Quiet Forums? Sign of a poor game?
whitevestblueshorts
I know this is new, but is the lack of forum posts a concern in terms of the game not actually improving?

I want to get the game but feel like I could be buying into a minefield, as someone who is more of a casual fan...

I know its not the be all and end all, but I come here in the belief its the go to forum to get impressions... and there are barely any in 2 days of the game releasing.

Should I be worried!?

I think it's more of a marketing issue seeing as I didn't even realise it was out yet until I saw your post.

The run up to release this year has been eerily quiet, Previously there's been a lot more mentioned on here, there just seemed to be a lot more drip feeding from Cyanide and I guess the lack of real racing and events tied to it for them to generate hype for the game at haven't helped.

I'm just use to screenshots of the 3d races, then a month or so later some menu and career mode screenshots, maybe an interview with a dev or at least some announcement of changes.

This year I haven't seen any of that stuff.

It has more to do with forums becoming less active in general. On discord, YouTube and Twitter there is lots of news, but I feel like the new developers are trying to “get with the times” a bit more and recognize that they can reach more of their target audience on those platforms. Especially Steam is a platform that has caused this shift too.
Apart from bugs, I’ve heard this is a good game this year, as the AI is more aggressive (read: unpredictable) meaning x8-ing until the last 20 Kms isn’t the norm anymore. So I wouldn’t correlate low activity here to it being a bad game.

This forum has a strong user base of longtime PCM players and most of us wait a few weeks to buy the game as often PCM at launch can be quite full of bugs so most of us are probably holding off for a bit as well

Yeah, the shift away from forums is just a sad reality, and it's the real reason why there is not much PCM 20 activity here. There are growing (or at least shifting) communities on those other platforms. It's a shame because I think a forum is much more suited to actually creating and organizing substantive user content, diverse, inventive DB's, and a sense of real community. Those things are a lot tougher to produce and distribute on those platforms. For instance, The Steam Workshop is certainly convenient for certain things, but the amount and diversity of content on there is nowhere near what Daily had at its peak. However, those platforms are much more immediate and they are the technology and media that is present now. They reach the most people, and so that's what Cyanide is going to market to.

I don't think a site like Daily will ever be "the place" to go for PCM news and hype leading up to launch again, even if next year's version is the greatest game ever made.

Edit: That being said, I don't know the sales numbers, but I do know the online portion of the game definitely has less activity than it used to. There were still regular PCM 11 lobbies well into 2013-2014, until they shut down the mode. Whenever I've checked PCM 18 the last few months, there's usually no one, and never more than one lobby. And that's a game that was only one year removed until this week, during a pandemic quarantine. So maybe there actually is just generally less interest in the game these days.

I completely agree. On Steam, Youtube, Discord I don't write anything as these platforms are not suitable for full communicating with like-minded people.

Thanks! I've been playing a lot during this quarantine and the forum has some interesting topics. Shame it is not very active.

Hello and welcome! Unfortunately many people ran off to common platforms, but anyway there are a lot of true PCM fans here.

Thanks for the replies. I might give it a go, its 20 quid so not a huge outlay if I do lose interest.

I always worry when popular fan forums are either moaning or worse, dead quiet about the game. Lets hope I dont get my fingers burned.

Ah, yes, about main topic in this thread Grin

Every year I prefer to wait a little, cause about 10 years now Cyanide release pretty raw games. Some PCM fans write this time AI was improved (at last) and I hope it will be something similar to PCM 2006 or at least PCM 2011. But I think it's early to predictions anyway, so I'm waiting for further reviews.

I usually get hyped for PCM when the real cycling is exciting, with the lack of that I reckon many people just have less urge to manage their own team

Agree with some other users, quiet forum means dying forum, not necessarily the game itself.

That's not true cause I often visit a forum of transport games where there're about 3-5 users online at the same time for already 5-7 years but that's not important as they are very friendly and heartwarming people. And I see that PCMdaily is the same. So few people do not mean the forum is dying.

Tbh I don't really care about what changes happens the game, it feels pretty much like it always have, with some changes of course. I just buy the game every 2nd year, to make sure there's real life databases to play with and there's usually dbs for 2 seasons per game. Also the cycling world has been dormant because of this virus and the same excitement for this season might not be there for others

Well, as you say, we have a good core of active, caring members still, so "dying" might be a bit extreme. However, it definitely has been on the decline. There is not nearly as much activity and members as there were in the first few years after I joined. There is still a strong core, but each year a few more people move on, and we no longer have many new members joining to fill the void. In things like the Man-Game, that is most apparent. After years of expansion and denying dozens of applications out of necessity, we now scramble to figure out how to fill all the divisions each year.

It's hard for me to see the forum continuing indefinitely in this state. I don't think it's going to disappear tomorrow, but over the next decade it will if the trends don't change.

Game gets boring and is just an updated DB from the previous year for a few years now => less people plating => less people here => less people working on the daily DB => game gets even more boring. It'll be hard to get out of this circle without major game improvements. But as said above, it seems they're not even advertising this year so it might be the end of the game and then the forum will follow.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

In terms of game marketing there has been a change in the last two years. Focus definitely put out pre-release screens and quite early in the year, along with an early year beta. But in 2018 Cyanide was sold on. I imagine some of you are not following the new publisher anymore either.
BigBen/Nacon have a different approach, where the beta itself seems to be coming later, and they have moved away from early screens to a late but more intense influencer based campaign. (i think this is a bad move but won't go into detail here)

If you've been looking out for information, it has been appearing in the last couple of weeks before release. But that broader, slow burn, ad campaign doesn't happen anymore. Even harder to make noise about PCM20 when there is not Tour to market it with.

Another reason, i saw very little info anywhere, about making a pre-order for PCM20. The Daily affiliate link only went up -1day to release, in the past we've seen that earlier, and at a wider level i've seen pre-order ads a good few weeks ahead of time. But none of those have appeared this year or last. That in turn has a knock on where people can't pre-load the game or get on it first thing in the morning, so first play comes late on release day or later compared to a few years ago where we'd be playing before breakfast.

Anyway, i could go on and on about the state of PCM in the modern game market (namely about it's pricing vs lack of official lisencing, and lack of significant innovation). And i could go on and on about the state of modern game communities too. But we've done this for the last few years.
Although i'm not an Admin i feel i can be a lot more honest about PCM now Pfft
