Volta a Portugal
Stage 1
6.5km Prologue
Phinney enters the race as the favorite, but with Galta as the defending champion. 21 teams together here in Portugal making the best of the 8 stages.
Noia is the first major prologue rider to get started and he sets the best time of the first 9 riders at 7:15. No time checks today on just 6.5km so only times at the finish can tell us how good someone looks.
Stash is the next major prologue rider up. Especially because Stash could also challenge in the sprints, this is an important time. Current 2nd at 7:16, but who knows how it’ll play out.
Milan is also here to focus on the prologue. A new 2nd place time for him at 7:16. Unpictured, Schmid has finished 0:26 back of Noia, so not a great start for the puncher.
Pedersen is the next prologue competitor off the ramp. A very similar plan in the race compared to Stash, where prologue is combined with sprint outsider. He pops into a new 2nd place 7:16. Plapp has also come through with a 7:17, good for 5th at the moment. No one else within 5 seconds of the leader which is still Noia.
No love for Pidcock in the preview, but one of the coolest riders in the race comes in at 7:25; 10 seconds back. Rikunov goes without camera time but into 6th at 7:17. Let’s see what Pidcock can do the rest of the race if anything.
Rekita powers off the line, looking for a good time and to preview the course for Chavanne who is the day’s favorite. He does well, 7:13 and the new race lead!
Norsgaard is next up as another good time trialist and similarly aiming for a top time. It’s 7:14, so Rekita keeps the lead.
Forssell is the first Carlsberg rider to show up on screen and does a great time. 7:13 ties for the lead, but is currently slotted behind Rekita on fractions. Still, just what he wants heading into the two sprints.
Haugard is one of the best combo TTers in the field and he’s off with just about 3 full rounds of riders to still to go. And the Norwegian champion is now the new leader. 7:11 is two seconds better than the rest. This will be a tough time to match.
It’s Evenepoel next to challenge the top times, as Daniel of McCormick is the best rider in about 40, putting him into 9th at 7:16 with no other impactful results. Evenepoel looks to change that and does. 4th place at the time and 7:14 is fantastic for the young star
Chavanne is the next contender to hit the startline and has seen a teammate go quickly already. Anything other than the top time would be a disappointment. No disappointment here! 7:09 and the first time under 7:10. Clearly there can’t be much more time to gain.
Andersen appears just a few riders later as the number 1 favorite, but knowing how good Chavanne is. No matter, it’s another new best time! 7:07! Andersen into the lead and likely not to be challenged although you never know.
We head into the final riders per team shortly after.
Kamna is one of the first potential GC favorites to hit the start with his combo TT and mountain prowess. A great result for 4th best at 7:12! He will be happy heading into stage 2.
Valter is not a favorite for today, but enough of a favorite for the race to earn shout-out here. Today is about limiting losses and those arrive at 7:39 or 32 seconds lost for now.
Warchol is a pure climber as well, but can earn some recognition. Not as bad as Valter, at 29 seconds down for the day.
Same deal for Barguil! About avoiding major losses and 24 seconds is not a major loss for today. Stage 7 will be a tougher day to avoid the time.
Rodrigues is much better against the clock, but not a major favorite for the stage. Still, he should be a top 5 contender for the race overall and clocks in at 7:20 – 13 seconds back. Very strong and the best of the major players so far.
Godoy is not the strongest on the TT bike but they’re a monster heading uphill. 7:36 and 29 seconds back of Andersen who holds the lead still.
Yates is McCormick’s hopes for this race. A good time for the Brit at 7:27 and 20 seconds down. Keeping him middle of the road for GC results today and ahead of a number of competitors. Just 5 riders left.
Almeida is a top 5 favorite as well and one of the better prologue riders who can climb. 7:23 and only 16 seconds back is something he’ll be happy with.
Galta the defending champion will be trying anything he can this race. It’s 20 seconds back which compared to others is not bad, but certainly not what he would want to defend the tile. 7:27.
Eastman is the 2nd favorite for GC and enjoys a longer TT much more than today. Only 15 seconds back at 7:22 puts him right where he needs to be assuming he can perform up to expectations later in the race.
Phinney is the race favorite and the only rider who can challenge Andersen as Phinney loves a time trial of any kind. And WOW! 7:07 is the time which equals Andersen. The organizers give it to Phinney! A wonderful start for the American to take the top spot as the final rider on the day.
Just wait! Original rankings put Andersen behind Phinney, but the Dane is the one on the podium! A 2nd check of the timing puts him as the first race leader. Phinney may actually enjoy not having to put his team on the front from stage 2.
