Scandinavia Open Road Race
History
| Year | Winner | Team | | 2018 | Simone Ponzi | Hugo Boss | | 2017 | Toms Skujins | Evonik - ELKO | | 2016 | Mohamed Shawal Anuar Aziz | Indosat - ANZ | | 2015 | Jay McCarthy | Bank of Ireland - Irish Cycling | | 2014 | Cesare Di Maggio | Venchi - Ferranti | | 2013 | Chris Froome | Jaguar - Eritel | | 2011 | Tomas Vaitkus | Team Telenor-SAS | | 2010 | Luke Rowe | Wiggle Pro Cycling Team | | 2009 | Martijn Maaskant | LA/MSS/PEARL JAM |
The tenth anniversary edition of the Scandinavia Open Road Race, held since 2009 with the exception of 2012. For the first eight editions it was a one day race with varying profiles, last year it became a three day event and we stick to that format this year. It was Ponzi who won all three stages, but without him we will see different winners. In the PTHC division we see a mix of ProTour and ProContinental teams, and the startlist contains many fabulous names.
Profiles

We open the race with a climbing prologue, a short punch up a hill. The next two stages are both hilly with slightly uphill finishes. It is clear one has to climb well to be a contender in this race.
Startlist

| Puncheurs | MO | HL | PRL | Climbers/Prologue | MO | HL | PRL | Bobridge | 69 | 83 | 77 | Yates | 79 | 76 | 71 | Skujins | 70 | 83 | 59 | Oomen | 78 | 74 | 75 | Bakelants | 74 | 83 | 65 | Atapuma | 78 | 73 | 62 | Mohoric | 71 | 83 | 64 | Jaramillo | 77 | 75 | 62 | Gastauer | 71 | 82 | 66 | Goos | 77 | 74 | 76 | Di Maggio | 65 | 82 | 62 | Parra Bustamente | 77 | 74 | 66 | Kelderman | 71 | 82 | 70 | Grmay | 77 | 74 | 65 | Van Garderen | 72 | 82 | 69 | Boily | 76 | 78 | 61 | Schreurs | 69 | 81 | 66 | Henao | 76 | 76 | 64 | McCarthy | 67 | 81 | 58 | Destribois | 76 | 75 | 67 | Koretzky | 71 | 81 | 61 | Badilatti | 76 | 75 | 65 | Vogt | 62 | 80 | 66 | Augustyn | 76 | 74 | 70 | Betancourt | 73 | 80 | 59 | Frankiny | 76 | 74 | 67 | Waeytens | 71 | 80 | 65 | Laengen | 76 | 73 | 77 | Zaini | 66 | 80 | 61 | Cataldo | 76 | 73 | 67 | Prevar | 71 | 80 | 62 | Sepulveda | 75 | 77 | 76 | Gautier | 68 | 80 | 64 | Liphongyu | 75 | 72 | 73 | Paulinho | 75 | 79 | 64 | Ahmad Zamri | 75 | 70 | 75 | Reichenbach | 73 | 79 | 67 | Dennis | 74 | 75 | 81 | Chernetskiy | 71 | 79 | 66 | Abreu | 73 | 73 | 75 |
Predicting a winner is hard. Under normal circumstances a puncheur would be favorite but most of them are not that well-equipped for the prologue, where they will lose valuable time. On the other hand, most prologue specialists cannot climb that well, and those who do are usually behind puncheurs in their team's pecking order.
Of the puncheurs, Bobridge is the best on the prologue, but not great as climbing. His teammate Dennis is the better climber, but a worse puncheur. Two horses to bet on for Bennelong.
Kelderman is a bit worse but still decent on a prologue, but more importantly a better climber. He has unquestioned leader of team Philips.
Farfetch also comes with two contenders, McCarthy as puncheur Yates as climber. With Yates not being a bad puncheur either, leadership could be decided already, but McCarthy is a former winner.
A same scenario for EA Vesuvio, with Gastauer and Goos. Goos will be ahead after stage one, but will that be the case at the end of the stage.
ISA even going for three leaders: Betancourt the puncheur, Boily the climber and Sepulveda the mix. Rivalry which should not descent into working against each other.
Not naming recent Fleche Wallone and Liege - Bastogne - Liege winner Bakelants as favorite would be criminal, but he has to limit his loss on stage one or go mental on stages two and three.
Other puncheurs on the startlist are Mohoric, Skujins (winner two years ago), Van Garderen, Di Maggio (winner five years ago), Koretzky and Schreurs. For some of them, climbing will be the biggest issue.
Further favorites for the first stage are Laengen, Oomen, Ahmad Zamri, Liphongyu and Polanc. I've forgone mentioning the pure specialists such as Chavanne and Fiedler because the climb is likely too heavy for them.

Not expecting much at all here, might be nice if Dyrnes can do something given it's a home race or thereabouts for him but no pressure provided we can get a couple of Bazhkou, Dyrnes, Grmay or Areruya doing something. Please bring back the profile Luke Rowe won on (also Jesus why was Rowe so good at 19? )
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

We probably should go for Oomen instead of Waeytens. Don't disappoint me, AI!
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Please please don't fuck this up. Thinking about it I most likely should've just brought Keizer here instead of the Vuelta...

Originally planned to bring Cattaneo here, but the clash with the Vuelta left me with a planning challenge. So decided to send Yates as he had a few RDs to spare, and it looks like that gamble might actually pay off considering what we now know about PCM18, which would be a nice surprise! |

It will be interesting to see if we can get some points out of this one or not, Muhlberger and Wahyudi will likely be leading us but are far from the top guys.

This always looks like a cool race No expectations for our team here, we'll just enjoy the ride.
The hills looks kind of soft here, which must give hope to the puncheurs as well, if not, Yates looks like a very serious contender. |

Would have loved the prologue to be flat... A top 30 from Stake Laengen and some breaks would be a good race, I guess.

Could this finally be the race where our designated leader has a chance to live up to his stats?

Great to have Peeter Tarvis on the team, otherwise Mohoric would've finished last of our team. Good team performance though and a very interesting result. Dennis actually seems to be a very reasonable winner, I wouldn't have guessed PCM being that reasonable on this stage

Wow, crazy good prologue from our riders with three of them in the top 30
That means we've already exceeded expectations. Now let's hope we can do a brilliant race and be represented in one breakaway too. |

Good job Oomen, let's see how far this will get you.
Zico, let's try to support the youngster, shall we?

Bobridge looks hopeless for those profiles anyway, so it's good that Dennis beats him by a mile and ofc it's great to get a stage win from this race, too. Not too optimistic for the remaining two stages though, as Bobridge could seriously suffer and Dennis ain't too special overall. At least he already saved us a couple of races, where Bobridge became a no-show this year..

Interesting result! Very happy with how good Stake Laengen managed to ride. Let's hope for two stages with small gaps now...

Decent start. Hopefully, Kelderman can take advantage in the hills now.

Well, that's obviously great! Bobridge finally performs in a hilly stage, didn't see that coming. Losing the GC lead with Dennis doesn't really hurt, as he at least did well to hang on in this group, too. Not sure how selective the final stage will be, but with two stage wins already bagged, it's already a good race for us. Now at least one of Dennis and Bobridge still needs to secure a good GC result, too, though. Bobridge definitely needs to score sooner than later, so he did just the right things today.
