I'm sure the answer should be obvious but I can't find it anywhere...
When the groups are laid out mid race and time gaps shown, I know the blue rider indicates team mates in a group but what do the orange riders mean?
I'm fully prepared to feel stupid

It does mean favorites but it's a little weird, like say in the Giro it counts for any stage in the entire race, so Cavendish would still be orange on a mountain stage. I don't know if there will be a fix or update.
24/ 02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don' t drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

If I am not mistaken, they represent the favourite riders of the stage

It also represents those riders who are overall GC favorites. Although in one race they considered a rider a GC favorite despite the fact that he was well over 30 mins down so I agree a fix is in order

it indicates designated team leaders. Thats why is cavendish orange even in mountains, because he is still leader of etixx for that race

it's potential threats to you
cavendish is pacer in a mountain stage, that's why he is orange, so he can pace them back to you. but most of times they are orange if they are the climbers in a mountainstage because they form a threat to your stage win
