Tour de Pologne
HC – 7 Stages
The 7 stages in Poland offer a wide variety of finishes with an emphasis on our hill specialists. A stage 1 prologue will open up the time gaps as GC hopefuls and stage hunters both attack the 7.7km solo ride. Stages 2, 6, and 7 all feature hilly [i] mountain-top[/b] finishes. Officially these should still benefit those puncheurs, but a strong climbers should also be able to make a difference, especially on stages 6 and 7. Stages 3 and 4 should benefit the pure flat sprinters, especially given the length of the stages. Stage 5 is most versatile with a hilly lead-up to a punchy, but flat finish. Expect the flat specialists not to make the finish, but some sprinters may think they can find success here.
History
Tour de Pologne is entering its 7th consecutive season in the HC calendar, with a variety of other opportunities pre-2017.
Joseph Areruya returns as the defending champion. Areruya won 2 stages, GC and the points jersey last year so more than just a pure GC win will be necessary to relive last year’s success. Marcus Faglum Karlsson is the next best returner with his 7th in 2022. The only other Tour de Pologne taking the start line is Eduard Alexander Beltran who took the GC in 2015. Beltran has 3 stage wins from 2014 and 2021.
Let’s look at each of the teams racing here:

★★★★★
Faglum Karlsson returns as one of the top GC finishers from the last edition with a great prologue capability. Gesbert should also stay in contention for many of the tougher finishers and could take a stage or two. Gibbons is here for the sprint stages.

★★
Victor Lafay is the best chance for this CT group and should be contesting for a top 15-20 GC spot. Wackerman may be in the group trying to survive for a strong sprint on stage 5.

★★★★
Louis Meintjes is clearly the GC leader and will be trying to make the biggest difference on the longer climbs. His combination of MO – HI – STA should give him a good chance to contest against Areruya. Ndayisega is an all-star domestique for Meintjes while Mugisha might join a breakaway or two.

★★★★★
Wilco Kelderman comes with the best hill stat of the entire startlist! He’ll be tough to beat and should be Colombini’s focus here. El Sabbahi will contest the sprint stages while Gebrezgabihier will be Kelderman’s last man in support.

★★★★
Moscon will lead the hill squad here while the team has also opted for a mountain focused team. Smith, Lasinis, and Pronskiy all looked prepped to take time should the early climbs take more energy than expected. Losch is one of the top options for the flat stages but won’t make it over the undulating terrain.

★★★
Stannard and Guerreiro are the two GC hopes for DuckDuckGo – Everesting, they’ll be outside hopes, but Guerreiro should be a stage favorite come stage 5 if he can make it to last 5km in the front group. Petit will look to represent in the sprint stages.

★★★
Fastned are banking on climbing KM as Olivier comes in as one of the best climbers in the race. Vanhoucke could also stay in good GC position if he takes some time in the prologue. Cras will also be a strong rider in the mountains while others are here for experience.

★★★
Penasa will lead the group of strong climbers, but they’re missing some specialty on the hills. Barta and Nsengimana will likely lose time on the more selective stages but a strong prologue could earn some team priority. Seboka may try a descent attack to show his skill.

One of the stronger full teams here, Indosat Ooredoo has options no matter which way the race goes. Yates is the most likely to hold leadership although Bilbao could also take over depending on the scenario. Kolar, Arifin, and Rohendi are a supporting cast almost everyone is jealous of. Arif Prayogo is here for a stellar prologue.

Errazkin and Masnada lead this team basically alone. We’ll see who decides to work for the other and hope the focus can stay on Poland as they see their teammates succeeding in the Giro. Marchewka can make a difference in the prologue.

Turgis and Meurisse are a stellar 1-2 punch for Lampre – Pinarello. They’ll likely lose some time in the opening stage, but their teamwork should provide some opportunities for success. Don’t be surprised to see Turgis attacking for a stage win.

Another one of the strong teams across the board, Boswell should end up getting the leadership role, but may struggle is the climbing is hard from the beginning of some stages. Boivin will be around for the flat stages while Matsuda could threaten on stage 1.

Sauber comes ready for the punchy stages and has many options depending on who feels best. Hirschi may be the best option on the longer stages while Azman is another great option. Van Garderen may also ask for an opportunity or two.

Rodenberg is another sprint favorite who will also lead the team in the prologue. More importantly, Kron and Schlegel should share leadership across the hills and adjust as other favorites define their strategies. Expect a strong result, but be surprised if they end up on the top of the podium in the final stages.

