February is done for the PT teams. It saw lots of racing including a triple PT clash and the first monument of the year alongside the PT TTT event and two PTHC races, of which Portugal was the first longer one.
Nothing for cobblers though, which means, teams focussing on that terrain might have to wait another month or two for a bigger update.
Let`s start with the triple clash. Paris Nice as a mountain variant this year, Tirreno Adriatico for the puncheurs and Grand Duche as usual as a puncheur classic dividing the top puncheurs of the division.
Making it short. The mountaineous Paris Nice was dominated by Festina. Not only the GC by new top star Lecuisinier but also the sprints by Coquard. Following with already quite a few points home team Air France with Sicard and Bennelong.
Tirreno Adriatico was then won by Bennelong`s Bobridge after some bad performances lately. This is obviously huge for them being one of the top performers in the triple. Aker MOT being best of the rest with Generali or King Power also not too bad neither.
Grand Duche then goes to Evonik with maxed Miguel Angel Lopez while couple other teams didn`t perform here in a race where also climbers showed up a bit more.
In total Festina just takes the triple ahead of Bennelong. Both with a huge performance though and also King Power, Evonik or Air France did very well.
At the bottom an unusual picture as Puma SAP barely is seen that far down.
| Pos | | Team | Total | TA | PN | CdGD | | 1 | | Festina - OAKA | 933 | 205 | 576 | 152 | | 2 | | Bennelong - Mitchelton | 845 | 500 | 300 | 45 | | 3 | | King Power | 633 | 278 | 169 | 186 | | 4 | | Evonik - ELKO | 617 | 120 | 227 | 270 | | 5 | | Air France - KLM | 562 | 202 | 325 | 35 | | 6 | | Team UBS | 495 | 192 | 206 | 97 | | 7 | | Gazelle | 494 | 124 | 194 | 176 | | 8 | | Aker - MOT | 487 | 377 | 63 | 47 | | 9 | | Moser - Sygic | 472 | 75 | 238 | 159 | | 10 | | Generali | 465 | 312 | 99 | 54 | | 11 | | eBuddy | 433 | 179 | 176 | 78 | | 12 | | ISA - Hexacta | 428 | 202 | 165 | 61 | | 13 | | Aegon - Peroni | 414 | 84 | 182 | 148 | | 14 | | Rakuten Pro Cycling | 403 | 195 | 137 | 71 | | 15 | | EA Vesuvio | 379 | 208 | 120 | 51 | | 16 | | Isostar - Specialized | 371 | 140 | 127 | 104 | | 17 | | Volvo acc. by Spotify | 352 | 72 | 250 | 30 | | 18 | | cycleYorkshire | 300 | 108 | 135 | 57 | | 19 | | Team Tinkoff - La Datcha | 286 | 113 | 125 | 48 | | 20 | | Indosat Ooredoo | 223 | 50 | 138 | 35 | | 21 | | Grieg-Maersk | 221 | 121 | 65 | 35 | | 22 | | Team Puma - SAP | 219 | 33 | 117 | 69 |
The rest of the month is seperated. First teams that did well in Milan San Remo such as ISA or Grieg, which are big points in a potential relegation fight and then points from the TTT, where again Grieg coming out well with Tinkoff next.
Hallstatt and Portugal then is seperated with not all teams included. Hallstatt as smaller classic was taken by Air France with Aker and Festina doing okay as well, while Portugal obviously delivers quite a few more race days for some teams. Evonik, cycleYorkshire or Generali all with decent points from there.

In total the following picture appears post February.
Festina dominates by the look of it. They have created a gap already, which is even more impressive seeing that they have less race days than the closest rivals by not participating in Portugal!
Evonik is best of the rest but it`s a lot closer then with Bennelong and Moser also not far behind. Those three all had been in Portugal though, while behind EA Vesuvio, Air France and ISA all are doing well without this race as well.
The amount of teams passing the 1000 points so far are 12 teams with Aegon being hte first below that line. It`s actually super close at the bottom as down to the relegation zone it`s less than 100 points. Right now last years winner Gazelle sitting at that first relegation spot! cycleYorkshire, Tinkoff and Volvo following but not too much of a gap yet while Indosat in last is looking dangerously gapped already. In especially as they have used the most race days!
Same for Gazelle though at 42 with also cycleYorkshire and maybe Generali just ahead having a low PpRD.

