Welcome to the now 15th edition of the Vuelta a Colombia. For whatever reason this is one of only two races on the South American continent on the MGUCI calendar. As expected this is a race for the climbers with the added or removed bonus of no time-trialing. Also none of the stages are categorised as hilly, which makes this as pure a climbing race as it can be. The sprinters get their two days to shine and the GC is usually sorted out on stage 5, so the final stage is likely breakaway friendly.
With that said let's look at some of the favourites:
| FL | MO | HI | RS | RC | AC | Kudus | 69 | 84 | 77 | 77 | 79 | 70 | Madrazo | 66 | 83 | 74 | 77 | 78 | 69 | Padun | 67 | 82 | 77 | 74 | 76 | 75 | Haig | 72 | 82 | 74 | 75 | 78 | 73 | Wellens | 72 | 82 | 75 | 80 | 76 | 68 | Cattaneo | 70 | 82 | 70 | 80 | 80 | 70 | Quintana | 68 | 82 | 74 | 76 | 76 | 66 | Olivier | 72 | 81 | 76 | 80 | 77 | 71 | Oomen | 71 | 81 | 75 | 77 | 78 | 69 | Choi | 71 | 81 | 74 | 76 | 79 | 68 | Taaramäe | 71 | 81 | 74 | 74 | 70 | 70 | Shikai | 72 | 81 | 71 | 76 | 78 | 67 |
Merhawi Kudus comes back to the race as last year's winner, when he upset Lecuisinier for the overall victory. This year he's the #1 favourite, can he live up to that? Madrazo is slowly aging, but he was 3rd here last year and he is on paper Kudus's main competitor. Padun is taking over for Pluchkin at Popo4Ever and this race should suit him well with no TT kms. Haig is another rider who comes back and will be looking to improve upon 7th place from last year.
The list of great climbers continues with Wellens who is sharing leadership with Olivier. You would expect Cattaneo in a race with an ITT, but he's perfectly capable of finishing on the podium. Quintana disappointed at this race last year, he should be able to do better in his home race. Oomen probably overperformed last year, we'll see if he can do it again. Choi, Taaramäe and Shikai complete the list of favourites as 81 climbers.
| FL | MO | HI | RS | RC | AC | Novak | 68 | 80 | 77 | 76 | 77 | 76 | Monsalve | 67 | 80 | 75 | 79 | 76 | 72 | Meintjes | 71 | 80 | 78 | 76 | 78 | 69 | Pinot | 72 | 80 | 74 | 79 | 75 | 69 | Sicard | 71 | 80 | 76 | 76 | 79 | 67 | Arndt | 71 | 79 | 76 | 76 | 72 | 75 | Bongiorno | 69 | 79 | 75 | 77 | 77 | 69 | Pomoshnikov | 71 | 79 | 74 | 76 | 74 | 66 | Nerz | 69 | 79 | 71 | 70 | 72 | 66 | Higuita | 69 | 78 | 77 | 78 | 79 | 75 | Frankiny | 69 | 78 | 76 | 75 | 77 | 75 | Chamorro | 66 | 78 | 75 | 76 | 70 | 74 | Petelin | 69 | 78 | 74 | 71 | 71 | 75 | Elissonde | 66 | 78 | 73 | 77 | 79 | 66 |
Novak is a great backup option for Lierse if they need it. Monsalve is as close to home as he can get, hopefully for him he has a big result in him. Meintjes would have loved a hilly stage, but his stat combo still makes him a dangerman. Pinot and Bongiorno are here for home team ISA - Hexacta. Sicard gets a chance to show what he has left in the tank. Kraftwerk going with their usual depth approach with Arndt and Nerz. Double leadership also for Sauber with Pomoshnikov and Frankiny. Higuita leads the charge for Isostar's climbers, who might be more suited to breakaways along with Elissonde.
Sprinter | FL | RS | SP | AC | Lead out | FL | RS | SP | AC | Kennaugh | 76 | 70 | 81 | 80 | Riesebeek | 74 | 75 | 69 | 72 | Minali | 73 | 74 | 79 | 79 | Barta | 69 | 74 | 72 | 67 | Lutsyshyn | 70 | 73 | 79 | 80 | Aniolkowski | 74 | 73 | 78 | 77 | Contreras | 72 | 75 | 78 | 80 | Sagiv | 77 | 71 | 72 | 72 | Kamberaj | 75 | 73 | 79 | 78 | Tiller | 74 | 75 | 74 | 73 | Hodeg | 72 | 74 | 79 | 78 | Tikhonin | 70 | 71 | 68 | 72 | Page | 75 | 72 | 78 | 79 | Yudha | 68 | 71 | 64 | 71 | Marin | 74 | 73 | 78 | 78 | Huertas | 70 | 70 | 72 | 73 | Van der Kooij | 73 | 74 | 78 | 77 | Conti | 67 | 71 | 68 | 74 | Garcia Cortina | 76 | 72 | 77 | 76 | Oldani | 70 | 73 | 68 | 71 | Swift | 70 | 64 | 80 | 76 | Mayer | 68 | 71 | 72 | 76 |
To break up the climbing fest there are two sprint stages. Kennaugh is clearly the top dog here. Lead out or not, can he confirm the favourite status. Minali has an 'interesting' lead out in Barta if he ends up using him. Lutsyshyn on the other hand might have issues following his. Contreras and Kamberaj look well supported, it would be fun if one of them made it work.
Hodeg will try to repeat last year when he managed to win both sprints. Page, Marin, Van der Kooij and Garcia Cortina are the less favoured sprinters here, but we know those often find success. Swift still has great top speed, but his acceleration is not the same and with low resistance we'll see if he can still compete.

