Fitness - training and racedays in Career

Hey all

I'm fiddling with training and fitness for a new season right now and it struck me, i've no idea if the old "max 60 racedays" mantra still holds true?

Now, when riders don't get to race A LOT - they become annoyed very quickly. Last season, i had to race Pinot like 90 days for him to stop moaning about it. How do you guys plan it out for your demanding riders?

Let's take Pinot as an example(i'm playing FDJ) I want Pinot to ride 2 GT's + warmup races. Last season he won the Giro and the Tour(finished top 5 in the tour 3 years running, big relief to finally win) So this year i want him to race for the Tour and the Vuelta. But the only way i can manage the fitness and training without him becoming ridiculously tired is for him to do absolutely NOTHING for the first half of the season, resulting in him being really unhappy when i have to renegotiate his contract.

How do you guys manage these things? How many days do you plan on racing, do you spread it out over the season - how do you plan your peaks with ongoing races etc.?