Rider wise several changes as expected early on. Lecuisinier takes the top now. He did well in several races yet including the domination in Paris Nice. Angel Lopez already showing up big time in 2nd ahead of Degenkolb as best sprinter after his most recent MSR win.
Kwiatkowski was a big gain for Aker so far and his training worked well while Sicard is doing his usual things for Air France.
Bobrdige as best pure puncheur probably is a good sign for Bennelong after last year while Holloway is down to 7th after his January performance.
Coquard, Ponzi and Grosu finish the top10 while Phinney in 11th, though already have shown to be one of the strongest this year and clearly has room to improve.

February really was a month to forget for my team and hopefully not repeating too often.
Lots of top favourites and top5-10 favourites that failed a lot.
De Bie in Grand Duche
Olivier in Hallstatt
Groenewegen in both MSR and Paris Nice
Even Tirreno imo wasn`t a good race for me with Zardini on an anonymous 22nd or something, but when not having a leader, they should have been more active with better suited riders in the breakaways, which unfortunately didn`t work that well except for one stage.
On a positive Olivier in Paris Nice GC without stage results though and Toupalik`s 3rd on one stage. |

Things are looking pretty good so far. Obviously the upcoming 2 months will hardly provide any points so it is nice to have a good cushin to fall back on, and in terms of the Top 5 we have a solid lead over Gazelle, Generali, Isostar and Puma whom I all expect to be somewhere around/over us in the end.
Seeing Evonik this close is not really comforting though, despite they have ridden Portugal. Moser also pretty well placed, just like Air France.
I am really happy to see ISA in 7th, knowing they will drop, they too have a fair gap to teams that must be expected in the relegation battle. Some of them are already there (most of them to be fair). Together with Bennelong (who seems to have finally hit a bit of "Jack"pot and thus should go clear) they are easily the best performing teams that could end up in danger.
Thanks for the update. It is nice to see our team ranked top for the first time in a very long time.

Had hoped for more from P-N, but all in all it was a good month for us with the performances in the TTT and MSR. I think we are in a good spot going into the cobbles season, where hopefully Wisniowski can drag us a few spots up.
Festina looking extremly good at the top there.
Thanks for the update, roturn!

Bad start of the season. There were some modest highlights, but they were overshadowed by underperformances. 22 PpRD is way too low.
Hope Teunissen can turn it around in the upcoming cobble races.

Overall a pretty solid month. A couple of underperformances by our long standing leaders while our depth probably slightly overperformed while Lopez is as great as hoped early on.
Lopez saved our a** early on as thr only outright leader to properly perform so far. Skujins probably a bit below expectations while Van Stayen is only our 7th scorer at this point. What sounds like a desaster, is obviously nott great but it is also a testament for how good our team depth scores this year. Dzamastagic, Vosekalns, Stoltz, Chavanne are all ahead of him while Budenieks and Tvetcov also sit in the top 100 rn. Chiarello as 106th is only tenth best within the team and that depth speaks for itself.
Being 2nd already is pretty good although we already had quite a few leaders RD and we had to be in a similar position already.
Festina having a 450 point gap despite 7 less pthc race days is not good though they should be in a similar situation in terms of used leaders race days. Still that gap is a bit larger than expected at this point and could cover our cobbles scoring advantage.
Only having 130 points on Moser isnt ideal either - with the classics season about to start we might have to chase them down later if Bewley and Sagan develop like in past seasons.
Luckily we have a bit of a cussion towards Puma, Gazelle, Generali and Isostar which is much needed considering some of them might score huge during GT season.
In the bottom half, it is nice to see Grieg over the line despite no cobbles yet. Id love to see the Pedersen/Wisniowski experiment to work out and its great that the first points are ticking in outside of their main terrain.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Yeah, me too
Just checked last year and we are 137 points ahead from the second update then, and that was including Omloop Het Nieuwsblad (69 points) and Strada Appa Antica (288 points). That is really a big encouragement for us, so I'm increasingly optimistic going into the cobbles. Pedersen might be our most expensive Dane, but Würtz and Kragh have also really stepped up after maxing prior to this season.

