Welcome to the 3rd edition of the Tour du Maroc. This is quite a young race on the MG calendar, but it's been part of the PTHC category every year and therefore has hosted some of the best riders on the planet. Going from 9 stages to 8 this year, the concept of the race has not changed much. There are two difficult hilly stages and two mountain stages, and the mountain stages lend themselves to the punchier riders. In addition there are 4 sprint stages that drew some big names in search of one or more stage wins.
With that said let's look at some of the favourites:
| FLA | MON | HIL | RES | REC | ACC | Olivier | 72 | 81 | 76 | 80 | 77 | 71 | Gesink | 71 | 81 | 79 | 77 | 77 | 65 | Wellens | 72 | 82 | 75 | 80 | 76 | 68 | Bennett | 67 | 81 | 76 | 74 | 79 | 73 | Carthy | 71 | 81 | 75 | 76 | 78 | 69 | Godoy | 68 | 79 | 76 | 76 | 77 | 75 | Martin | 68 | 80 | 75 | 75 | 73 | 73 | Oomen | 71 | 80 | 75 | 77 | 78 | 69 | Berhane | 68 | 81 | 75 | 74 | 73 | 68 | Choi | 71 | 80 | 74 | 76 | 79 | 68 | De la Cruz | 69 | 78 | 75 | 76 | 75 | 73 | Amador | 68 | 82 | 73 | 71 | 74 | 69 | Chaves | 70 | 76 | 79 | 73 | 72 | 72 | Konig | 71 | 78 | 74 | 74 | 70 | 65 |
Olivier is the first name on our list. He can climb, he has punch and is resistant. Absolutely no faults with the Dutchman. There are no time-trials here, but that did not dissuade Gesink from coming here. The veteran from Holland is great on the short climbs. Wellens is the best climber here but he can punch a bit as well. Bennett has made a name for himself in these type of races, as he has a great skill set for long and short climbs. Carthy is another very strong rider, with no TTs on the menu, this race makes total sense. Godoy is not the top climber here, but he has the best acceleration. He could surprise others with a well timed attack.
Martin is another experienced rider who's seen and done it all and he can still accelerate with some of the best. Another Dutchman among the favourites is Oomen who is coming off a great performance in Lithuania, so we know he can handle the sharp hills. Berhane and Choi are typical climbers who won't be easy to shake off the wheel. De la Cruz is another who will hope to capitalise on his kick. Amador is a bit more of diesel, so we'll see how he gets on. Chaves is the true puncheur on this group, he could be a dangerman, if the hills prove decisive. And finally Konig has been a solid performer for Adastra in stage races across the season. Another seasoned veteran.
| FLA | HIL | RES | REC | SPR | ACC | Degenkolb | 76 | 69 | 71 | 74 | 84 | 81 | Groenewegen | 73 | 67 | 71 | 85 | 82 | 81 | Lo Cicero | 72 | 64 | 63 | 79 | 84 | 78 | Enger | 73 | 69 | 73 | 77 | 81 | 78 | Van der Sande | 75 | 70 | 73 | 76 | 79 | 79 | Afewerki | 73 | 63 | 70 | 81 | 79 | 80 | Lay | 73 | 60 | 66 | 77 | 79 | 81 | Moser | 72 | 67 | 69 | 76 | 80 | 79 | Nizzolo | 73 | 64 | 67 | 71 | 80 | 79 | Cavendish | 71 | 63 | 68 | 75 | 81 | 78 | Stepniak | 72 | 67 | 70 | 75 | 79 | 79 |
When it comes to sprinting we have a clear #1. It's John Degenkolb who bring a strong team with him. Including last year's points winner Contreras. Groenewegen will be the German's main competitor. He's been off form lately, but his team needs results from him now. Lo Cicero is a real hit and miss sprinter, but if he hits, he can definetely win a stage. Enger is as solid as they come, but is missing a bit of acceleration. Van der Sande will be hoping the few bumps in the road will disturb the other faster sprinters.
Afewerki is another rock solid sprinter who gets his chance in the absense of Holloway and van der Lijke. Lay has a great kick, with he can suprise some people. The two Italians Moser and Nizzolo are very similar, with the latter still trying to get out of his manager's dog house. Cavendish is his last strong year and the Manxman still has it on the right day. Lastly is Stepniak who doesn't always feature, but he just might do it here.

