Tour du Maroc - Preview

Welcome to the Kingdom of Morocco for the last week long stage race of the 2021 Cycling Season.

There's a bit for everyone over our 8 days of racing here in Morocco with a bit for the Climbers, the Puncheurs and the Sprinters.

Our race winner is likely to be a Climber with Stage 3 and Stage 8 to be the most decisive of the entire tour.

There are 2 stages in which the Puncheurs will hope to succeed, these being stages 2 and 7.

Finally, we have 4 stages for the sprinters to fight amongst each other for stage honours, which will also allow them a chance to win the Points classification and also lead the race after the opening stage.

Race Favourites

Without knowing the potential impact of the 2 stages which will favour the puncheurs, the expectation would be that the climbers battle it out for the GC win. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/amc.png Jack Haig is the top favourite to win while the favourites to contest the Top 5 are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Daan Olivier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/akm.png Fredrik Strand Galta, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Yonathan Monsalve, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Rasmus Guldhammer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/eav.png Caio Godoy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png Natnael Berhane.

The top climber here for the 2 mountain stages is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ced.png Jose Alarcon. He will struggle to fight for the GC though.

Puncheurs

Not too many of the world's top puncheurs here but we do have 1 and he is one of, if not, the best. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Miguel Angel Lopez will be expecting to win one, or both, of the puncheur stages. The other 5 riders listed below are all quality riders but wouldn't have too much expectation to beat the Evonik man.

Sprinters

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/isa.png John Degenkolb is the top sprinter present here and has very capable support. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/pol.png Oscar Guerao lacks the acceleration but he's still a wily old fox. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kmm.png Rick Zabel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/cdb.png Asbjorn Kragh Andersen are also strong riders who will likely provide the most competition to Degenkolb.

We need to be extremely active in breakaways here to have any chance at decent scoring at all. Eyob, Uwizeyimana and Ndayisenga are all great options to fight for the mountain classification and maybe a stage win, but of course it depends on if they even try or if we send the Mugishas again Grin

The sprinting competition is also a bit tougher than I would have hoped. Maybe Perera can get one or two good results, that would be nice!

Thanks for the preview, looking forward to the reports LLS!

Oof what a startlist, hope Roglic can still leave a mark on the race!
It's the first time I'm here I think, so looking forward to it. Thanks for the preview!

I'm looking forward to see if Alarcon is good or awful here Pfft

But due to having him here, I'm guessing we won't get into any breakaways Frown

Important race for those battling relegation in PT and PCT, should be fun. Thanks for the preview Smile

Kraftwerk have brought our biggest guns.

Nerz for GC, Arndt targets S3, Boily for the hills, Zabel in the sprints.

Hopefully more than one of them can hit the target and squeeze us into our top 10 PCT goal.

Thanks for the review LLS.

Not mentioned in the preview and rightly so. Quite the shit team we have here. Hopefully Vingegaard can do something and do a decent GC, but it certainly won't be many points.

Thanks for doing the race, LLS!

Strong depth here. Galta mentioned as a top 5 outsider is encouraging, eventhough I doubt it Pfft Will be happy with a top 10 GC. Not sure how we're going to find more points than whatever GC points he might give us, though, as I'll be very pleasantly surprised if we somehow manage to get some significant stage points/jersey points. We shall see!

Should be an enjoyable race with lots of great climbers and puncheurs. Hoping the profiles work out well, and that we get a fun race with lots of attacks on many of the stages.

Wow, that startlist looks stronger than in some PT races...
Masnada and Habtom missing out on the favorites respectively the sprinters list is not surprising, though - we definitely need some extraordinary efforts to get any points at all out of this race. Clearly hoping for some breakaway luck here - or another TdS-like Masnada overperformance. He's definitely a better rounded rider than some of the mentioned favorites - but with 77Mo, I heavily doubt he'll be treated well by PCM Sad

Last big race of the year for us. Two goals at stake. The first is a GC top 5, and that seems like an unlikely ask given the startlist. But we needed a PTHC goal, and this one certainly fits Guldhammer's skillset. Mountains, some hilly stages, no TT. He's in with as good a shot at that top 5 as anyone else. The issue is just the amount of similar riders. He could finish 3rd or 13th, and I wouldn't be surprised either way.

The second goal is our standings top 15. We have a little more leeway with that one, but it still requires Guldhammer not to completely flop. We also have AK here to help on that front. His last race of what has been a phenomenal season from him. Hopefully he finishes it out strong.

Thanks for the preview!

Sad to not even be a favourite for JA but hopefully he can show his fighting spirit that he's displayed so much this season to fight the odds of a tough startlist and finish his great season with pride, especially with essentially the full mountain squad around him in Schleck-Higuita-Habtemichael-Fouche-Kipkemboi. Local favourite Hamid Tesfaye Hajji here for the flats and maybe breakaways?

Horrible race for us last year with Gesink at the top of his game. I'm hoping Maroc mames peace with us by giving us some magic points this time around. Magic cuz I cant figure where I could find then with this sort of field.

Good luck everyone

Probably Top 15 is a realistic goal for Penasa. Hope we get some stage/KOM points from the race but that usually happens very rarely. We need them though.

Thanks for the preview LLS Smile

Good stuff by Mugisha to be in the breakaway and now second in the U25 classification, at least for a day. Like I said before though, I hope we send stronger riders on the harder stages.

Perera in 44th place is unfortunate. I hope he'll at least participate in the remaining sprints. Congrats to Scorchio, well done by Degenkolb!

Curious how this race will go. Should be a good test whether i can expect Lopez to deliver in mountain races too. Stage is set for him

Hooray a German won, just not my German Smile

Kraftwerk chased and formed a train, usually the kiss of death so pleased to see Zabel managed to stay in the points.

Interesting to see Zabel and Degenkolb leaving a gap to leadouts gunning it with 1km to go. Based on ToA our sprinter needs to be dropped off at 700m or nearer to have the energy left to finish off the sprint.

Congrats to Scorchio and thanks to LLS for the report.

Great sprint by AKA, who continues to try to be our savior on his on. Good positioning, good timing, good speed. Can't say enough about how he changed my tune after his terrible year last year. Makes that training my money worth it.

Deserving winner in Degenkolb too, almost any sprinter who comes second to him shoot be satisfied. And I am.

Hopefully a big GC win and stage performances similar as last season.
Haig here is hurting I guess but other than him I hope Olivier with good support of Carboni and others can avoid being beaten by the others.

Not sure right now about the exact relegation fight but it might be too late by now, though if it`s still possible, this race plus Lombardia might need a huge scoring to save the team.

Well done Degenkolb, delivering the expected win. Happy to see Videika try his luck in the sprint. A top 10 finish was more than we could hope for.

Looking forward to the "real" stages for this race, those that will define the GC!
