Man-Game GT Watch 2018

Yes, it's finally here! Grin

First off some DO's and DONT's, so please pay attention:

1. Discussion of ToA is EDIT: no longer off-limits.

2. As was the case last season, riders must be nominated by their manager to be considered for any of the Award categories listed below.

3. Please note the preferred format at the end of this post for presenting teams attending GT events if you wish to divulge such information ahead of the event (even if just copying a press-release from your HQ, updating for the format helps, thanks!).

4. There is no pressure or expectation that managers need/have to divulge their GT line-ups, or particular race appearances; this thread is meant as an early season aid to discussion between those interested in doing so. Participation is voluntary, but please avoid spreading any dis-information! Hopefully if nothing else, it helps drive some of the Skype chat/banter back here onto the forum Smile

With that out of the way, let us proceed!

Awards categories and nomination confirmations

For the 2017 season, three non-MGUCI affiliated Awards were launched to celebrate outstanding achievement by riders in the field of Grand Tour racing. The basic rules and a running list of nominees will be presented/maintained here.

First up we have the Geminiani-Nencini Award. The most basic requirment of this award is that any nominee must both start and complete all 3 PT GT's in the calendar year. However, beyond that, 1 overall top 20 GC finish is required to claim a 'Bronze' Award, 2 top 20 GC finishes secures a 'Silver' Award and the pinnacle 3 top 20 PT GC finishes wins the coveted 'Gold' Geminiani-Nencini Award.

Last season's impressive recipients Sigurd Nesset (Bronze Geminiani-Nencini Medal) and Gianluca Brambilla (Silver Geminiani-Nencini Medal) are the first to join what is sure to become an illustrious honour roll.

The second major award category is the Marino Lejerreta Award for achieving 2 top 10 GC results in PT GT races in a single season. Who will be the first to add their name to this prestiguous award category?

The final award category is the Adam Hansen Award for continuous consecutive GT finishes. Last seasons recipient Petr Ignatenko has established an astonishing benchmark of 11 contiuous consecutive finishes. If our record books are correct, this all-time Man-Game record is not under threat in the 2018 season. However with Petr having sat out last seasons Tour de France, we are guaranteed to have a new Award recipient this season (assuming an appropriate nomination is received!), who will then be on course to potentially challenge Petr's record in the future. Any nominations in this categoy should include in the nomination a list of previous continuous consecutive GT finishes that they intend to build upon if such a record exists. (The veracity of any nominees previous GT finishing history claimed will be closely examined!).

GT appearance announcement requests and formatting

Our final order of business is to request (PT GT's only for now remember!) that for those who are interested, they can present information to the community relating to their respective leaders GT plans, or even reveal entire team compositions if they so wish!

In order to identify potential GC contenders, sprint contenders and 'other' contenders (that will be referred to as 'mavericks' ), we welcome if you would please highlight where any rider listed has a main stat of 79 or more (Only Mountain (GC contender), Sprint (sprint contender) and Flat/TT/Hill (maverick contender) are considered necessary to list/define). A preferred format follows:

Last nameFirst nameTeamRoleKey StatStat #
ExampleErikAny.MouseHelperFlat79

Only 1 key stat listing is necessary. We are well aware that some riders may theoretically fall into more than one category, however they will only be listed in one category (hierarchy is GC contender > Sprint contender > Maverick contender).

I you've read this far well done! Brief summaries fo the 4 Man-Game GT's will now follow separately

The 2018 Giro route launch revealed a tricky route, with quite a heavy reliance on use of the TT-bike, including a monster all but 60km long TTT alongside the to be expected mountain (and occasional!) hill fest. This makes life especially difficult for managers to decide upon ideal team composition. In 2017 race clashes, the route design and managerial second-guessing led to what was widely perceived to be the ‘weakest’ PT GT GC (!) field. This season that in itself might lead to more celebrated attendees signing-up, hoping for a similar situation to re-occur!

As is likely the case for all 3 PT GT’s, variations in riders contracted maximum race-day allocations in general increased for stage-race specialist types which may well lead to increased field depth.

To recap on 2017:

2017 GC Top 10
1Jose AlarconHugo Boss85h24'56
2Peter VelitsMoser - Sygic+ 6'32
3Lachlan MortonJayco - Cobra9+ 8'05
4Sergio Luis Henao MontoyaFerrero - Samruk+ 9'39

8Francesco BongiornoTeam Puma - SAP+ 17'51
9Vincenzo NibaliPendleton's+ 19'26
10Rafael ReisPorto - Prio+ 19'41

In a 2017 trend, GC winner Alarcon also claimed the Points competition, and in fact went a step further by additionally claiming the Mountains competition. With the addition of Meiji and Philips – Continental as this year’s PCT wildcard attendees, it is likely that last seasons 4th place finisher Henao Montoya may well return. On the other hand, Velits (2nd) and Monsalve (6th) are now exclusively plying their trade in the PCT division.