Olivier as big name on that startlist and Groenewegen as top3 sprinter. Also with solid support, which hopefully means big points. I need them a lot and this hopefully works out well. |

Well, this is our last hurrah in the PCT division - our fate is pretty much sealed, so we really have nothing to fight for other than a token points finishes

Now that's a big chance for Aegon - coming along with some pressure of course fingers crossed though (no offense to those, who are fighting against relegation as well)!

I bring a horrible horrible team here, so I guess we’ll get very little. Nizzolo have been crap all season so if he could score 10 points this would be the best race og his season.
The best I Can hope for is for Boily to perform reasonably well, but not mentioned in the preview is often a very bad sign.

Dammit I had written off this race in my expectations to help me prepare for non-promotion... you really had to go and put Bennett 4th favourite didn't you? Happy with that startlist though of course. Since it's more high mountains than medium (with the HI stages looking proper punchy rather than the Japan/Pologne type 5-6km ones Bennett eats for breakfast) I don't put him there but still hopeful about this race now. Of course Bennett could quite easily just fail and finish 28th here as he is known to do occasionally.
Spoiler Still doubt we get that many points, but with de la Cruz the biggest rival for us hopefully we can get some small advantage from this one in our rankings battle

Big, big chance for Aegon! And with that lineup, I can't see them go wrong, as they should be able to bring in a lot of points through especially Olivier, but also Groenewegen if he gets it right on the flat stages.
Best of luck, roturn. I really hope you don't relegate. It's just a pity it means that we'll go down instead
Looking forward to follow the race, eventhough we're not racing. |

Need massive over performances from De la Cruz and Cav to stand a chance of promotion. Fingers crossed and good luck to jandal on the same mission.
Thanks for the preview redordead.

Not sure what to expect. A rider or two in the top 30 would be decent and hopefully we can do something from the breakaway here and there. Potenially a huge race for Aegon this.

It should be a good oportunity for Gesink to end the season on a high note. At least I'm hoping for that.
Thanks for the preview, red!
Good luck everyone!

He would've made the preview if I did a puncheurs only list and he wasn't far off being mentioned, but I don't like making overly long lists.

Don't worry, if there is ever a prologue, I'll make sure not to mention Schomber

Thanks. I hope so as well obviously.
Last time versus Heine, I had a potentially great race as well late in October but failed massively and relegated.
I obviously don`t hope for a repeat.
In the end I think both of our teams shouldn`t go down normally. Likely though both of us went for a risky squad/planning, that now will punish one of us. I went the training instead of additional leader way, which failed once the trained riders didn`t perform well while you went for the double leadership with expensive riders Taaramae/Kwiatkowski, who both did great for you but it hurt the team depth for many other races.
The big What IF comes into play as well now seeing our close to be done huge leader transfer deals last transfers. Potentially had saved both of us. |

Hmmm seems our planning couldn't fit Meintjes in this race despite it fitting us quite well. In hindsight considering his weak performance in Paris - Nice it could bite us here since he would have been a great favourite for us.
Even so we still have Enger as a solid tier 2 sprinter for the 4 flat stages so I hope we won't do too badly on stage points alone, otherwise we don't have too many other chances to score points...

Perfect start. Not easy to best Degenkolb but always nice when you do.
So happy the team followed his train instead of trying to do one crappy themselves as I simply don't have the riders for such.
Normally a sprinter in the lead is no problem for the GC rider. Let's hope this also is the case now. The time gap there makes me slightly concern bit I guess it won't change the AI.
So far Groenewegen had a pretty weak season. Not only in comparison to last year but in general. Having him doing fine here on multiple stages could point wise least to a bit more expected ranking area. |

There should be a MG bet for the AI screwing over roturn's last chance to stay in the pro tour.
Also: congratulations roturn
