Welcome to the World Championship Individual Time Trial! A couple of days ago we saw Byron Munton taking a somewhat surprising U23 Title, are we doing to have any surprises come our way today or will it be a victory on home soil for Taylor Phinney? The route is a relatively flat stroll through New York which will see the riders take on a massive 58km against the clock!
With a shocking rejection from Tim Wirtgen, Giles Heymes made his way into the Luxembourgish team for this year’s ITT and he will be our first rider on the route.
First real contender on this year’s route is Jasha Sütterlin, however the German’s time at checkmark 1 is 12” slower than current leader Josh Atkins, who seems to be the first rider to keep an eye out for. Another contender in Viennet, with a similar time to the one of Sütterlin, maybe this year’s route is tougher than it seems?
First outsider shows their skills! Damien Howson with new quickest time at the first checkmark 6” faster than Atkins’ time.
His time is not allowed to stand for a long time though as Cattaneo puts in a time 4” faster than Howson’s! Cattaneo’s time is beaten by Taaramäe as the pace seems to be picking up!
With our first 11 riders through the final checkpoint here’s a look at the standings, Josh Atkins currently in the hot seat!
With all remaining riders having kicked off the ramp Paillot goes 3rd quickest across the first checkpoint, not looking like a strong day for the French time trailists!
WE HAVE A NEW FASTEST TIME at the first checkpoint. Justo Tenorio goes 6” faster than Taaramäe, while the varying shorter inclines seems to be too much for Vlatos who is currently 15th 30” down on Tenorio already!
The Spaniard’s time is not allowed to stand for a long time as first Mads Würtz goes equal with Tenorio, and finally Taylor Phinney goes fastest at 5” faster than both. Strong start from the American on home soil!
Here’s an overview of the time at the first checkpoint after every rider has been through it, strong opener from Vegard Stake Laengen who might be on for a top 10!
Meanwhile Taaramäe goes quickest at the second checkpoint and almost catching Roy Goldstein who’s understandably somewhat out of his depth today against the strongest TTers in the world. At the finish line Atkins has finally handed over the the hot seat to Howson who is currently 31” faster than the Kiwi with a time currently sat at 1h14’43”.
The trend continues at the second checkpoint with Tenorio beating the Estonian’s time by 13” Paillot dropping 30” to Tenorio alone, this could get a lot worse. Vlatos is fully out of it currently 1’15” behind at the second checkpoint, a disappointing result for the Greek machine.
Some of you might wonder why I haven’t talked about one of the biggest time trialling sensations of the season Marlen Zmorka, well the thing is much like Vlatos he is nowhere to be seen in the fun part of the standings so far crosses the second checkpoint in a tentative 16th 1’03” down on Tenorio.
Phinney goes fastest past the second checkpoint as well, seems to be no sign of the favourite slowing down at all, increasing his gap to Tenorio to 12” who is currently 2nd after Würtz who seemingly struggled between the first and second checkpoint.
Also here’s a quick overview of the second checkpoint’s top 10 with every rider having gone past it.
Meanwhile both Cattaneo and Taaramäe have crossed the finish line with the Estonian GC legend taking the hot seat from the Italian after going 18” faster.
Meanwhile Cataford finishes his race at 1’16” down on Taaramäe. At the same moment in time Tenorio goes fastest at the third checkpoint with a time that’s 17” faster than the Estonian’s time.
Luke Durbridge has been consistently 8th fastest at the previous two checkpoints and in a tentative 6th at the third one with Zmorka, Würtz and Phinney yet to pass he seems to be on that exact pace.
And the Dane is unable to beat Tenorio’s time maybe he is able to put time into him on the home stretch as he is currently 10” down.
Phinney continues to set the pace a tad bit higher than the competition as he crosses the third and final checkpoint in first place 21” faster than Tenorio!
With only a few riders to finish here’s what the third checkpoint is looking like:
And an update on the current standings at the finish line:
Tenorio can see two of his competitors as he goes under the Flamme Rouge, is his time fast enough to be able to withstand the machine that is Phinney? He goes first 20” faster than Taaramäe who can most likely kiss a potential medal goodbye.
Durbridge crosses the line with Vlatos in his sights however it only amounts to a 6th place that will most likely be traded into an 8th place finish once the last few places have been decided.
AND LOOK AT THIS Würtz is about to pass Zmorka under the Flamme Rouge, not a day to be remembered for the Ukrainian. But this might bode well for the Dane as he nears the end of his effort.
AND SO IT DOES the Dane goes quickest at the line in the same time as Tenorio which means that we might need the MGUCI call as to who will take the silver medal.
But here comes Phinney, who looks determined to get this home win over the line!
And he crosses the line 30” faster than the Dane as he takes the rainbow jersey in home country, what a ride from the favourite!
And after looking at the nano seconds it’s actually Tenorio who takes home the silver medal, must be a tough one to swallow for the Dane!