Lecuisinier have just 2 races left though, and he scored 1/3 of our points so far.

Given some rather unspectacular results lately, being still in the top 10 is good, but I guess that is more due to the high number of race days we had compared to other teams.
Hopefully Gerts can bring in some good points from the cobbles, while Boswell and Dombrowski will start performing better.

Not an amazing first couple months for us, but they were not bad either. A few below average performances were evened out by surprisingly good ones by my team - TA & Hallstatt. From next month on is where our season will really be decided. Thanks forthe in depth update roturn!

Thanks for the update, interesting to see Festina take a sizeable early lead. Clearly Ponzi is carrying the team so far. Amador with a discouraging under-performance at Paris Nice was pretty worrying, but Reichenbach has done okay and Schelling did better than expected.

Nice picture so far
Bobridge probably won't keep this scoring level, but he already provided a nice boost to our top-10 goal and our production has been great most recently. If he can do a couple of other stage races in a similar fashion, it could become a really nice season for us. Morton should add some points in his three remaining races and also Haig/Howard will add something later. When Tom David can be some kind of a factor in the cobbles, I'm optimistic for the first ever top-10. Still a long way to go though. But it's shaping up nicely at this point.

It's great to see that we were third best scoring team in the triple header only behind the two winners of the stage races. Considering the way my team is built we had to do well here but I'd say that in general we did a little bit better than expected and it cancels out the very poor start of the season. So we are at around were we have to be at this point of the season.
Looking at the pprd ranking it doesn't look so good but it was too be expected that Portugal would pull us down here. We did even worse than we should've but at least it is good to have that race out of the way already. Future PTHC races will be more suiting to my team! |

We were expectedly nowhere in PN and TA, Demare failed in Grand-Duché, Herklotz failed in Hallstatt, and only our great TTT saves us from falling down even further here.
The good news is that both Herklotz and Demare have only ridden 4 race days so far and Arndt just 2, the bad news is that the upcoming races will have to come with some surprises to see us go into their part of the season anywhere close to where we are at the moment.
Any cobbled race is basically a 0-pointer for us beyond finishing it, and there are four of them in our next 7 races.
This means we need a solid Praha from our now-proven TT squad, we need to find a way to score in Colombia, and Demare needs to get as close to repeating his 2018 win in Nederland as possible.
Although, to repeat what I always say, regardless of our current roster and rankings position:
As long as we're not in relegation danger, I have to be happy! This is a very select group of teams, and just being among them is good enough.

Not worried yet. We should be about 100 points higher up the rankings, if Kinoshita hadn't dropped the ball on the final decisive stage at Tirreno, and only one of a bakers dozen that didn't ride either Portugal or Halstatt.
5th to 18th sitll insanely close, so hard to judge how anyone will finish this early from that group imo.
We are getting into the part of the season where Kinoshita will be riding a lot though, so the next stretch will need to see us climb up the rankings, or it'll be relegation I feel.

Not such a fun month as January here. Still, 5th is a nice position to end February in - although it's all still very close in there.

All in all, this is an okayish start for us. We'll need Taaramäe to step up, though and improve in the mountains compared to his East Java performance. If he doesn't we'll struggle to survive, seeing how close it is. GT scorings will be decisive this season too for us if we're going to stay safe seeing how close we're with a lot of teams in flat/hilly/shorter stage races in total, which is also before we hit the cobbles and score very little points.
Thank you for the update, roturn! As others write, very impressive start from Festina. That's quite a gap after only two months! |
