Create new file .dem

How can I create new file dem?

I downloaded the file hgt from this site
So I downloaded the GRASS GIS program (free)

I can open and view .hgt files, and can convert them into .dem, but the STAGE EDITOR does not recognize them.

In fact, if I try to open the files .dem in the stage editor's folder the program tells me that it's not a file .dem (unable to determine number of raster bands)

can someone help me?

I don't think anyone outside of Cyanide knows what the files need to be like to be recognizable by stage editor. You could ask eyolfur, but I don't know if he will want to explain it.

One of the developers. He's been somewhat active on Steam forum after the release of PCM 2016.
