Another short stage (117km), but we're going for the mountains again: a flat first half is followed by a challenging second, featuring a short climb close to a flat finish.
Will GC-leader RodrÃguez keep yellow today? Tomorrow's queen stage will be tougher, but especially Siam's Rodrigues looked strong two days ago. Will he be aggressive again?
The first breakaway group is quickly built and allowed to go for a comfortable gap soon:
Gallego
Hughes
Piamonte
Rosskopf
Yermane
Chamorro
Rosskopf (wearing the U25-shirt as 2nd in this rankings) as best-placed in the GC (38th, + 4.23) and Hughes (5pts) as the only one with KoM-points prior to the stage. Will he at least try to make up some ground on Wu (30pts)?
Let's keep this one short: he won't, as none of today's KoM/intermediate sprints is contested by those six in the escaping group.
The peloton starts controlling the race with 53km remaining: 3'42" disadvantage, while teams like Live Nation, Euskaltel and Azteca share the work in the chase.
About 41km to go for the peloton, which narrowed the gap to 2'50" as we now enter today's longest ascend:
Beltran (GC + 4.23)
Alizadeh (GC + 2.39)
attacked the bunch to establish a minutes-gap quickly!
Nutresa obviously in attacking mode, yet again:
Ochoa Quintero (GC + 2.39)
tries to jump behind and so does
Parra Bustamante (GC + 2.39)
So at least one top-favorite putting pressure on his biggest rivals!
Those latest attackers opened up a 1'30"-gap on the bunch quickly, yet trying to bridge across the early break.
Of course those moves do cause some more action in the pack now (28km remaining):
Godoy
Sorensen
RodrÃguez
went first, followed by
Iglinski
Duenas
Rodrigues
So the GC's Top-4 all on the move now... the pressure is now on guys like Arroyo..
..who's team ONCE looks in control though: 21km before finish, group RodrÃguez/Rodrigues/Iglinski is pulled back by the bunch (45 riders remaining) and ONCE going strong with several domestiques working for Arroyo/Castano.
The early break still leading by 1'30" with group Ochoa Quintero/Beltran/Alizadeh not yet catching up!
The race kinda settles down for a few moments, as we now have a rather easy profile until the short climb before the finish.
Ochoa Quintero is the only one of the mid-stage attackers managing to bridge across the early break!
Other riders like Parra Bustamante are already a minute in arrears, also Beltran couldn't hang on. The peloton (47 riders) is down by 1'49" with now just 12km to go..
Duenas, Rodrigues and RodrÃguez launched another empty-handed move, but with now just 7km remaining, the bunch is still at 47 riders with Azteca looking in control.
Also Parra Bustamante is soon to be caught, while the stage is likely to go to the breakaway group..
Yermane and Hughes went for a short-lived attack prior to this short climb, but are pulled back by their breakaway companions with just 1.8km remaining.
Ochoa Quintero (+ 2.39 in GC) will fancy his chances to make a jump inside the GC today, as the bunch is still 1'34" in arrears..
..but he doesn't exactly look like he will crush the early break..
1km to go and it's Gallego launching a promising move now! No one looks capable to counter this one..
..while the peloton is 1'12" behind with no more attacks so far..
Yes, this was the winning move: Gallego had the perfect timing to go for a comfortable victory. The decent climber won't be a real threat for the GC, but scores a nice win for TomTom after Moreno gave up on line honours quite stupidly yesterday..
+ 28" Piamonte and Yemane, who complete the podium!
Ochoa Quintero has to settle for a 4th place on the stage, but as said before, is likely to gain valuable time in the GC!
+ 1'28" for the bunch with RodrÃguez sprinting for today's 8th place. Once those first two or three serious attacks faded, the GC-contenders kept it easy in this tricky final. They may focus on tomorrow's queen stage anyway.
But of course we have at least one notable move in the GC today:
Ochoa Quintero moves up to 7th thanks to his efforts here. RodrÃguez, Godoy, Duenas and Rodrigues still with a comfortable gap on GC's 5th Diniz. All other GC-favorites like Arroyo, Iglinski/Schwab or Sorensen are still 2'39" down on yellow. Those guys need to be more aggressive tomorrow.
