Strada Appia Antica Preview
For the past five years, there has been only one name etched on the trophy of this race. That name is the man himself, Sam Bewley. He has kept this race under his iron-grip in that interval, having finished second to Cancellara six years earlier! With the first edition of this race having been held in the erstwhile CDiv2, Bewley has never finished this race below 2nd whenever he has participated and this race has only seen three winners in it's seven year history!
The course itself remains the same; the first three quarters of the race is a tough hilly section with two laps of a circuit which includes six climbs. Pure cobbles specialists are sure to be tested in this section, and they will be hoping to keep the pace relatively mild. After navigating the hills, the riders will tackle two huge sections of hard cobbles, which will definitely weed out the able from the pretenders. Can anyone really challenge the mighty New Zealander on these roads this time?
| HIL | STA | RES | COB | ACC | Bewley | 71 | 78 | 76 | 83 | 83 | Trentin | 74 | 76 | 71 | 81 | 76 | Senechal | 67 | 79 | 74 | 82 | 74 | Theuns | 74 | 76 | 73 | 80 | 76 | Vanbilsen | 69 | 80 | 74 | 80 | 71 | Van Avermaet | 74 | 75 | 72 | 80 | 75 | Polanc | 73 | 78 | 73 | 78 | 75 | Wisniowski | 71 | 75 | 76 | 81 | 76 | Gerts | 78 | 76 | 80 | 78 | 70 | David | 75 | 76 | 74 | 78 | 73 | Blythe | 66 | 76 | 71 | 82 | 73 | Kamyshev | 65 | 81 | 75 | 82 | 60 |
Sam Bewley is back to defend his five-peat and win an unprecedented six consecutive races. Like every cobbles race in the last five years or so, he starts as the top favourite.
Trentin and Theuns will be looking at their climbing advantage to keep fresh before reaching the cobbles. They are genuine contenders for the podium, with Theuns already having beaten the odds earlier this season.
Senechal and Vanbilsen, the latter part of wildcard outfit Lierse, will be hoping to use their superior energy stats to make an impact at the front. Both are significantly weaker than their previously mentioned opposition on the hills, and so will need all the support they can get from their teams.
The weakening Van Avermaet and the improving Wisniowski make up the next duo battling for the podium. This race is tailor-made for their combination of abilities and they too are genuine contenders for a podium placing.
Up-and-comer Polanc will be looking to punch above his weight as his unique combination of skills should allow him to attack when least expected.
Gerts and David are the two best riders while going uphill among the favourites, and they should be looking at making a dent on their rivals' ambitions in the hilly section of the race.
Blythe and Kamyshev are weaker on the climbs, and thus are only considered as Top 10 potential despite their high cobbles ability.
| HIL | STA | RES | COB | ACC | Daniel | 69 | 76 | 76 | 80 | 72 | Sulimov | 70 | 77 | 71 | 79 | 71 | Altur | 70 | 75 | 70 | 81 | 68 | Teunissen | 66 | 77 | 73 | 81 | 69 | Vanmarcke | 66 | 77 | 72 | 80 | 72 | Kristoff | 68 | 75 | 71 | 78 | 79 | Gaday | 74 | 74 | 71 | 76 | 73 | Pedersen | 68 | 76 | 79 | 77 | 75 | Benoot | 77 | 74 | 74 | 75 | 71 | Ringheim | 67 | 75 | 71 | 78 | 75 | Potts | 74 | 74 | 75 | 76 | 71 | Zhupa | 67 | 78 | 74 | 77 | 68 | Schoonbroodt | 75 | 75 | 73 | 74 | 72 | Kruijswijk | 72 | 76 | 73 | 74 | 75 | Declerq | 73 | 73 | 71 | 77 | 67 | Boros | 73 | 73 | 69 | 77 | 66 | Per | 70 | 72 | 74 | 77 | 74 |
Despite being classified as outsiders in this, there is some serious Northern Classics riding ability among those mentioned in the above table. Daniel, Vanmarcke, Teunissen and Altur are very strong on the stones, while the likes of Benoot and Kristoff can never be counted out.

Back on the cobbles! Hopefully Wisniowski can be close to the podium, but many strong hilly riders here as well, so will be interesting to see how the race will go.

A good test for Vanbilsen's 50 MO. Good thing there's no points on the line though.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

This is going to be an interesting watch for sure. Going to look forward to seeing how selective the hills will be.

Very much looking forward to this. Best race all season for the duo of Polanc and Per, let's go!

That's it Bewley, take your chance whilst you don't have to face Danny yet

Declerq and Cavagna should like this the most out of all cobbled classics, so I hope they will show a decent effort.
We got 13th here last year, that would be amazing to repeat or end up with a similar points total.
Surely this will be very intriguing to watch up front, with MO playing a role for the very first time in a race like this. Unfortunately that favors Bewley even more...

After the podium in Omloop we go here with no expectations, mainly because of the first part of the course, that is unknown how Vanmarcke will survive it. If he does, anything can happen, as he's shown some love for getting great results in deep fields

I hope GVA and Kristoff can actually pull of something here. Our season will depend on results in these kinds of races. Thanks for the preview!

What a tough race! Of course super happy to see Wisniowski winning and continuing to really be on the offensive in the classics this season. Bewley probably the deserved winner given the late puncture, but that's cycling, I guess.
Also a really good ride by Ringheim, so all in all, a great race for us. I was fearing the hills took too much out of a rider like Wisniowski, but I guess he managed to survive and then just a little bit better on the cobbles then the hillier guys like Benoot, Theuns and Gerts.
Thanks for a great report, Abhishek!

Well that was even worse as expected. Roma Maxima has a similar problem, so I don't think Vanbilsen can repeat his win from last year.
Great win for Wisniowski!

What a disgrace this race was. I cant be sour with Blythe as the hills damage his chances but whatever the game did to GVA is game breaking. No excuses for that.

Declerq not even anywhere close to being in the mix, that's disappointing.
Dunne and Cavagna in the Top 50 at least makes this 15 points above minimum so we're only talking 15-30 points less than I hoped for, but lesser riders ended up far in front.
Dunne definitely liked the race though, and also a little shoutout to three more riders in the Top 70.
Good to see Meiler giving it a try, he was just not quite suited enough to the first part to get much out of it. We'll get you there, buddy!
Great to watch Bewley get beaten, Wisniowski with the first of many more to come once his reign ends for good. Thanks for managing to keep track of this crazy race Abhishek!

Mountains. In this game, these are mountains.
(not that I disagree entirely)

Entertaining racing. The whole race played out perfectly, and two in the Top10 is fantastic. A shame for Greggy though :/

That went pretty well for Altur, and very well for Grashev who continues to defy all expectation even at the highest level! The man is a mini-legend and a hugely underrated performer over the last 5 seasons. And Kek got himself out front as well. All in all, pretty decent day out really. Could do with some more of these

Great ride by Teunissen! He lost some time in the climbing section but quickly dragged himself back to the front of the race. Him being the only person capable of following Bewley was a great moment.
Also amazing job by Wisniowski to win this. Congrats to Grieg!
