East Midlands Cicle Classic Preview
Cobbles are hard. This profile plus cobbles makes thing extremely challenging. The first part of the course is flat, which lulls the riders into a comfort zone. That's before they go up the first incline and face the first cobbled section. Then it's bang! bang! bang! bang! The hills and the cobbles keep on coming and the riders are meant to hang on for a wild ride. Oh! and there's a bike race to win as well!
Bewley has won this race for four years running and is going for a five-peat! That is one unique and extraordinary record to be chasing.
| Name | HIL | STA | COB | ACC | | Bewley | 71 | 78 | 83 | 83 | | Van Avermaet | 76 | 78 | 82 | 78 | | Summerhill | 73 | 76 | 83 | 73 | | Trentin | 74 | 76 | 81 | 76 | | Vanspeybrouck | 71 | 78 | 82 | 69 | | Senechal | 67 | 79 | 82 | 74 | | Baugnies | 72 | 80 | 80 | 73 | | Blythe | 66 | 76 | 82 | 73 | | Vanbilsen | 69 | 80 | 80 | 71 | | Zepuntke | 69 | 79 | 81 | 64 | | David | 75 | 76 | 78 | 73 | | Sulimov | 70 | 77 | 79 | 71 | | Vanmarcke | 66 | 77 | 80 | 72 | | Nolf | 66 | 77 | 80 | 71 |
Bewley is the overwhelming favourite to once again win this race. His record here is remarkable and nearly unheard off, along with some of his other records!
Van Avermaet finished second last year and remains the biggest threat to his adversary in what will be his last PT cobbled classic appearance at his peak.
Summerhill is the best of the rest, but that description does not do justice to his powers over the cobbles. Born in any other generation, this man would rule the cobbles. Can he get one over on the leading duo here?
Behind the top three, we have Trentin, Vanspeybrouck and Senechal, who should be pushing for the podium spots. Trentin's abilities to get over hills could provide him some advantage. The longer distance suits the other two better.
As it does Baugnies, who along with Vanbilsen has the best energy stats among the favourites. The latter is here on a wildcard but we will get a glimpse of whether he can hang with the top dogs.
Blythe and Zepuntke are strong on the stones but need to hang on in the ascents. David is the opposite with a better ascending ability.
The other riders who can challenge in this race are mentioned in the table above.
| Name | HIL | STA | COB | ACC | | Stallaert | 67 | 76 | 79 | 76 | | Kristoff | 68 | 75 | 78 | 79 | | Maes | 67 | 79 | 79 | 67 | | Ferreira | 68 | 74 | 79 | 69 | | Ringheim | 67 | 75 | 78 | 75 | | Fenn | 61 | 75 | 79 | 69 | | Lampaert | 66 | 74 | 78 | 61 | | Jacobs | 64 | 76 | 78 | 63 | | Taubel | 65 | 69 | 78 | 64 |
The riders mentioned in the above table will want to get into the top 10 as a good result in this race. Anything higher will be quite a bonus. A couple of fast finishers in Kristoff and Stallaert in this group.

No idea what this race does, that's what you get for outsourcing your wildcard applications
Some cobblers here, some guys for XP and I have no clue why Pelucchi is here. Maybe I should outsource my planning as well.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Ah, cobbles are back!
And with it, it's another race where I've got great expectations. A podium for Trentin is always ambitious, but it has to be the goal nonetheless, but it's all about depth for us here. We had a couple of good races this spring in that regard, and hopefully we can build on that and put at least two of Kristoff, Kogstad Ringheim and Breen "up there" in the fight for top 10 placings as well.
This also marks another important part of the season for us, with ToNE soon to come as well. We really need to score great in both races to get inside and hopefully also secure a top 10 overall placing in the teams ranking.
Looking a lot forward to the report! |

Hmm, in the outsider table seems a bit worrying but I still hope for a top 10 by Stallaert. He have some mixed result so far this season, with f.ex 8th in Vlaanderen but then only 22nd in Roubaix.
Would as well like to see Broers atleast in top 50. |

End of a short month with only two classics for us but we're riding with a little less pressure than expected here after Moscow was too good to describe it with words.
Dont have to lose much words about the expectations because i have already written the same exact things in all previous cobbled races. Go Greg!

We had quite an atrocious cobbles spring, with 4th in Italy unable to compensate for 10th and 12th in the monuments, which leaves Blythe 360 points below his 2016 total with only this, Rheden and an long shot in ToNE left. We need to get shit done in these races.
I absolutely disagree that the hill stat will be any form of excuse for not performing here, this is as flat as cobbles get outside of PR. Top 5 must be the goal.

Glad we got the WT wildcard here. Nolf has not done anything all year, and there are no points up for grabs. So my goal is simply to be mentioned in a positive context. Let's see.

We always have a horrible time here, so I suspect this will be another letdown from David and Jacobs.

Wow, didn't see that coming. Bewley be too confident? Congrats to knockout on doing the impossible.
Great to see Trentin sprinting to third place as well. Was a bit worried when he crashed, but he recovered very well. Best (?) result for Nolf this season also, I guess bbl must be a little bit annoyed that he decided to bring his a-game when it didn't really matter.

Finally a different cobbled-winner... Obviously it sucks for our friends at Moser, but it had to work out for another rider at some point. So nice to see van Avermaet and Evonik making it 2 for 2.
Tom David 19th is obviously crap, but a little bit less crap than I had imagined, while Pieter Jacobs in 50th is just horrible. Taramarcaz 51st could have jumped up a spot also to give us a little bit extra...
But oh well. Less of a loss to Moser here than I expected. I was expecting 200-300 points lost. I believe we end up losing 159 points. And as it looks as though Moser will score 90-140 points from Portugal we are leading by ~200 points still. 3 more races for Moser compared to us, though...

What a sweet victory. Just after i stopped counting second places behind Bewley
Now i can look again towards the top 5 ranking positions which would be a huge success after giving up so much for MAL.
Also i request that Abhishek does all the PT classics. Forst Moscow then this.

Wow, GVA finding the perfect timing to attack superman Bewley and stay away to the very end! Big congratulations, knockout!
Trentin with a podium is also great stuff, especially considering the crash, which looked very critical. Big relief when he joined the pack again together with Stallaert, eventhough it surely must have cost quite some energy, crashing that late in the race.
A pity Kristoff didn't make the split when the chase group was divided in two groups, as his sprint surely could have given us another top 10 finisher. It also meant we weren't greatly rewarded for the depth, with 16th place and four more riders in the top 35, as I hoped for a slightly better result from our next best rider.
Thank you for the report, AbhishekLFC, quite a lot of pictures! |

Wow our team really seemed to struggled throw the race with flats and needed to help Stallaert back to the pack and then ending at 8th it a very good result for us.
Espacially when seeing there was two wildcard in front of us which means top 6 in "PT-team category." Broers in at 44th atleast.
Sorry, Roman but it is nice to see someone else then Bewley winning and 2nd is good anyway
Congrats K.O, and ember for podium!
Thanks for reporting! |
