Preview
The penultimate race of the 2023 PT calendar is here: the Japan Cup. The final battle between PT and PCT teams and a big opportunity for many teams to aid their final push to climb the rankings.
The route is, for the most part, a criterium around the city of Tsukuba on the Japanese main island of Honshū. In the past, this race has been decided in a number of ways: often, a small group has sprinted for the win, but individual attackers (or duos) have been successful as well, such as last year when  Buchmann and  Calmejane broke away from the other contenders, with the better end for the German. Both riders are on the startlist again this year, but the competition will be fierce.

The top puncheurs of both PT and PCT are here, led by Lopez and Areruya, respectively. De Bie and Lutsenko complete the very upper tier of the contenders, at least on paper.
The other major contenders can be somewhat divided into pure puncheurs, McCarthy perhaps being the one extreme of the spectrum, and the riders who are strong climbers, too, such as Beltran, Buchmann, and Kwiatkowski. Binance should be highlighted as the team with the strongest dual threat, adding Sagan to Kwiatkowski.

A deep field of third tier contenders will try their best to emulate Calmejane’s sensational result from last year. The French is one of them, but his team is one of many that doesn’t just have one clear leader but multiple dart throws, if you will, to come away with a decent amount of points.

Tough field here but hopefully Borges can find some strength! Would have to be pretty happy with a Top 10 and some depth points from Mas. Anything better will be very well celebrated

That circuit hill climb looks brutal, both steep and long enough to cause big damage, I think. Thus, MAL must be the obvious favourite, eventhough Areruya has been brilliant this year. If the latter can do similar to his Balkans racing, MAL will have a lot of work to do.
Those two should be kind of in a league of their own if the race proves selective. If it doesn’t, Lutsenko and De Bie might have a decent chance as well, if we get some kind of similar scenario to GP Cyclistes. |

Very entertaining, albeit disappointing for us, race here! Great report and happy to see an MAL win with AreruryaGOAT 3rd, hopefully this means I won't have to battle his ass next year in PCT

Areruya 3rd is hopefully good enough for Xeros promotion ambitions. Good one.
Winning is fine i guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant after cycliste desaster result but it probably helps in the fight for 2nd. Just in the moment, i would have taken a worse result for easier renewals. As long as Lombardia is good enough to secure our sponsor goal, we'll be fine either way

More disappointment from Borges but he's likely worn our colours for the last time so we won't need to deal with that again. Mas finishing ahead of him and in the Top 20 is a bit more respectable. Not the greatest points haul but it's a little to keep us moving.

"Average" result here but achieving the Top 5 goal (I would have been furious if he didn't as it was an OR goal with Winning Benelux which we already did ) and some much-needed points for us in the business end of the season after he and MAL went down swinging at each other in Canada. Congrats knockout even if I understand you'd rather save on wages at this point. Hope it bodes well for Lombardia.

Much better from Benoot and at least he's ending the season on a good note, after a disappointing first half. Still won't be enough for those promotion spots but at least we keep fighting.
