the 61st first best on GC, Cabrera is finally able to make a difference in the top 3 times. Cabrera finishes in 29:01 for McCormick showing that there are definitely good times still to come.
A few riders ahead, Ludvigsson had set the a new 5th best time – pushed down now at 29:10, while Uwizeyimana, Hadi, and Rachid all set up in the top 10 around 20 seconds back.
Plapp is another rider prepped for a great result and we catch him just crossing the finish line. A new 5th place time at 29:05 for the young Australian.
Rikunov is one of the first competitors to notably pass the rider ahead of them and finished 9th at 18 seconds back for now. Should move him up for sure, with opportunities to top 20 tomorrow as well if he can get priority.
Godoy sits 29th on GC(+:43) heading into the day and is not the best time trialist of the GC favorites. He is trying to limit losses, but already gives up 40 seconds at the intermediate. At the finish, it’s 1:14 down for him to Norsgaard – he’ll need a huge day tomorrow.
Warchol sits at 28th and on the same time as Godoy. He will struggle today as well and loses identically at the intermediate. At the finish, it’s 1:17 down. He’ll need a very selective stage 8.
Johannessen is pushing the pace better than some of the earlier GC rivals but is still 0:29 down at the intermediate. At the finish, it’s 0:50 down at 29:47. He entered the day back 0:38 and should expect a 1:40 deficit tomorrow. Barguil follows through just a few seconds worse at 29:55.
Galta is 21st (0:34) heading into the day but a good TTer and way better climber. At the intermediate he only loses 19 seconds to the leader and is showcasing why he won last year. 17th and 0:27 back for Galta at the finish! A good day for the Norwegian!
Yates is right behind in 20th GC position (also 0:34). 26 seconds lost mid-way means more losses to recoup tomorrow. 41 seconds lost at the finish line for a 29:38 slot is more than respectable for the McCormick climber.
Almeida is the next standout climber on the course and is 0:30 seconds back entering the day in 16th GC position. 18 seconds given away mid-way and less given away at the finishing sector. Only 0:28 back keeps him ahead of Galta for now and into the GC lead.
Eastman is the most important rider to come through yet as the biggest challenger to Phinney. He’s 13th in GC (0:29) and setting a torrid tempo on the early sector. Only 6 seconds back of Rekita means that he could challenge the stage lead. NEW LEADER! 28:54 lets the best time of the day! We’ll see how long he can hold the stage and GC lead.
Rodrigues started the day at 9th in the standings (0:27). He’s 25 seconds back at the intermediate split, but that’s to Phinney who has just set a new time. His finish will be compared to Eastman. His finish is 29:14, good for 11th at the time and 20 seconds back. Eastman keeps the GC lead.
Misbah was missed here, but finishes 17 seconds back as another top GC rider so far. He’s currently 10th and started the day in 10th on GC. Should be positioned for a potential top 5 overall at the end of today or tomorrow.
Evenepoel is flying today as well and wants the white jersey. Starting the day in 7th(0:21), he hits the intermediate in 7th as well, 15 seconds down on Phinney, but could challenge for new best time at the finish. He does! 28:51! That’s NEW LEAD time with just 6 riders left and the new GC lead for a few minutes.
Kamna should not be forgotten amongst the TT favorites for today and enters the day in 5th (0:19). He’s 5th at the intermediate, still to Phinney who is 2 spots right behind him. What a 2nd half… NEW LEAD! 28:47 for Kamna who might have to turn over the lead in a moment, but gives himself a buffer heading into the high mountains tomorrow.
Schmid isn’t going to come up with the best time today and gives up 1:18. Still, a very good first 6 stages for the Jura star.
Phinney is right behind Schmid if that shows how great a ride he is on. Phinney is just 0:13 heading into the day in 3rd position but wants the yellow before the final stage. Phinney comes through the intermediate in 11:53, the only rider ahead of the 12:00 and this final time is set to be phenomenal.
By phenomenal, it’s a 29 second increase over the best time. 28:18! The time is absolutely CRUSHED!
Pidcock has a huge battle in front of him, already losing 32 seconds at the intermediate point. Thankfully he has Rodenberg ahead to chase, who is not enjoying the day, but truly overperformed in the first six. Back to the race leader, that’s no more! 1:14 down on Phinney for a time of 29:34 – which looks a lot stronger if he goes earlier in the day without Phinney’s new crazy fast time. He’ll still give up the white jersey.
Phinney takes a great GC lead with 0:35 over Kamna who can’t contest with the Fastned star tomorrow. Phinney also grabs the new Points jersey.