Fair assessment that Oomen overperformed last year, but with Novak here I hope they can get us more points.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

My initial plan was to bring Morton instead of Haig, which didn't work for known reasons.. not my favorite race for Haig with no TT on the menu, but a Top-5 must be the goal anyway. He already performed in Ukraine (which went better than expected), so let's see, what he can do now. Obviously anything can happen from podium to just a low Top-10 and it may come down to daily form and tactics.

Perhaps an odd one for Cattaneo but it couldn't just ignore every PTHC race on the calendar. P7 here is already more points than second in a C1, and given the field that seems doable.
Hodeg is back obviously. Expecting four stage wins this year.

Going to be a tough one for Taaramae to score big but he should be Top 10 and hopefully knocking on the door of the Top 5. Fingers crossed the supporting cast gets him over the line! Would like to see a couple breakaways too.
Thank you for the preview and looking forward to the race! Good luck all

Phinney was meant to be here until I realized the planning trouble. Now it will be a tough race for our home heros.

Top 10 goal for us. As long as we get that, I'll be happy. The startlist also puts him around the Top 10 spot, so let's hope for that. We have a very strong support team here, which hopefully pays dividends. Interesting to see Minali so high up the sprinters list, wasn't expecting that. Let's see if he can get some points in the bag from the two stages. I doubt Barta will be his leadout though
Thanks for the preview red

Lacking a bit of time at the moment as I need to recherche and write a paper till end of the year, which in addition to regular work and family takes most of my time at the moment which should call down again once it's finished.
Try to follow the mg though as good as possible. Obviously with this lineup expectations are high.
Wellens/Olivier hopefully coop well potentially doing a top5&top10. A lot of work can be done by the strong team behind them led by Carboni, a 3rd top25 guy possibly.
Startlist obviously is tough the leaders should try to avoid bad days on the vital days but at least having couple options should help. |

I really need Madrazo to perform here after the disappointing start in Portugal. P-N didn't really give me hope, so I remain cautious. But a podium is a must here, ideally with a few good stage ranks. Thanks for the preview, looking forward to the reports!

There are worse ways to end winning streaks than with a podium, though
Great to see De Stijl's perfect leadout being rewarded with the stage win

Test failed there by Taaramae. Clearly not in the best form in that stage but at least he didn’t lose any more time than necessary. Surprisingly strong though by Mas to finish in the same group. Does at least give a secondary threat for an interesting attack option!

So far so lame, but good enough. Not a shame to lose time on Kudus.

Solid by Higuita, but we hoped for more. Chamorro and Petelin are major disappointments as of now.

Well. Looks like it's gonna be a rough season watching Madrazo. I assume it's the poor hill/acceleration combo that lets him down, that I maybe misevaluated. Could be a string of bad luck with daily form, but it's been a consistent pattern so far this season. He's still 5th in the GC, but given what we invested in him, both in terms of fee and salary, and what/who we did not pursue as a result, anything but reliable podium finishes are a major letdown. But perhaps we're due one. Still a long season to go, we'll see.
I'm also pretty disappointed in the supporting cast. Ndayisenga outside of the Top 40 twice is really bad. The one silver lining here has been El Sabbahi on stage one. And of course the nice reports, thanks for those, red

Strong ride by Haig, initiating a selection with a late attack and holding on for a podium finish. Obviously can't complain here. Hopefully he can keep this form at least until the second to next day, that should be the crucial stage for the GC.
Anyone else with a partly very very slow Daily website these days? Or is it just me for some weird reasons?
