Volta a Portugal

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Profiles/t1_portugal.jpg

Note: There will be a profile picture with KOMs for each stage report

Welcome to the 13th edition of the Volta a Portugal. Same as last year it is again part of the PTHC calendar and again features 9 stages. It's a popular race with a long standing tradition. A mix of time-trial kilometres, many short hills and a big mountain stage on the final day requires a strong allround rider to win this race. There are two flat stages, but don't be surprised if some sprinters get involved in the easier hilly stages as well.

With that said let's look at some of the favourites:

GC Favourites

We have a great list of contenders to win the overall, with different types of riders looking to ride to their strengths in order to gain the upper hand. Still favourite #1 has to be defending winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin. He might be a year older, but is still the best climber and TTer here. Following him are two very strong climbers in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aab.png Monsalve and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/trg.png Wellens. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mol.png Choi is very similar to Pluchkin albeit probably slightly worse in every aspect. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/aeg.png Olivier is one of the better punchy climbers in MG, great resistance, but lacks a bit of skill on the TT bike. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Gidich is more puncheur than the others, but has great all round ability. He needs to gain time on the hilly stages.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Gesink was like that in the best as well. An even better climber, but age has limited his explosiveness which could work against him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ubs.png Schelling and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Chiarello are similar riders with a decent punch. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/spr.png Ranaweera on the other hand is more of a diesel and needs to be careful of his positioning. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Rodrigues is another nice allrounder with decent TT ability. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Bennett is a very good climber and has proven it many times, but the TT kilometres will be going against him. He needs to ride an aggressive race.

Not the strongest field of sprinters in Portugal with only two flat stages. Still with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Guardini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/lph.png Maksimov we have two very similar and the most competent sprinters here on paper. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/gcn.png Itami, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/brs.png Perera and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Ackermann can rival the acceleration of the top two favourites. The others are outsiders, but in a weaker field anything is possible.

Well if the sprinters field is not as good, we can't say that about the puncheurs. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/iso.png Lutsenko and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/mos.png Sagan are two of the best there is. With four hilly rated stages we could see some intense contests between the two. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/duo.png Borges is no slouch either and one of the few riders out there that can match Lutsenko's explosive acceleration. With 2/4 of those stages finishing flat/downhill, don't be surprised if pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Ackermann blows past them in a sprint finish. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/ino.png Jensen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Meurisse are also very capable, with the latter especially a fast finisher as well. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Gidich might lack a bit of sprinting and acceleration to challenge the others, but it would do him well if he rides aggressively and works with the other puncheurs to gain time on the climbers.

Prologue Specialists

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/bnb.png Kennett697678

There are some quality prologue specialists here. These stages can be more random than others, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Leung should be favourite #1. At 6.5 km the course might hurt the pure specialists just a bit and Leung combines both very well. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Chavanne has great pedigree in prologues from his CT days, can he get Evonik a stage win? pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/xr0.png Schomber, yeah him. He's actually alright, just don't tell Jandal. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Paillot is a good TTer and he has to hope 6.5 km is long enough to beat the specialists. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/evo.png Stoltz gives Evonik a 2nd option after Chavanne.

The time-trial on the penultimate day will be a key GC day. There are a couple of ramps on the course that will help the TTers that can climb. With that said pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/fpc.png Paillot is great on the TT bike and he can climb decently enough. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin will want a good performance on the day and he has beaten time-trial specialists in the past. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2021/Micros/kng.png Leung is as strong as they come, but will the gradients hold him back? It will be interesting to see which riders' skill sets will prevail here.

Woof, tough startlist! You hit the nail on the head that Bennett needs an aggressive race to go high up in the GC unless he's on his tippest toppest form. It's a fun team around him with Meurisse, all-rounders like Tesfaye Henriques and van Zyl, Habtemichael as the main support and Schomber to try and take Chavanne to the cleaners again in the prologue. Looking forward to it!

Doubt we will be troubling the GC favourites here at all. But with Bongiorno and Denifl we will at least be hoping for a stage win. We’ll need a fair bit of luck to accomplish anything, but looking forward.

