2022 World Championships
Stange, Norway

For the conclusion of the 2022 season, the best of the best come together to compete for one of the most prestigeous accolades in cycling: the title of World Champion. It's a long course, three circuits of some of the best cobbled climbs that Norway has to offer. There hasn't been a parcour suitable for the true flandriennes since Sam Bewley's victory in Kraków 2016; Sofia 2019 doesn't count. The likes of Mads Pedersen and Adam Blythe failed to make their respective national selections, which means that some world-class cobblers will be sitting on the couch watching alongside us! Who then are the ones to watch?

There are multiple ascents scattered throughout this years parcour. There are three seperate short climbs in the final 5 kilometres alone. Each and every one of these hills represents an opportunity for somebody to make a decisive move, utilising their superior speed on the uphill to force a gap. The likes of Floris Gerts, Tiesj Benoot, and Mekseb Debesay appear to be the most capable of enacting such a plan; perhaps it will be Jan Polanc looking to improve on his podium from 2019.

Alternatively, a rouleur might try to take advantage of the attrition brought on by the cobblestones, simply riding everybody else off their wheel. The only issue is that there are numerous riders which might fit into this archetype. There are former podium-sitters Danny Summerhill and Florian Senechal. The likes of Lukas Spengler and Arman Kamyshev will struggle on the climbs and lack the team depth to cover their weakness. Marcos Altur and Ruben Zepuntke might have a slightly better time when it comes to the hills.

For years, it has been Sam Bewley who dominated the cobblestones. He had his time in the rainbow jersey after that win in Kraków but now, in the twilight of his career, he might have an opportunity to secure it again if thing come down to a select sprint. His main competitors in that regard will be Joeri Stallaert and Edward Theuns, with the latter also rather capable on shorter uphill stints. That's three Belgians I've mentioned already, they are by far the strongest team and are diverse enough that they should have multiple cards to play whatever situation arises.

My pick for the man to challenge them is one Lukasz Wisniowski. The winner in Sofia 2019 is the strongest cobbler in the world, is one of the best rouleurs, shouldn't be overly troubled by a few bumps, and isn't half-bad when it comes to a sprint. With former-U23 world champion Przemyslaw Kasperkiewicz in tow he won't be lacking for support either.

Of course, the elite road race isn't the only event on the calendar. We start out with the B road race, where top riders like CT-sensation Lahcen Saber and the Kuroeda brothers compete for the title and a spot in the elite race. Taylor Phinney has dominated the ITT competition, winning more times than everybody else combined. Mads Würtz elected not to attend and Justo Tenorio has begun to decline. Instead it falls to Marlen Zmorka to challenge the king. We'll also get to see the stars of the future duke it out in the U23 competitions and see which nation can produce the best combination against the clock.

Excited about the WCs even though I don't think we have anyone likely to do anything. Was looking forward to Pidcock in the U23s but he got nominated for the Elites so not going to happen Sad Hope he does well there!
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

Excited to see my cobbles core spread out across their respective nationalities. Daniel could be a key helper for Senechal or pending on how the race pans out could be in with a shot of a title with his strong finish! The Belgian team also looks incredible with GVK being a bit further down the pecking order there I expect him to play a role and keep everything together when the splits start to occur.

Also will be insane to see if the King has one more in him and can usurp the favourites, would be quite the story if he did that!

Zmorka as an outsider in the time trial and Zepuntke as a top-10 contestant hoping for some amazing legs. Nice to see Mexico field a relatively competitive team in the B-race, maybe Ulloa is also capable of a top-10 over there. Thanks for the preview, liefwarrior!

Missed the selection PM's I guess. Let's see what Gamper can do here.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Some good representation for us across the races although not too much hope for success outside of the TTT where I hope that the French can go back-to-back for Cosnefroy and Thomas or the Italians for Conci or Spain for Castrillo/Soler.

Thank you for the preview and looking forward to some exciting racing!!

Thanks for the great preview. I think we get a small group sprint and one of the Belgians wins as team depth can really help in cobbles.

Nice to see my stagiaires getting some exposure in the U23.

Very likely to be Wisniowski's last chance to become a double world champion. The course is perfect for him. Very excited to see how he goes. The Polish team also looks good for this, with Kasperkiewicz set to be a key domestique/getting a free role he can benefit from himself. Curious to see how they play it Grin

Not many to root for in the RR event so go Zepuntke! In the TTT and ITT we have more chances, hoping someone comes home with a medal. Thanks for the preview!

Gutted to not get anyone into the U23 races. Maybe a long shot for the 72TT Perez to make the ITT which is always competitive, but did think one of Perez or Kelly or Cole would slip into the RR.
My hopes on you Abner and a Hilly/MT route next season!

San Marino getting it's own team in both the U23 TT and U23 RR is massive for the nation, the next generation is looking strong and having a second team focussing on the nation is already proving beneficial for the project after just the first year. Hopefully it's a sign of things to come and we can work together to get in the senior races in the coming years.

This is going to be Spengler's big break, just watch Grin

Love that there’s 3 Indonesian teams competing in the WC, how good! All we can hope for is a bit of tv time, but even being a part of the most important races of the season is more than satisfying.

Belgium v Poland for me, will be fun to see how it unfolds. Also the USA, AUS and Russian teams all being so solid should lead to a close TTT.

Awesome write up, a really amazing preview. Thank you so much for the time and export put into it Smile

That Belgium team is so stacked and also our only chance of getting an individual prize from this WCs via Benoot. Thanks for the great preview lief Smile

Not a lot for us to follow closely here. Except, of course, Gerts in the RR and maybe Remco in the U23 ITT.

There was a mistake in the way the U23 riders were selected. Forgot they didn't need nominations at all. It is fixed now. Startlist available here to check till lief has time to update this thread: https://pcmdaily....lists.xlsx

Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Pretty happy with my team's representation in the TT events. If I counted correctly, that's 11 riders in the TTT (thereof loanouts Bissegger & Brunel), and we have a 5/8 for Switzerland. Best chances should be for Brunel with France, or Masnada with Italy, or maybe Rekita & Marchewka with Poland.

The latter are also Poland's duo for the ITT event - where we unfortuantely missed out on a selection for Switzerland. On the other hand, Rowsell surprisingly gets a late career highlight representing GB - although it's a shame to see how many of the top TTers are missing out...

We don't have any expectations for the RR, although Stepniak and Rekita aren't too unlikely to help their leader take the title. Or maybe Aregger in his very last maxed race can provide some good support for Spengler?

In the U23 category, no hopes at all. We do have both Swiss starters in the TT, but that's unfortunately not a sign of strength this year.
And the RR... can you explain me again what that cobbles thingy is?

Thanks for the preview, and thanks in advance to all reporters Smile
