The ninth edition of Argentina's prime cycling race: Tour de San Luis. The race once again attracts some big names from the continental division, where it is rated as C2. Anthony Roux from Xero won last year's event and while his team is back, he is not allowed to race due to restrictions on PCT riders. In fact, all former winners and the entire top ten of last edition are not present, so we will see some new names on the history sheet.

Profiles

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/profiles/c2_sanluis.jpg

The route remained unchanged from last year, with the same stages in the San Luis area hosting the riders this year. We start off with a prologue around San Luis followed by a flat stage to Villa Mercedes. Then the riders are served with two consequtive hilly stages, one with an uphill and one with a downhill arrival. Stage five is a short time trial around Villa Mercedes, after which there are two more hilly stages with a steep climb at the end. The final stage brings the riders back to San Luis, where the race will finish after some local laps.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vad.png Gautier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Zaini are the best puncheurs on paper in the race. Both lack time trial skills, which means they have to gain extra time on the hilly stages.

Tour of Slovenie winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Meyer shows he is somewhat capable of handling time trials there. This race has more hills and less individual kilometers, so this route might even be more suited to him.

Riders like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Ben Nasser, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Edmondson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Serry should not be underestimated. If the aforementioned trio looks to much towards each other they might get away and go for glory themselves.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kul.png Vanendert and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Venter participate for PCT teams Kulczyk and Xero, and can use this race as opportunity to get a leadership role they wouldn't normally get in higher categorized races.

The best hybrid in the race also comes from Xero: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Bazhkou. The Belarussian will have to limit his loss in the hills before making up time in the time trials.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Zoidl the highest placed rider from last year (12th) participating again, and looking to improve his result with his decent combination of skills. Similar rider looking for a top ten or even better are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Gunman and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ccr.png Gonzalez Cortes, though there might be too few time trial kilometers to compensate.

There is one clear favourite for the opening prologue: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Chavanne. He is a pure prologue specialist, the shorter stuff is really his cup of tea. He does not like longer time trials, or hills though, so his period in the leader's jersey will be short-lasted.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xwa.png Rabitsch rides for an amateur team, but that doesn't mean he'll have no chance whatsoever. He has a good prologue and a good hill stat. If only his longer time trials were better he would be a serious GC contender.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cpl.png Sterobo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Johansson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_csd.png Christian go into the second time trial as favourites, with an outside chance for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_epc.png Bookwalter and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_teb.png Bouet.

Many sprinters also made the trip down here, and will likely have two stages to contend. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_esc.png Thorsen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Guillén have trouble going over the hills, so maybe they won't have the energy for a sprint at the end.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_xfc.png Kip and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Kruopis are two riders with a good prologue, and if they win stage two the leader's jersey might be theirs for a day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_emo.png Vanoverschelde, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_spr.png Salleh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_sct.png Mezgec, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ccr.png Colbrelli, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnz.png Von Hoff. There are so many contenders but only two stages to divide amongst them.

Didn't have enough RDs to bring MAL or Siskevicius here...just hoping Dzervus or Kruopis can bring home some points

Hoping for Gunman to have a good race and notable result here. Though he may stay in a supporting role for Edmondson.. Meyer coming off a nice victory and he should do well here, too. This TT advantage over Gautier should be crucial, but it all depends on the gaps in the queen stage.

Thanks for the preview! And oh, also cheering for Von Hoff! Basically, I'm cheering for BNZ Grin

Maybe a breakaway or Guillen sprint stage win, no chances for GC though Pfft

Two contrasting riders here for me as Venter is a completely terrible time triallist and Bazhkou the best above 70 hill Pfft A top 10 and 15 was our goal before seeing the startlist, which is as expected here really. Who knows with this race, if you're good enough the TT makes no difference Pfft

Hope Bazhkou can do what he did in Ukraine and be top 5 in the hills anyway in a much harder startlist than this, but it's unreasonable to expect that over four days. If he does well on those stages and they aren't so selective a top 5 is possible, otherwise he could go down the rankings. Hope for a spirited defence of our GC win here last year anyway - such a shame Roux wasn't allowed in Sad

Also have Davison and MTK who could gain depth points with a great race, plus our stagiaires making their team debuts and Areruya here for what is hopefully his first and last CT race (unless we take him to one next year I suppose) Pfft Would love him to go for breakaways as he has nice stats for it at this level, especially as Bazhkou and Venter don't look like top favourites.

Thanks for a nice preview Marco Smile

The TT'ing wont help (wonder why Pökälä isn't here) but obviously the goal is for Gautier to tear things apart.

Really keen for This one!! Edmondson is in a great position!!

Von Hoff might do well in the sprints! Hoping for a good race!

Decent for Stan, only Gunnar gaining time so an expected start. Bring on the hills - but not too much Pfft

Pretty good start from Kip... Not very strong from Mygind however.

I have to cross everything possible for Kip to win stage 2 and take the leaders jersey. That is how we can come away with something here...

Kip and Tleubayev are quite consistent prologue performers, if my mind doesn't trick me right now. Wouldn't be surprised, if Kip does something of note here.

Gunman looked strong for a while, a decent result eventually. Chavanne with his next prologue win. A nice rider to have on this level Smile

Areruya Grin Awesome to grab the KOM lead for our neo pro! Nice for Scotson (and presumably Areruya too) to have a crack at the break Smile

Okay start for our guys here in Argentina. Sterobo still with a good 3rd place. I am really curious about Zaini's form though. He will be vital for us!

Thanks for the awesome preview and the good reports Marcovdw! Smile

Peloton fail! Nice unexpected results for those guys surviving the break though.

Not a bad start. 2 top tens isn’t too bad. Let’s keep it up!

sammyt93
Gabby continuing to maximise his points every race is nice to see, he's holding on after the first stage a lot more often and for longer than I expected pre season and really being an x factor in our attempt to chase down a promotion spot.

It makes up for us not making the catch and Salleh missing out on the stage win.

jandal7
Wow, Areruya is a natural at this - can’t wait for next year with lvl3 stats great for mountainous KOM chasing GrinGrin If he takes this to the end that should be a nice points haul. Hope Bazhkou can find his way to the top 10, not an awful start here. Venter dissspointing but Davison is doing ok. Congrats sutty on a nice stage win to kick off Meyer’s campaign - the favourite off to a great start.

So that's the deal sealed for Meyer?

Solid from Gautier but hopefully this will be another race where he only gets better the further in we get.

Cool to see Kaislavuo in the break for his amateur team