Insane startlist, probably should've sent Lutsenko elsewhere instead. I absolutely don't like Sagan here Sad

Might have been a good decision not sending Spilak here, might have been bad. We'll never know, but what I do know is that we're hoping to score some stage points, as that's all we should be able of doing. Maksimov hopefully doesn't get a train, Sterbini hopefully overperforms in the time trial for a top-8, Munoz hopefully redeems himself after a weak Vuelta al Tachira as he should try to finish as high as possible in GC/white jersey battle, and Mutsumine hopefully feels a bit wronged to not be in the puncheurs startlist, proving you wrong by scoring a point wherever he can find it.

A lot of hopefully's, but if I'm being realistic I know every point won in this race is a plus Pfft

Thank you for the preview, red, looking forward to the reports. My bet is on Pluchkin for the back to back win Smile

Stage races are kind of fun this year for us because we have zero expectations but still solid riders that are capable of scoring some good results. This is for instance the kind of sprinting field I was hoping for, and I hope for at least a podium from Perera, maybe even more.

And then I hope we'll be a consistent presence in breakaways with Vendrame and Eyob, and maybe even Ndayisenga, who will in all likelihood not be able to compete for a good GC result. If either of those are in a group that makes it to the finish, they're all capable of winning. Plus I would love to see one of them go for the polkadots.

Finally I'm curious if Uwizeyimana can do something here. He's a good time trialist, but so are most of the top favorites as well, so that won't negate his clear deficit in pure climbing and puncheur skills. But he might have an outside shot at the Top 20 or even Top 15 if things go well. Could also easily land outside the Top 30 though. I guess we'll see. Looking forward to this a lot!

roturn
Big hopes in Olivier here. He is well supported so that also the team ranking can give points. From the startlist the podium is possible, top5 wanted, top10 would already be minimum and a bit disappointing.

Obviously pluchkin is the favourite here but he has lost a bit by now.

knockout
First time that we touch the mountains this year and my expectations are high. I think the route and the order of stages should fit Chiarello well so I'm hoping that he can deliver sth like a top 5-8 GC result here. I'd also love to see a strong showing of Tvetcov as that would justify my decision to send him here instead of to the TTT event.

On top of that i have big expectations from the rest of the squad. Starting with the prologue where i have two strong contenders with Chavanne and Stoltz and several further options that could convert their decent prologue into minor scoring with some luck with Navardauskas (76PRL) , Tvetcov (74PRL, GC) and Waersted (74PRL-> U25 jersey contention?).

And Hofstetter is surely an interesting sprinter for the two flat stages. Both are undulating for quite some time with the last (slightly) uphill sections close to the finish so his above average climbing could surely be an interesting asset.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

We are looking to repeat last year's performance - getting lucky with breakaways. Other than that it's going to be impossible to score any decent points here

Mix of team for Itami and the sprints and Carapaz for the Climbs. Carapaz not mentioned on the list of GC favourites could be worrying, but we will see...

Realistically should be able to achieve a top-10 result in al stages bar the last, but seeing as how our first two races have gone I doubt that. Sagan, Lutsenko and Borges all being here is indeed a nightmare.

I love How this race looks! And the start list promises a very interesting battle for the GC. I'll follow it with great interest.
Good luck to every one!

Seems like we will miss Meintjes presence here considering the other teams present here. We knew it of course losing him over the transfer window and replacing him with Carthy.

This race was obviously selected with Meintjes in mind and will be one of his weaker races this year. Even so, we should be in and around the lower area of the top 10 in the GC with a bit of luck.

Good luck people

27th by Uwizeyimana is good, 145th by Ndayisenga less so  But maybe that enables him to attack more, which then would be beneficial.

Results for prologues/TTs continue to be a bit weird. TT stat seems to have had an impact here looking at Chavanne in 12th and especially Stoltz in 32nd, but then again we have Paillot in 15th, Pluchkin in 28th, so ...? Congrats to Xero and Schomber, as well as Gesink and Monsalve (????) for their good GC placements.

Eden95
Weird result, none of the favourites troubling the top-10 is strange. Especially the Evonink duo, super disappointing. Hofer sneaking into 6th is great and makes enough sense with his stat line at least.

Congrats to jandal and thanks for the report!

Time trials and prologues seem to be quite random so far. As a manager of Zmorka and relying on him to remain in PCT, that might not be the best news Pfft

But I'm happy to see Sterbini in fifth today, best result of him in our outfit so far imo. Congratulations to jandal, Schomber is a hero!

Prologues are weird but Carthy lost a little more time than we would have wanted but we're still only 34secs from the leader. I just hope he wont lose unnecessary time on the hill stages.