Last, but certainly not least! Defending Champion Areruya is the strongest rider her and ready to defend his crown. It’s a young team in support with Kipkemboi the strongest help in the mountains. We’ll see what Areruya can do to cement his Pologne legacy.

Awesome preview!
Very good team we’ve sent here alongside Yates for his first race with us. Riders for all stages, and hopeful of a top-5 GC. The hybrids should rule here but who knows? This season has shown that sprint gets Dan be hard to drop so maybe they hang on until the last stage and cause havoc? Regardless, Areruya’s race to lose here with Buchmann and Benoot hanging off his coattails I reckon.
Thanks again for the preview!

Thanks for the preview and for taking this seancoll!
We're here for the breaks - with more success than in Guadeloupe and Pais Vasco, I hope -, fighting for KoM and stage glory
Also to give our youngsters experience at a higher level.
Good luck everyone!

We bring a pretty strong team here, hopefully at least one of Faglum Karlsson/Gesbert/Chaves can get a good GC result. Also a rare chance for Gibbons to ride for his own chances in the sprints.

Thanks to Sean for taking this on. Not sure there is much hope for Boswell as the hybrids will rule. Thought I had sent Narvaez fir the punchy stages and not Boswell. Think that would have been a better strategy. Maybe I will be surprised.

Thanks a lot for picking this up Sean!
Really excited to get back to racing after not having raced for like 3 weeks at this point. This is a goal race for us with a top 5 as the target but that was set with the goal of acquiring and trainig Higuita in the market, which didnt go to plan!
There is only one rider that can win this race but the fight for the remaining top 5 spots will be super interesting with the strong UBS team, Benoot, a trained Gesbert and many more in the mix!

I think we have a good chance at a podium and that should be the goal for Meintjes. Areruya is obviously the favorite (although I did almost miss him, there seems to be a slight error in the Xero lineup in the preview ), and there are enough strong riders here that Meintjes could finish ~6th and it would be acceptable, but I'm hoping for more, obviously. Tesfatsion is a Top 5 U25 rider here, so some points there would be nice, though there's always some luck involved in how that classification plays out.
Good luck everyone, and thanks for taking care of the race, sean!

I hope to see my loan-outs Louvel and Boileau in the break. Apart from that, I'll follow the race as an interested bystander.
Thanks to sean for the preview and the reports! Also the idea to test everyone's attention should be further explored in the future

Not sure at all what to expect. Would definitely not have picked the race deliberately, but we have to do it. Errazkin and Masnada have both done well on stages that favor hybrids so far, so the last two days should suit them compared to the pure puncheurs. Page will make his debut as our lead sprinter, and as far as I see the competition isn't huge and therefore pretty open for the two flat stages.
For the overall, there should be no way past Areruya, but the race behind should be pretty interesting.
Thanks for the preview and the reports, sean!

The conspiracy to stop Areruya winning already started before a rider left the prologue start
Speaking of hope everyone enjoys their time gaps. Hopefully Areruya is on the form he should be and can make this a big race for us like last year.

Good results from Jungels and Ocampo. Not so much from Benoot but that was always known. Hopefully this does not mean that a 15 second extra deficit knocks off about 100 hill points from his stats
Congrats to UBS and thanks for the report

Great to see Marchewka getting a Top 10 (and a point) in his home race!
Decent racing by Masnada and Errazkin, now it's all about staying with the top puncheurs, and maybe get some stage results (especially Masnada has shown time and time again that he can defy the stronger puncheurs - with the previous game version ^^).
Congrats to UBS, great to see you getting a really strong result for once
Thanks for the report to sean, of course!

Good first stage! DAP did really well and was close to the top, and Yates did remarkably well to limit his losses. Couldn’t ask for much more
Congrats Bushwackers on the win, and thanks for the report!

Sick, the race is over before it even began. How the fuck there's a 36 ridder main group and neither Turgis or Meurisse make it is criminal.
Thanks for the report and congrats to the teams that get to follow these next 5 stages with some excitement.

Still 5 stages and 17 seconds to go and with how close 76MO Lucas Hamilton got last year I'm not counting any chickens. But a very promising start, Areruya with some awful positioning and still very very strong to take the win from four rows back.
Spoiler On current evidence he may be unbeatable in road stages after this latest training? 2/2
