Interesting situation regarding "cracking"

I had an interesting situation the other day and wasn't sure what the best way to play it was.

I was playing a continental race with a secondary group of riders from Team High Road. A VERY secondary group... Tony Martin was my team leader.

He was in second place behind Barbosa and had followed him in a break up a hill toward the end of the race. I was hanging on Barbosa's wheel and with 15 km it was all flats and downhill toward the finish and Martin and Barbosa had a minute and a half on the pack.

Now the issue was my third red bar was about to fill up, and Barbosa was setting a pace that would surely cause Martin to crack. I had two options... ease up and try to finish without cracking and with 3 red bars... or hold on as long as possible, crack, go back to two red bars and finish.

I chose the former, lost 40 seconds on Barbosa and finished 30 seconds ahead of the pack... but I'm wondering what the better option would be? Would I have lost less time by hanging on (gaining some time) then going really slowly after cracking (losing some time) then by being able to go a bit faster again with two red bars (gaining some time).

Any thoughts?

I think its better to avoid gaining a 4th red bar, as if you do crack then theres a chance that you might crack again.