The 2018 Veulta route launch trumpeted a clarion call to the top sprinters of the MG universe with the opening 10-days providing the opportunity to finally claim back a final overall Points competition jersey from the GC elite. The majority of the GC battle looks like it will be slowly stored up, raising the pressure until the powder-keg finally bursts in the final week where the key GC stages look to be compressed together. The proceeding Veulta presented a close overall GC battle, with the top 3 all in contention right until the end.

Let’s take a closer look at that 2017 Veulta picture:

8David AbalSpotify - Haglöfs+ 18'22
9Yonathan MonsalveAyubowan!+ 21'35
10Peter VelitsMoser - Sygic+ 21'44

As was the case in all 4 GT’s (!), the overall victor also claimed the Points competition. Mike Aaron Egger claimed the Mountains competition for Wiesenhof -Andritz, and has parlayed that into a potentially long-term contract with new team Evonik – ELKO. PCT wildcards have been confirmed for the Minions and Azteca – ESPN. It is already well understood that Plu-bear (3rd), Monsalve (9th) and Velits (10th) will not return for this year’s event, focussing on their new PCT commitments after PT relegation/transfers.

The ‘big fish’ of the GT’s revealed a route perhaps most suited to the true all-round GC contenders, with a predominance of potentially dangerous hilly stages in week 1, a long ITT (55km) in week 2 after a relatively short TTT to end week 1 (25km), and the usual mythical mountain climbs through the Alps and Pyrenees whose mere names capture the public imagination. The innovative short and potentially decisive stage 20 mountain battle has led to outcry from the gravity-challenged members of the peloton, and there remains continued intense discussion between the MGUCI and riders union regarding a potential time-cut extension, or even ‘amnesty’ to be applied to that particular stage.

The 2017 race presented a titanic battle between Spilak, Phinney and Gesink for the title, with Taaramäe fighting hard but running out of road to make up lost time from an earlier crash that devastated his title tilt.

9Nico KeinathVesuvio - Accumalux+ 29'37

As is the now established pattern, overall winner Spilak also secured the Points competition, and in one of the bigger surprises of the season, Tsgabu Gebremaryam Grmay presented his Haute Route – Mavic team with a brief highlight in an otherwise pretty bleak season by securing both a stage victory and the overall Mountains competition as the team made it’s PT GT debut as a wildcard entrant. In 2018, Kraftwerk Man Machine and Fablok – Bank BGZ will represent the PCT wildcard challenge. Already confirmed as missing from the 2018 start-list is 2017 top 10 contender Adam Yates, now plying his trade in the PCT division.

While it is normal for the 3 PT GT’s to vary their route, and even character year-to-year, the PCT’s flagship 21-day stage-race, the Tour of America, has at times been more reticent to embrace change. That sentiment has been thrown out of the window for the 2018 season with an innovative new route, and an upgrade in points awarded to HC status. There is no TTT in this season’s ToA, balanced by an increased reliance on the abilities of the individual against the clock. An increase in the number of mountain stages will perhaps lead to more decisive gaps between the main and 2nd-tier contenders, with the 2017 edition of the ToA being criticised in some media outlets as being ‘too easy’ due to the large main contender groups that arrived at the finish on a number of previously considered ‘queen-stages’. The gaps between 5th-10th place were indeed surprisingly close, but the podium finishers significantly distinguished themselves from the rest.

8Marc Christian GarbyCarlsberg - Danske Bank+ 9'20
9Piter CamperoGarmin - BikeNZ Cycling+ 10'49

Not to be left out of the party by his PT counterparts, overall victor Warren Barguil also secured the Points competition after securing a narrow overall GC victory over Patrick Schelling. The Mountains competition was secured by Alexis Vuillermoz. Barguil will unfortunately not have the opportunity to challenge for a repeat victory, having moved to the PT division in a convoluted multi-party transfer transaction during the off-season. Schelling will also forego the opportunity to have another tilt at the title, instead having the option to attend PT GT’s instead.

Thanks for playing alexkr00, and all good with the formats - even adding extra value with the flags! First update for the participation lists input. Smile

Interesting line-up with an obvious overall contender in Dombro. Good support for the mountains with Aru, Majka and van der Velde. Looks like you figured more important to lose some time but not drop your leader rather than load-up with TT dudes. Van Poppel solo-ing it for the sprints may well be rewarded with some success.

Good luck!

And I also nominate Thomas Dekker to try for 2 top10 in GTs. Yes, he won`t do it anyway, but I read it as you must nominate him, otherwise he won`t get the award even if he makes it.

Úran is obvious, but the others are a mix of no-TT climbers, cobblers and talents due to conflicting flat/hilly/time trial races. I hope for a decent GC classification and three stage wins by Esmaeli.
